The 'most criminally underrated band blah blah blah'
Is one of the most criminally overused comments, on these types of YT vids, of all time!
Depends where you're from I suppose. They were far from underrated in the UK and Europe, and most of the rest of the English speaking world.
So, maybe underrated in the US but the US does not constitute the entire world. Just because a band is not popular in the US does not mean they are not popular, full stop.
Anyway, have a good one mate.

My sister is seven years older than me. She always was listening our local college radio (Ipanema FM, Porto Alegre, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil Rip...😔). So, the 80s was a time when the radio ALWAYS turned on when you were performing everyday activities. That said, I ask you for just to try imagine the SHOCK a dreamy pre teen boy (me) had when he was helping mom at cleaning the garden in a Sunday morning and "Lorelei" began to sound through my sisters window. Yes, that was my Cocteau twins discovery. The second was in THE SAME WEEK: "Persephone". The station radio began to play all Treasure tracks. Treasure was the first official CT album to be released in Brazil. I still the proud owner of my vinyl copy, bought a few weeks after this pivotal happening. Can you believe it? This marked me forever

Well, you asked for it - it's pronounced Cock-toe Twins (honest) and they are truly one of a kind. I knew Robin Guthrie (guitarist) as a kid when he was just getting into music but I never realised he had this much talent/vision. This is, to my mind, their best album but the best release was the Lullabies EP which included 'It's All But an Ark Lark' - sublime (Warning - opinion may not be shared by everybody!)

Take a lateral leap from The Cocteau Twins to another Cocteau: the record label Cocteau was briefly the home of releases by the astronomically talented - and hugely underrated - guitarist Billl Nelson. Have a listen to his album Quit Dreaming And Get On The Beam, and especially the single taken from it, Do You Dream In Colour? Still find it inexplicable that it wasn't a massive hit. Also worthy of your time is Revolt Into Style by Bill Nelson's Red Noise - the word 'stunning' was invented for this track!

Treasure is my favourite Cocteau Twins album: ten jewels on one crown. Elisabeth Fraser sings a cocktail of existing and self made lyrics because of the sound of the words. It's all about the way the words sound while she sings them. The colour, vibration and resonance of the words are more important than their actual meaning. They contribute to the atmosphere of the song.

It might have been as late as Four-Calendar Cafe that lyrics really featured prominently and were intelligible. BUT, that was never the point when listening to this group. Loved your reactions.
    Firstly the name is pronounced
    Cock toe Twins.
The album Treasure was Simon Raymonde's first album with the band. Though he joined them in between Head Over Heels ( their second album) & Victorialand.
Simon Raymonde is the son of Ivor Raymonde a world reknowned arranger, writer , producer & orchestrator who had worked with Scott Walker, Dusty Springfield & David Bowie, to name just a few.
Simon's contributions often get overlooked. He is a gifted multi instrumentalist in his own right.
These days he owns & runs Bella Union records & it the co founder of the label. And also his current band Lost Horizons.
Robin Guthrie is a master of ambient guitar having released numerous solo records & collaborations with the late great multi instrumentalist Harold Budd.
Cocteau Twins first worked with Harold on The Moon & The Melodies album.
Treasure is a firm fan favourite. Whilst Cocteaus are my alltime favourite band. Head Over Heels is my favourite album by them. But they are all brilliant.
Please react to Musette & Drums from Head Over Heels.
P.s. I totally got what you meant about the Chelsea Wolfe connection.
THANK U for not talking whilst the songs were playing .

If this album only had half the production quality they had at Blue Bell Knoll or Heaven or Las Vegas ... it still remains my favorite, along with the EPS from that time (The Spangle Maker, Lorelei, Aikea-Guinea)

So glad you're reacting to Cocteau Twins Justin! A major band with the most fascinating female vocalist in pop (and I admire people like Kate Bush or Björk). Don't bother to decipher their lyrics as not understanding what she's saying is part of the magic. Internet temptations to interpret them were dismissed by Elizabeth Fraser herself who said they were often more interesting than what she actually wrote. From "Heaven or Las Vegas", you can actually begin to understand bits of what she's singing. "Treasure" is often cited as their best album by the fans which, for me, is a mistake as Robin Guthrie himself said it was one of their weakest but it's probably the best introduction to their work. "Victorialand" is pure beauty, "Heaven or Las Vegas"(my favourite!), "Blue Bell Knoll" or "Four Calendar Cafe" much more interesting but some of their EPs ("Echoes in a shallow bay", "Love's Easy Tears" or "Twinlights" which is wonderfull!) are just as good. Actually, except "Garlands", their debut-album with different line-up (Simon Raymonde wasn' part of the group yet), all they did was great and special. Nothing else sounds like what they produced allthough many tried. Probably one of the most underestimated groups ever. Please Justin, keep on reacting to their work, you won't be disapointed I'm sure, but probably surprised as they were not just atmospheric or ethereal. You should also react to This Mortal Coil's album "It'll end in tears" (a collective work with Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance and other groups) which is perfect in october/november period. I'm sure you'll love it!

Especially given the fact that you have done videos on them before. With the amount of content, articles, interviews, and documentaries about the band over the last 20 plus years, a simple 5 second search could confirm how to pronounce their name. It turns out actually that most of, if not all of the band's lyrics circulating the internet, are laughably incorrect. They amount to the fandom's hilariously futile attempts at deciphering Elizabeth Fraser's mostly unintelligible lyrics, which she has always chosen to keep secret, because according to her, they are just too personal.
I mean, a few of those "lyrics" do seem nonsensical enough to arouse suspicion, but then there are those where it's so blatantly obvious they're incorrect, that it actually may cause hurt and anger attempting to make sense of them in your head - the most egregious appearing mostly in those of songs spanning their album output of the 1980s.

I had a theory that a great singer could sound great singing a restaurant menu and Liz Fraser proves my theory on this track.

Oh dear, it's Cock-toe :) An interesting introduction to a band i've known of, but not listened to. Had them down as indie shoe starer types, a la Jesus Mary chain, not sure why. And there is a fair bit of jangly guitar, but with great bass, and far richer sound than I expected. Partic Ivo, loved this, and though i enjoyed Lorelei it didn't have the same impact. Overall, a great sound, the music swirling around the airy, ethereal vocals, very atmospheric. I look forward to hearing more.

Also, might add, Head Over Heels is magnificent as well, the album prior to this. Five,Ten,Fiftyfold, Sugar Hiccup and Musette and Drums the pick for me. Cocteau Twins always started and ended their albums with a stormer. Blue Bell Knoll, the first song on the Blue Bell Knoll album for some reason makes me well up at the end and I have no idea why.
    More please.

Many Cocteau Twins fans cite Treasure among their best albums but it's not what I think nor the opinion of the band, which finds it unfinished.
I find the majority of the compositions a bit repetitive and not really successful and the big problem for me is the horribly reverberated drum machine.
My favorite tracks on the album are "Beatrix" and the more atmospheric "Otterley" which foreshadows the next album, the awesome and ethereal Victorialand (which does not contain any rhythmic track ... which is a plus from my point of view!).

    • @eboethrasher
      @eboethrasher 2 роки тому

The drum samples on this album are also a John Bonham kit that was popular at the time, you can even hear it at times.

Also, the sort of sound of a lot of 80s stuff involves drum machine, so I've always been down with it. But Treasure is indeed also not my fave album, and Robin not only got better sounding drum machines (as the world did) but he got a lot better at programming them.

These were the first two Cocteau Twins songs I heard way back in 1984. I purchased a compilation album from 4AD Records that had groups like This Mortal Coil and Gene Loves Jezebel on it. Both these songs were mesmerizing - I never heard anything like this before, so different than the mainstream music of the time. Like the Chameleons. the Cocteau Twins helped form my musical taste that continues to this day.

Great band - this may be the first reaction to any of their songs, so thanks for doing a review. Elizabeth Fraser's 'lyrics' are often a kind of experimental language - a futuristic scat singing.

My favourite female singer of all time. But what i wouldn't give to replace that drum machine with real drums. I think it lets Treasure down a bit.
For me, Treasure is the album where CT found their sound but I think what came after is better. It is a fan favourite though.
I really hope you do more and I recommend Blue Bell Knoll, Victorialand, Four Calendar Cafe and Milk & Kisses which I think are on par with Heaven or L.V.

I don't believe the Cocteau's have ever published lyrics for a lot of their songs. Lyrics found online are usually submitted by listeners who think they've deciphered Liz Fraser's singing.
I do know one song with some lyrics I definitely recognise as a nursery rhyme (the chorus of the last track, Donimo, off Treasure), so I suspect Liz gathers material from everywhere and then selects and distorts the words to suit her singing or the song.

The 80s drum machine used on this album is the E-Mu Drumulator with the "Rock Chip" installed.
You can hear it used by plenty of other artists too (good example is Tears For Fears, "Shout").
The Rock Chip drum samples were taken from Led Zeppelin's "When The Levee Breaks".
