Thank you for bringing Filipino food and culture to New Zealand. I can see you put a few twist to the menu and food. But the Filipino food is never basic . Its complex and savory.
Hi Rose, thanks for watching! I think they were referring to the presentation as simple rather than the flavours. It’s so awesome to have such passionate people representing Filipino food culture in NZ. We love their food so much. Have a brilliant day! Cheers, Sheena
I agree with you. I know they want to put Filipino food in a new level (in NZ), but the manner in which she said 'basic' didn't sound right to me. The lady should think of a more creative way to express what she meant, because as a Filipino who grew up with a mother who cooked delicious and appealing dishes, it didn't sound right. I also grew up going to local restaurants and five-star hotels and the food presentation made by Filipino chefs is excellent. Even if you are generalizing how a typical Filipino dish is presented like in small food stalls in the streets (carinderia), there are more creative ways to describe our cuisine, right? Food presentation around the world is, after all, basic in its purest sense, nothing less. Food in plate, savor, eat. Take for example the Swiss fondue. It's as basic as it could get: old bread and melted cheese. But it evolved, and many renditions were made from this simple dish made from the Alps. The food presentation of the restaurant is nice, but they're not the first to make Filipino food look "presentable". For decades, many Filipino chefs and cooks have been stepping up their game when it comes to gastronomical and fusion Filipino cuisine. It's all over the internet. Nothing new.
Rose-Well said! The woman owner can speak gloriously of their fare, but it is offensive to describe Filipino food in the Philippines as being “basic” or not really presentable compared to theirs! Where did she eat in the Philippines that she would describe it as such?! Presentation is one of the hallmarks of our cuisine; we take pride and care in serving food that is not only very tasty, but also visually appealing. That owner’s comment reeks of racism and cultural misappropriation, especially considering that Caucasians/White Europeans have a long and continuing history of practicing superiority over other cultures! Theirs is not the only business to have presented our cuisine in varied forms, but it is nowhere close to what we HUMBLY and EXCELLENTLY make in our beloved homeland!

For sure David! It’s a winner 🤤 Thanks for watching- hope you enjoy what we have coming up on the channel. Keen to get down your ways for a bit of filming soon! Cheers, Sheena
In the Philippines we have different versions of Adobo... the one with black sauce only has vinegar and soy sauce, while there are also versions of Adobo with coconut milk which is referred to as (Ginataang Adobo), we also have a version without soy sauce, it is referred to as (Adobong Puti) which translates to 'White Adobo'.
It's so true what Laura said, in the Philippines it doesn't matter how the food is presented we never care about that we get the food from the kaldero straight to a serving bowl or to our plate. What matters most is how it tastes. So glad there are Pinoy restaurants/food trucks within my reach (Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne).
Totally agree with this sentiment and with the concept of ugly delicious! Being Chinese- it’s true of many of our dishes too! Thanks for watching Carolyn, how you enjoyed this video! Cheers, Sheena

So happy to see Filipino food is becoming so much more visible around the world. I was born there but grew up in Australia and England and now live in France but found some pigs’ ears in a French market and last night cooked them in a recipe from my mother’s ancestral village in the Philippines. I do French and English food for my kids but sometimes the tastebuds still look for their roots - and see my reply to Teresa below.
Sorry I missed your reply Josephine! Love that you were able to cook your Mum's dish for the family! We've noticed so many more Filipino restaurants here in Auckland- it's awesome to see. Hope you're having a fabulous week! Cheers, Sheena
Are there many Filipino restaurants in the Netherlands Dames Eva? We’re so lucky getting a taste of the Philippines here in Nz! Thanks for watching and commenting mate. Cheers, Sheena
Filipino Food trucks are very popular here in the States from California (San Francisco to Los Angeles) to the Mid West of Chicago, Utah, Colorado & all the way to New York City & down to Miami Florida.
There's actually a lot of versions of adobo and it varies from places to places here in the Philippines. There's a version of adobo that uses coconut milk as it's base. It's understandable that people thinks that adobo only has soy sauce and vinegar as its base because that's the classic adobo that were introduced in other countries. If you try to dig deeper, there's more than just the classic adobo and you will be amazed of how many delicious variations it has🤤😋.
I'll say it again the food scene in your country just looks amazing. Really jealous to the extreme y'all. I reckon I get there soon so hungry so very hungry and jealous 😭😭😭😭😭 I almost have to go 100 miles from my home for great food. Oh Man I'm truly jealous. Great vlog thanks for sharing.
When you head out on a food trek mate do you ever bring home takeaways so you can freeze them? I’d totally do that 😆 thanks for watching this one- the food scene has just blossomed in our city over the past 15 years- it’s super exciting to get to share it. Have a great day! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate A few of them offer frozen to take home, but yup I extra to take home. I've got enough curry to last till May. Love the series I am always jealous of the available real food restaurants that you two have access sorry SUPER JEALOUS 😋😋😋😋😋
This couple brilliant ideas what they do to Filipino cuisine more love and care and look more appialing to the other culture rather than Filipino people. We aware that when we cooking our own food we don't pay attention 😋 i know taste good but the colour and presentation not very high standard. Keep it up. Its nice to see this video some new generation who born and grew up in different countries have passion our Filipino cuisine I'm very empress and present beautifully 😍 ❤.
It’s so awesome that they are sharing their love of Filipino cuisine with NZers! The food is absolutely delicious and their shop is such a vital addition to the Auckland food scene. Thanks for watching Jean! Cheers, Sheena
Great food. But i think the chef should go back to the Philippines (or at least go to the right places) to try the food here. We have a myriad of restos in the city, a lot of fusions. It's easy to imagine pata in a pao, bec asado in asado siopao/bao is also sweet. But their take on Pinoy food looks cool! Looks really different. Would love to try it. Doesn't always have to be traditional. But that can always be explained in their tagline hehe
It’s so awesome seeing people innovate and add their own personality to food isn’t it? Thanks for watching mate, hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Sheena
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed the video- we’re so lucky to have such a passionate couple sharing Filipino cuisine with Aucklanders! Cheers, Sheena
The adobo del diablo i believe is the Southern Luzon "chicken adobo sa gata" or in english is chicken abobo in coconut milk thats with turmeric hot spice is optinal you can add it any time. Adobo in the Philippines is not always vinegar and soy sauce, while vinegar is basic and can't be done without saltiness can source everywhere and in many flavors. Salt can be from plain salt, or from fish sauce, or fermented shirmp paste(bagoong) or unfermented shirmp paste(salted alamang).
The couple who spent their life savings on a Filipino food truck. Good video. I support your video. Watched the video on March 10, 2022 rat like. Thank you so much
😍 hope you’re able to get here soon Nicola! The food scene here is my favourite bit about the city. Thanks for watching and commenting mate. Cheers, Sheena
the basic look of the Filipino dishes actually depends on where you are eating. if it's a home cooked meal or just fron a carinderia or a small restaurant, then you might get something like that, but if you are at a nice restaurant, presentation will definitely be evident because to people who can afford, presentation is just as important as the taste, unlike in an average customer.

Thanks for watching Kevinne! Hope you enjoyed this video mate. We’re so lucky to have such incredible people promoting Pinoy food here in NZ. Cheers, Sheena
There are all types of Adobos so it's not always "black". There are even Adobos with no soy sauce. The coconut version definitely exist in the Philippines specifically in the Bicol region. Look it up.

We are blessed with a nice climate, we can grow greens 365 days a year .. Making a meal is almost your imagination is the only limitation. Some of our meals doesnt even nake sense but it works, example is tuyo and champorado for breakfast, dried salted fish eaten with chocolate rice porridge

They should name their restaurant something unique and catchy that foreigners would understand that its Filipino restaurant with English and tagalog translation. Tagalog is not international language. Or just Philippines cuisine... Philippines diner etc ..

@@dramaqueen2964 your name speak for yourself, she did not say anything negative about Filipino food it’s upon my observation that most of the food we have is colored brown and it was given a lift when the resto had incorporated some color and different cooking/ preparation techniques…Chill Madam✌️

And obviously you do not know how to cook as well, because how else can you improve on dinuguan and adobong squid (for example) which are black! And what do you know about my name?! I love documentaries and dramatic films, you have a problem with that?!
@@dramaqueen2964 well it’s not a must that I understand English as I am Filipino, but it might be you who is nit picking, I did not focus on what the white owner who is by the way married to a little brown Filipino had said but rather on the whole presentation of the program, I don’t feel inferior to the west as I know Filipino food is delicious however sometimes the presentation is not that appealing..remember it’s not only our taste buds who eats but also our eyes 😜 or baka sa Rockwell ka lang kasi kumakain kami sa turo turo lang😛 and who cares if I’m not a chef never claimed to be one, what’s important is for me to appreciate good affordable food.. don’t fell bitter about the white lady because she is making money from the Filipino food after all🤓
You can always create a new name for your dishes if it isnt prepared, cooked, and taste the authentic traditional way. You can just add "inspired" to describe it like for example "... dish inspired from filipino adobo" or "... filipino tahu inspired drink".. Fusion is ok in regards to creativity aapect but sometimes non filipinos get the wrong idea of what an authentic taste is if he is first exposed to it.
Why do so many Filipino restaurant owners keep confusing "AUSTRONESIAN" with "MALAY"? Malaysians has never colonized or greatly influenced the Philippines. If there are similarities between Malaysian cuisine & Filipino cuisine, that's because of the AUSTRONESIAN ROOTS. The Austronesians in the Philippines are older than the Austronesians in Malaysia and Indonesia and Oceania because the Philippines was the first stop of the Austronesian people who mass migrated from Taiwan. The Austronesian people who mass migrated stayed in the Philippines for hundreds of years before their children's children started moving to Malaysia and Indonesia and other areas. Do you know what I mean? I'm not trying to fight here. I just want to share valid information because this topic needs to be addressed.
You are quite right Teresa. If you have done any of the modern DNA tests like 23&me and you have Filipino roots, you’ll see that a lot of your ancestors came through southern China, through the Taiwan strait then some went all the way south through Papua New Guinea and onto Australia/New Zealand. The Malay migration was secondary but that’s not what’s commonly taught in the Philippines. And any Filipinos who now reside in Oz/NZ can probably claim, yes we belong here, the peoples here also share our genetic haplogroups! Getting away from the subject! Congratulations to Hapunan! Great you bet all on your dream and are making a grand success of it. The $300 taho should be headlines in the Philippines. Has no one heard yet?
Filipino food is modern. It is presentable. You're making it sound like Filipino food is not good enough on its own. To all Filipinos out there, never let a white woman tell you your culture is not good enough.
No one said Filipino food is not good enough on its own nor did Laura say or imply that Filipino culture is not good enough. They would hardly be busting their guts promoting Filipino food culture here in NZ if this was the case. There’s always room for innovation in food no matter what the cuisine- the fact they’re both dedicating every day to cook and promote Filipino food is a love letter to the Filipino food culture. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Sheena

Sorry they are exaggerating a bit about the adobo. There are white, yellow adobo. It is not even called adobo before and we do not have soy sauce. It was brought by the chinese traders. In my opinion the 300 dollar taho is a myth or a joke by the one who wants to buy it. Do not get me wrong i love taho but i will not pay 300 for it as it will be available the next day and day after. I wish them the success in making pinoy food known in NZ and beyond.

Thanks for the info mate! Isn’t it neat that there are passionate people repping Filipino cuisine in NZ. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Sheena
I am so proud to be a Pilipino that the Filipino food is started to notice now in the mainstream well done hapunan in ouckland New Zealand
Don't start Pinoy proud again it's getting old you all talk no a actions to be proud of
It's so true what Laura said, in the Philippines it doesn't matter how the food is presented we never care about that we get the food from the kaldero straight to a serving bowl or to our plate.

Love that there are so many variations on the one dish! Something for everyone! Thanks for watching mate. Hope you enjoyed the video.

Filipino cuisine do evolve and Adobo in turmeric and coconut milk is an old recipe here in the Philippines. One of the many versions of Adobo.
Salt can be from plain salt, or from fish sauce, or fermented shirmp paste(bagoong) or unfermented shirmp paste(salted alamang).

the basic look of the Filipino dishes actually depends on where you are eating. if it's a home cooked meal or just fron a carinderia or a small restaurant, then you might get something like that, but if you are at a nice restaurant, presentation will definitely be evident because to people who can afford, presentation is just as important as the taste, unlike in an average customer.
Thanks for watching Zee! Hope you enjoyed this one. Cheers, Sheena

I know they want to put Filipino food in a new level (in NZ), but the way the lady said 'basic' didn't sound right to me. She should think of a more creative way to express what she meant, because as a Filipino who grew up with a mother who cooked delicious and appealing dishes, it didn't sound right.
No offence was intended with the use of the word basic- Aldrin and Laura are passionate about sharing Filipino food and culture with New Zealanders and this is their take on the cuisine. It’s great to be able to celebrate two people who are so passionate about sharing Filipino food culture. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Sheena
They should name their restaurant something unique and catchy that foreigners would understand that its Filipino restaurant with English and tagalog translation. Tagalog is not international language. Or just Philippines cuisine... Philippines diner etc ..
I think it’s a great name- it makes people curious about the place and the cuisine. And it’s reflective of their work and who they are. They do such great food. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Sheena

Thanks for watching Mindyu! The food is just delicious- so happy we can get Filipino eats like this in Auckland! Cheers, Sheena
Mindyu-Are you serious?!
@@dramaqueen2964 your name speak for yourself, she did not say anything negative about Filipino food it’s upon my observation that most of the food we have is colored brown and it was given a lift when the resto had incorporated some color and different cooking/ preparation techniques…Chill Madam✌️
@@mindyu2146 It is a shame you do not understand the English language!

Thanks for watching Garth! Cheers, Sheena
Great info! You should include this information at Wikipedia
Great info Teresa! Thanks for watching. Cheers, Sheena
Hapunan is called dinner time.
