Being as this was the first time I've seen one of these mega-trains, I didnt realize that they're as common as they are out West. Apparently Norfolk Southern only started doing mega trains in recent years. Without counting all 3 locomotives, I counted 197 cars on this. Was cool to see something new and uncommon here!
WallieB26 I have lots of plans for malls when all this ends in the Chicago area. I think you would like my content. There is only 1 mall there now but when this ends I have allt more being uploaded after.
The UP has been doing these monster manifest trains like this for a while and now the NS seems to be getting in to them as well. All in the name of cutting costs.
Actually NS has only been doing PSR for not even a year. UP and CSX have been doing this the longest, about two years plus because it was originally the idea of the late Hunter Harrison who originally started it on CN and introduced it to CSX when he took over as CEO in 2018.
I love Norfolk southern. I stop at their yard near me on a regular basis. That was a heck of a train. Suprised it had only two power units. Nice catch though. Hope to see more.
I like watching trains down in Royal Oak, MI where the railroad cuts right through downtown. It's especially cool during the summer festival there where you can be watching a concert, then suddenly a train comes charging right past everybody while the band plays on!
I really enjoyed this video. Way back in the day when I was kid in 1914. I was afraid of trains when I go visit my grandma. But now I don't mind hearing or seeing one at all.
Nice! I used to live about a mile away from the (massive) Enola yard (originally Conrail, now Norfolk Southern).... That footage reminded me of the traffic coming/going from Enola.
I just read that on another video! Apparently Norfolk Southern only started doing these mega trains with mid-train DPUs within the last couple of years. At least around here anyway. First time I saw a train with this many cars. I counted 197 without including the 3 locomotives.
@@jackiehoward7300 someone else just mentioned that channel as well. Apparently they're from Dunkirk, NY which I have visited a few times when enroute to Buffalo when I've hung out with Anthony of Aces Adventures
Used to have the Norfolk Southern come through Concord, NC like that and always got stuck at crossings waiting on it. Didn't appreciate it as a child like I do now days
There is a train that goes through Grove City multiple times a day, CN/Lake Erie-Bessemer (their locomotives are orange). This line goes from Penn Hills to Conneaut, Ohio. I always liked hearing it go through town, even in the middle of the night!
I actually made a road trip today to drive up route 8 to butler, then to Evans City, to Ellwood City and down 65. I’ve watched countless amounts of trains for Norfolk Southern use the Allegheny Valley Expressway, The Pennsylvania Railway that goes through East Liberty and the other rail lines they own Parallel to CSX on the Southside... But I’ve never seen a train that long before from Norfolk Southern, That’s watching them for years being a train fan. Pretty impressive, I mean the length of that train was insane.
What's rather funny is, when the train was stopped, I figured it was going to be awhile so I started to head home. I decided to stop at a small riverfront railroad crossing where there is a bike/hiking trail. There was a poor guy with his bike stuck on the other side of the crossing trying to figure out how the heck to get across or around as it was right near the middle of it. LOL then suddenly I heard the cars all go "BANG" so I knew it was getting ready to move. So at least he wasnt stuck there long. And needless to say I raced to get back to the spot I was at waiting for it to come by originally. Lol
Fantastic! I never knew that a freight train could be that long. When I was a kid back in the 1950s we lived across the street from the railroad tracks. The Lackawanna railroad ran through Lincoln Park New Jersey. I would watch the trains and count the cars. I would wave at the guys in the caboose.
That was definitely a long train for Pa standards. Ive seen them that long out west and down south in my travel's. Definitely dont see them like that on this side of Pa. Thank you for Sharing that Wallie. I have been looking forward to seeing on of your rail videos for a long time now. I some local footage of my own i have to get edited and posted soon.
Helper Locomotives are getting quite common where I am (I live along the CSX up in New York, before 2019, we never got any mid/rear train locomotives, now it’s every other train) Overall though, awesome catch 😊
From another video I watched just now, mega trains with Mid-Train DPUs are common out West. Apparently Norfolk Southern only started doing these in the last couple of years. Was cool to see something uncommon here for the first time.
That mid train locomotive would be known as distributed power units or DPU's and those DPU units are remote controlled and in sync with the lead locomotives and are used in bigger trains with more heavier loads. Had been seeing a bunch of train videos lately, mostly from channels like Wide World Of Trains ( out of Dunkirk NY) and by Jaw Tooth to name a couple.
I've watched plenty of Jaw Tooth's videos. Seems like a good guy. And thank you for the info. I started reading into this after someone brought it to my attention it was a DPU. Pretty neat! Was great to see one for the first time. I figured it was uncommon. Found out NS only just started doing these mega-trains with DPUs within the last few years.
I'll have to check out the other channel you mentioned. I've visited Dunkirk several times when enroute to Buffalo. Would be nice to see someone's videos who doesnt live all too far away.
@@WallieB26 in his videos there is a spot with one crossing where there's something like an 100 foot space of road between the Norfolk Southern tracks and the CSX tracks there. I once used to live in small town Iowa where there was Chicago & Northwestern tracks that one time was a few hundred feet from my old house when I was an kid. That line became an bike trail around the mid 80s. Used to see cabooses and open frame autoracks on the trains going by back in the 70s then.
I read that! The 4078 was a GE rebuild and was originally NS 8779. I saw another video, today, someone posted of 4078 pulling a train with a DPU in the middle of it. Pretty cool!
@@bokclytzii5538 Oh nice! That reminds me, back in 2017, I caught the NS Research Train with "The Brick" and filmed it when it happened to be in Millvale. Was blown away I happened to see it in person.
@@bokclytzii5538 I see you uploaded one video. Ever thought of uploading any more? I have another one from today in the same spot of a coal train that passed on the same tracks about 30 minutes prior. Hence why the 4078 was stopped.
Yeah I have a bunch of videos of the ns meadville line cause I live in the area and it’s been hard to upload videos at the moment don’t have the time too but I have a few videos of these locomotives that the Western New York and Pennsylvania bought from CSX called ac6000cw locomotive from ge
After this pandemic has subsided this country is going to take off and be balls to the wall in every industry. And all the people that have been displaced will be back
This may seem silly but watching this video has giving me vibes from the movie Unstoppable where 777 went rouge and would not just stop and went through many towns until it was stopped by 2 brave heroes and i also heard that it actually happened in Ohio from a CSX 8888 man that's crazy but it's a cool movie and cool video Wallie and yeah i kind like trains too even model train sets!
I'm guessing he's coming out of Conway Yard and might be headed to Enola or somewhere east. But I don't know what direction he was headed, so I really can't make a good guess. Yep, all the major railroads have pretty much adopted what they call precision schedule railroading which is longer trains, less crews, less locomotives, and combing two trains going to the same place. NS actually has only been do PSR for not even a year. They started doing it near the end of 2019 if I recall correctly.
Well I figured, I'm by myself and I'm not touching anything nor anyone and there wasnt anyone near me as per the distance measures, etc. So I dont see the harm in that.

Looks as if it needs extra pulling power , what a monster load . Really cool segment.

Shoutout to Alex for getting me into railfanning. This is an awesome video Wallie. What a neat train. 🙌

Awesome catch. that was a long one for sure. DPU power is pretty common out here in cali.
Thanks for everything you do Wallie. You da best!
Thank you wallie I'm also a railfan myself love that NS mid train dpu and CSX also does it too time to time.
Chicago and NorthWestern hopper car at 2:44 was cool to see. Also the Milwaukee Road hopper was cool too at 3:29.
