LC The thinking mans guitar player without a doubt. I've had the pleasure of meeting him and he's just such a gentleman. Intelligence, and humility makes for better music. Thanks Larry for making the difference in our playing styles.
All you shredders --take note this is what PLAYING GUITAR is all about. LC ( I have the same initials ) I use you as a format to my students all the time. Playing and learning never ends--I listen to you to grab inspiration--my thought --before I even listened to you--if you don't feel it--don't play it--CREATIVITY BECOMES INDIVIDUALITY--you are a promoter of that concept and so much more--THANK YOU from the bottom of my musical heart !
Beatiful touch, clear thinking, beatiful soul, warm heart, no monster ego, poetic passages, Class class class, Dear big brother Larry you have been an inspiration to me sinve I was a teenager, Thank you for all the things you have shared with us, taught us and inspired us to do. On behalf of all the guitars players whos lives youve touch I say "thank you big brother" there will only be one Larry Carlton!
You guys ought to hear Larry Carlton on stage in Paris with Steve Lukather. They were performing with the band in Paris on the song, the Pump, by composer Tony Hymas. I was listening to this and it is like they started off with the song and then began floating off on some incredible tangent into a completely different realm. It's very fortunate somebody in France got a video where you could hear them blast off on this tune. Incredible!
I stumbled across these videos and glad I did. I love the Jazz feel he has without floating off like can jazz tend to do. It feels connected and rooted. Great playing.
+Vrijman IMO"smooth jazz" has a repetitive rhythm with an easily accessible melody , doesn't often use the blues scale and doesn't feature tonal progression as in Room 335 (which is the tune Larry is soloing over). Sure Larry creates a smooth sound, that's because he's a technical virtuoso and he's a master of feel. Larry has played many legendary solos with Steely Dan, the Crusaders and his own albums, many of which are technically challenging to play. I think you'll find he's trying to demonstrate here how you can play something interesting without playing lots of notes and concentrating on phrasing and technique

Larry Carlton, grote inspirator. Tis geweldig!
Larry and I have something in common, we both play 335s Thanks Larry. Wonderful music.
@awesomejohnnet Yeah -- what awesomejohn said. I second every sentiment and syllable. God bless you, Larry.
He's Vanessa Carlton's uncle, I did not know that. That's pretty neat!!! Music is what get's us through life!!! I LOVE MUSIC!!!
Well said bluesatbirth exactly.
It's based on the amazing Room 335 track.
Only fitting he should use a Steely Dan like backing track since he was one of the best to ever play with Steely Dan.
So gooooood listening it..
But isn't this supposed to be more appropriately called a smooth jazz?
