Depends on the song but generally, it takes me anywhere from 20-40 minutes to learn a song. Once I learn it and memorize it, I'll play through it like 3 times or so just to make sure I have it memorized and then I'll jump right into recording it usually if I feel I have it down good enough. If not I'll practice it for a little longer. The process of recording and editing the videos takes longer than the time it takes me to actually learn the song in most cases. The whole process of learning a song and then having the cover uploaded on UA-cam takes somewhere around an hour usually.

Unfortunately, there isn't really any magic shortcut even though I wish there was. It's all about developing your ear and that just takes time. The more you do it, the better you get. Nowadays, you have a lot of tools at your disposal. You have tabs, you have tons of live videos for reference, you have the ability to slow songs down and isolate guitar tracks so you can hear things more clearly, use all these things to your advantage. That's the best advice I can give besides just practicing.

@@patrickdonaire4743 I mic my amp. I use 2 Shure SM57's, those go into a little mixer, mixer goes to my interface and finally the interface to my laptop/DAW.
Just curious...wouldnt UA-cam demonetize cover videos for having another artists music in it? Just wondering cause they've gotten so tyrannical lately with demonetizing everyone
Yeah, you can't monetize covers that have any of the original copyrighted song playing as a backing track, it's illegal and you can actually be sued for doing it. What usually happens with covers is the label will claim the video and then they'll put ads on it and claim any ad revenue that the video generates, you get nothing but they allow the video to stay up usually because they're making money off it. Occasionally, some labels will allow you to share the ad revenue if the UA-cam copyright filter detects your video as a cover. With my videos, this only happens like 50% of the time and when you share revenue, after Google takes their cut and the label takes theirs you're left with literal pennies unless you're getting tens of thousands of views per video, you're not making any money anyway so it's not even worth it. The other 50% of the time, the label claims the video and I make nothing which is fine by me as I don't do this to make money anyway. I know a lot of other UA-cam cover guys and general music oriented UA-camrs complain about copyright all the time and not being able to make money off other peoples copyrighted material but I'm not one of them. I think that's how it should be and it's the artists and labels right to protect their copyrighted property from slimy UA-camr's trying to bum off their property while trying to pretend everything should be considered fair use. But still, there are definitely instances where labels overstep and claim ridiculous things like somebody playing a second of a riff from a song or something but in general, I think the system is pretty fair and actually much better than how it used to be way back in the day when it was way more cutthroat and unforgiving. At least they're not blocking videos now (generally) and throwing out copyright strikes as much as they used to.
