I find these so nostalgic...reminds me so much of my Mum and other 'grown ups' ...just doing baking and cooking...sigh...as back then you had to actually cook...and peel a potato ...We didn't have ready meals..or frozen mash... those were the days xx Delia reminds me of my childhood friends Mum..
A world of knowledge easily available to all. I follow Delia often, but anyone else here giving her even more time while sheltering in place? (I love how she calls herself greedy, else she'd be rather too perfect.)
Excellent dough-handling advice. My only concern is - Margarine and Lard. Lard is great, my Grandma always used it fir Pastry, and I have, too. But Margarine? Not a good thing. I have always used Butter. And I have been baking since the '60s.
I think you're right. Delia in most her recipes now recommend butter, or a mix of lard and butter. This episode is from the early 80's and things have moved on.
(: I prefer butter too ....😚 It tastes better .... ☺ Of course they say now that "Margarine is not good for you" ... We were lied to all those years with nothing but false information that only put everyone's health at risk!!!!! :( Just like the new "Keto Diet" which is bad for your heart!!!!! Yet so many people are on it!!!!! ... :( I really believe that a balanced diet and eating natural ingredients is the best diet!!!!!
Do you have that ever so difficult to find Delia Smith Christmas special? I think it was filmed in the early 1990's. I would love to see that again someday.
J.T. Masters yes I tried to upload it but was taken down due to copyright. However you can watch it instantly on Amazon Prime video and some other providers although you have to pay per episode or the whole series
Fabulous video - food, Christmas, Christmas music and booze! Loved it all! Thanks for sharing!🌲😀 just a wee nit pic - eggs are not considered vegetarian fare.......
They used to be. A great many vegetarians, even into the nineties, ate eggs and fish. It wasn't as religious as veganism. It was more about being anti fat back then.
more people need to watch Delia. Can you imagine American households that could have the immense knowledge of home cookery that Brits have. I'm probably the only American in my circle of influence who knows who Delia Smith even is and it's a shame
True but the USA had Julia Child who was similar in style to Delia and neither did not assume you knew how to do everything and just needed a few hints like most so called celebrity chefs do but showed how to do the basics.
@TheRenaissanceman65 Been making cakes all my life thanks. Never had to add eggs at such a tiny rate, and never had a mixture curdle (not due to eggs anyway)

TV gold. Thank you.
Wow, I can tell that the gentleman can bake really well, thank you so much for sharing.
Love watching these. Reminds me of cooking with my beautiful mother. ❤😘
I like the kitchen appliances. Classic stile never dies.
How great was that! .....Fantastic, & Delia looked so young
9:35 That titling music really places this in time!
AHHH - the graphics and the music at the end. VERY early 80s!
Fabulous! 🥰
The video glitches were a delightful blast of nostalgia
I tried John’s recipe last Christmas. Fun to make … and eat!

I always use Salted butter.
@@deliasmithfan It was very common to use a specialist margarins back then such as "Stork", which were marketed as specifically for baking
I'm presuming that she meant the margarines that were marketed specifically for baking back then, such as Stork (which I think is still available)
My mum used to make the oat crunchies quite often. Not my favourites but my dad always liked them
I stole the recipe for squiggly cake as a teenager. My go to Yule log
It looks so yummmyyy and delicious

@@deliasmithfan I will look into that. Thank you very much for letting me know.
I like the idea of buttermilk scones or buttermilk bread rolls.

Is it me or does her outfit look like a Supergirl costume without the S?
Margarine noooooooo. Butter always butter.
Ah thats John Tovey wow!!!!
Adding in the beaten eggs a teaspoonful at a time?
Seems rather tortuous.

One person thinks Delia is either boring or not attractive enough
Delia's husband is a jammy get.
