Pruning a Tree Formed Aucuba Japonica (Gold Dust Plant) - July 8

- I have pruned these two Aucuba to a tree form many years ago. Each year, I would do a maintenance cut for size, shape and form.
I would perform the following:
1. Remove any growth from the bottom to maintain the lollipop look
2. Shake off any dead/dying leaves
3. Trim the bottom up for better form and better air circulation for plants underneath
4. Remove dead branches
5. Remove crossed branches
6. Thin the branches to reduce crowdiness
7. Using thinning cuts, reduce the height
8. If the above does not already achieve a good shape, cut to attain the preferred shape

Wow. Beautiful. Just what i was looking for. I have two shrubs in pots which i would love in a tree form.
Yes. Tree form make them look better. If they are in pots, even better. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
I learned something new. Love the tree form. ❤
Awesome! Thank you!
This is absolutely beautiful.
Thanks!
TY for this tutorial. Your Stardust Acuba are beautiful. I discovered also by limbing up shrubs gives us the advantage to under plant which opens up the garden space to appear more wider.
Agree 100%😊😊
Wooow, so beautiful. How old are those aucuba trees, please? And can you use that cuttings for propagation? Greetings from Croatia.
They are over 20 years old. Yes, the cuttings can be rooted for propagation. There are also seedlings around the base. I recently confirm they are from the Gold Dust plant. Thanks for your comments:)
Beautiful! When is time to start tree form? I planted aucuba last year, it’s still small. Do I wait for pruning or I can start now with turning it into tree form? Sending love from Serbia.
My English is not great. Sorry!
I normally do not prune during the first full year. After that, I prune little by little from the bottom. In no time, you will find it fairly easy. It is also very calming while you do it.
Thank you for your question and good luck 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
