Hi Austin I wouldn't mind buying like 3 shiny mews from you if you ever decide to sell Ik it's funny to buy them but as a person from old Gen pokemon who use to do the breeding and egg method for Shinies especially a shiny charmander I kinda don't have the time like I use to anymore even do this process
I did this way back in 2017 when I was living in my car. It was the only thing that brought me joy. Glad to see people are still committed to this ancient art.

I DO NOT recommend trying to dupe the Mew with the reset method. I and many others lost save data immediately doing this. Just do the Ditto + fly glitch to get additional Mews safely. It doesn't take long. My second time through after this loss took about 7 hours. I transferred 4 Mews, 3 of which were shiny, and gave 2 to my kids. That was worth it. That said, this is easily one of the coolest, most thorough, and most fun video I've ever used on YT. Austin John is a legend!
@Mxson Noooo. Idk what it is exactly, but apparently the virtual console makes doing this even more volatile than it was on the GB. For what it's worth, the box dupe glitch works fine on Gold/Silver/Crystal though. I used it many times without fail to help build my living dex for Johto.
Hey unfortunately i have fallen in this as well, but now my save corrupts each time i use 8F, i am certain that i used the same items and mons since i restored my save using Chekpoint, but yeah weird stuff
Short info to obtaining 8F, you dont need to tap A the hole time, you can just scroll down until you find the nugget or 8F (while item underflow is active) and also just scroll up again until you are back in your bag while a item is selected. Something I noticed by doing this.
Problem: What if the Nugget is apart of a stack of nuggets? Is it still ok to use that one? I'm not seeing 8f or the just one Nugget. Also getting a different glitch screen then his.
I panicked when that happened to me the first few times, but it all worked out in the end! I did get curious about what was at the bottom of the glitched bag though, so I checked and it just had the text "too bad!". I then was unable to leave the bag or move up or anything, so I reset the game before touching anything else. Just thought it was neat.
Bonus info for the trainer fly glitch: if you growl at the slowpoke 6 times, the Mew will be lvl 1. If it then gains less then (I think it was) 64/63or less, it'll lvl up to 100. All Pokemon in the medium fast EXP group (Nidoking, Mew, Poliwhirl, Gengar, and the starters, maybe some more I'm missing) all have that glitch Also the old man glitch encounters are based on your name or if you used a default name. There are online calcs that show you what you're old man encounters are. You probably don't want a trainer, so that's why I'd recommend looking into it Edit 8 months later: I am actually now going to be doing this for shiny Mew and the legendary birds. Wish me luck! Edit: if you are playing Blue and doing the trainer fly glitch for Arbok and dont have Parasect yet, if you dont get a Pokemon to have 45 Special, but instead it goes over and ends up with 46, Parasect has a Special stat index nunber of 46, so its another route Edit: forgot to update this with the fact that not only i finished this successfully, but also got a shiny Mewtwo and 1 of each of the legendary birds. And only had 2 badges because of other RB glitches. @@vaporeondark1821 neat Also if you can get the Pokemon you battle to +6 ATK, (Ditto transformed into a Swords dance Mon with 21 special easiest method), the Mew when caught will transform into a Ditto, because the only wild Pokemon with transform should be Ditto, and the game makes it a Ditto you caught
if this matters to some of you at all, you can also manipulate the Nature of your mew (when its transfered over) if you let it gain some experience. If the last 2 numbers of your current experience are 13, 38, 63, or 88 youll get a jolly nature. if your current experience is or ends with 10, 35, 60, or 85 then its timid. there are other combinations to get the other natures but i cant write all of that down, figured these would be most useful.
For anyone wondering, this guide is specific for the ENG version of the game. For example, 8F in the GER version is named 7S and you need different items to execute. So anyone who wants to use this (really great) guide, get the english Version
@@dariosanchez2557 In other European versions In other European versions, the 8F item is named 7EME ETAGE (French) / S7 (German) / 7°P (Italian) / P7 (Spanish). It still executes code the same way, but the setup will be different due to differences in the memory layout, with the third item at $D327 rather than $D322. For the above three setups, the common fix is to replace the Onix with a Graveler (or to replace the Tangela with a Fearow to run code starting from item 1).
Ah, thanks for that tip! I just tried to do this trick on a German copy, but in German games the item "dire hit" does not exist. There is only X-accuracy. So I was wondering, if I could find any hints here in the comments and you gave it to me. :-) I will look for a guide for the German copies and paste it here, if I find it.
After around 16 hours I finally have the shiny Mew in my pokemon home. Thanks for making this tutorial Austin, it's really clear to follow and just amazing

@AustinJohnPlays do u have to play all on one go or can u save and turn it off and then come back to hit ltr ( for example in the begining after u catch mew but before encountering missingno) and thanks so much this video was absolutely awesome!!!
Some additional info that became relevant during my attempt at this: the version of missingno that evolves into kangashkhan is specifically 'M, which CANNOT APPEAR IF YOU CHOOSE A DEFAULT NAME. if you don't name your own character, you need to catch one at the safari zone. Also, if you did input a custom name, not every missingno sprite that appears is 'M. There's at least two other encounters that don't evolve when caught.
@@megatronron5494I also chose Red because I thought it would look nice on the other shiny pokemon I import with this XD but yeah kanga has the highest chance of appearing in the zone directly to the right of the starting zone. just take the first exit on the right and that's the screen. I believe it's a 4% chance but it doesn't have too bad of a catchrate.
@@megatronron5494 If you enter the section of Safari Zone where it spawns and fly out of it to Cinnibar, then you’re free to surf the coast and encounter every mon in that area, including Kangaskhan, without worrying about SZ mechanics.
A couple of notes (I am also on the 3DS version and not sure if it works in other versions): * You don't need to spam/mash X with the trainer at 5:39. The game buffers inputs (for example you don't need to wait for your character to finish walking before inputting a new direction), just tap downwards, and hold X down. No timing required really. * At 6:50, if you beat this trainer's first pokemon, and then intentionally lose to the last pokemon with the Special stat that summons Mew, you can still get Mew, without having marked that trainer as "defeated," allowing you to do the glitch again and get MORE Mews, skipping the box corruption glitch at 38:47 that might trash your save file. Although now you have to get another X-Accuracy and have multiple uses of 8F if you want all of them to be legit shinies. Whichever seems less risky to you I guess
Do you need to do the duplication glitch? Or it that if you just want more than one shiny? I got all the way to the end and used 8F twice (once and then tossed x accuracy, used again) and then when I went to check on the mew in the box, There was nothing there anymore. Reset my game but then my data got destroyed.

@@xPertShooting every version has unique glitches, that one may not work in the spanish version. Many glitches were never available or achieved the same way in europe except for the english versions.

As a former 151 glitch speedrunner, it's a treat getting to see people learn how to do the item and PC underflow for Red/Blue. It's a lot of fun seeing people break open a game like this!
I did this in Yellow back in the late 90s, didn't know half of this. The carts battery died so I have a fresh save, may as well try again but this time try to send it up. Def gonna need to figure out how to get it to Violet though as I never had Poke Bank or Home.
It's not like someone just messed around randomly till they found the right combination of actions. I mean, they probably did for bits of it, but the core of it is basically like writing code (programming). It's called arbitrary code execution, look it up.
Austin: Thank you. This is incredible. I wasn't sure I was going to try again at first after my file was destroyed when trying to duplicate a Mew. I restarted and was able to get the Mew as a shiny up into Pokemon HOME and Sword. It's a beautiful thing! I do want to give a quick PSA: the duplication glitch is extremely finicky and could corrupt the save (in my opinion it's the most dangerous part of this tutorial). That being said, if people want to get more Mew in their game, just do the "trainer-fly-glitch Ditto variant" to spawn a Mew like the first 2 you cover in this tutorial. After putting so much time into getting this to work, the pain of losing the file is devastating. Thanks again Austin for bringing the Pokemon community greatness!
in case someone reads this and is still interested: since you are already abusing ACE when doing this for the first time I would recommend using the "Catch'em all-Glitch". It's another ACE that is easy to do and lets you battle (and therefore catch) EVERY pokemon in the first gen. The itemlist is: 8F (in my case S7 since I'm german), Map (Item doesn't matter, I just used the Map), Lemonade (the number of Lemonades determines the Pokemon you encounter based on the Index-Number (1 Lemonade = Rhydon)), TM34 x94, TM08 x201. As I said I'm german so I can't tell for sure if this is the correct Itemlist for the english versions. You better look it up on the Internet to make sure :) As I said this lets you infinitely encounter EVERY Pokemon in the game. Just use 8F with the correct party and the correct Itemlist and exit the Menu and the encounter will start Edit: Oh yeah in the german version we have to use Graveler instead of Onix to make it work. Again, I'd highly recommend looking up an english guide for this, I just wanted to tell you that it's possible :)
Saving people some arithmetic. This stuff is plenty confusing as is with the glitched characters in your inventory, If you've been following allong with Austin up until 23:35, here is how many of each item you need to toss to get the requisite amount. 1. 8F (NA) 2. ANY ITEM 129-40=89 3. Dire Hit 129-71=58 4. Iron 129-37=92 5. X Accuracy 129-10=119 6. Water Stone 129-67=62 7. Burn Heal 129-79=50 8. Poke Ball 129-86=43 9. Antidote 129-86=43 10. Protein 129-67=62 11. PP Up 129- 69 = 60 12. Ice Heal 129-79=50 13. Lemonade (NA, But make sure you buy 5 from the vending machine for 5+128=133 Total.) 14. Great Ball 129-79=50 15 Fresh Water 129-95=34 16. TM01 (NA, any number is fine)
Strictly speaking, if it is shiny is not legal because there is no legit way to obtain a Shiny Mew in gen 1 because the Mew that was distributed through evens has a fixed set of DVs that make it impossible to be shiny. But it can be moved to Pokemon Home because GF only checks the OT, not the DVs.
@Austin John Plays the pokemon you encounter at 13:00 is actually based on the name you choose for your save. There is a page out there on a wiki that has all the pokemon you can get based on the names you choose.

This is such a fantastic guide! I am attempting this in an already completed copy, so I had mistakenly already fought the Youngster at 6:53 . If anyone else has this problem, here is what I did (found this in a random forum post): I started the glitch with the guy next to where I caught the Abra, similar to what AustinJohn did (which causes the menu glitch). Then I went and found a random trainer (any trainer works, from my understanding). After you have fought the second trainer (any trainer you can) and now have access to your start menu, fly to Vermillion City, walk to the southeast to Diglett's Cave and walk around the start of the cave until you find a LEVEL 16 DIGLETT. Beat that diglett and fly back to the first trainer (the trainer whose attention you got, but flew / teleported away from). Once you near that trainer's location, your start menu will pop up. Press B to exit the start menu and you will be fighting a LEVEL 7 MEW. Good luck!

It took a couple of days, and I had to search hours in the safari zone for a kangaskhan because I used a pre-set name, but I finally got 2 shiny mews by using this video! Thank you so much Austin!
@@nurfed4883 If you chose one of the three preset names, like ash, it causes a missingno called 'M to not appear because of how the glitch works, 'M evolves in kangaskhan which is needed so I had to get one the normal way in the safari zone which takes forever.
You could just summon a kangaskhan using the nugget bridge glitch and a reference sheet of who you need to battle for kangaskahn to boot up at the bridge
I know this video is nearly a year old, but you have no idea how much it means to me. I corrupted my Pokémon Blue save back when you posted this after the nearly 14 hours of prep from making one small mistake regarding the amount of a specific item being held and lost all interest in trying again. That is, up until recently. I said "what the heck" and decided to give it another go. After about a collected 18 long hours and dubious double-/triple-/quadruple-checking, I finally got the blue cat. :) Thank you for this tutorial, it was immensely helpful!
Another cool thing about the missigno area. The tiles do not have location data and take location from the last grass patch you entered. if you go to the safari zone and encounter a pokemon the strip missigno is on will have safari zone pokemon. Great for hard to catch pokemon like khangaskhan, chansey and tauros and they cant run away.
Now do this same breakdown for the Emerald Mew! Hunt it and transfer it up! Great guide Austin. Really appreciate the deep drive and the great breakdown.

So cool watching the entire process in one video! I caught the glitch Mew in VC Yellow a few years ago, but I from the beginning accepted that mine would be trapped in the game since I was not going through the effort to transfer it out of Gen 1 myself.
Actually yes there is a VC Yellow specific way you can transfer it. You have to glitch it and make Bank think it’s a legit Mew. It’s hard to find good instructions but keep digging online.
@@kiefdreams Which is frankly BS since because of how packed the GameBoy cartridge was, GameFreak originally just snuck in Mew. Yeah, you heard me right, the Nugget Bridge/Fly glitch Mew was not actually a real glitch, at least not in intent. And somehow it's one now.
I have just finished doing this and have successfully transferred them over to Pokémon Home. There was some things that were different for me specifically when doing the item underflow section. It just kept scrolling for me and eventually hit things. Using this video I just made sure to grab the appropriate one Nugget under HM04 and Bicycle, and again with the 8F. Amazingly what corrupted my save was trying the dupe glitch (I did transfer off my Mews before attempting this) I am not sure what I did wrong but thank you @AustinJohnPlays for the video you have my like and subscribe as a new viewer.
The same happened to me, but I didn't make it shiny first. I got greedy and now I feel bad for losing my save and 22 hours of dicking around with these exploits...

A friend of mine pointed out that the instant text exploit works in Pokemon red and blue still so that might help speed it up 🙂 Talk to the bicycle shop owner and spamming b this will let you skip text boxes instantly. PRO TIP: To avoid losing all progress after possible save file corruption while duplicating, mod your 3ds and back up your save file, so that way if it corrupts, you can just easily restore it. I would have lost hours if it wasn't for that. Great tutorial btw, I officially have a shiny mew now :)

Tip. if you spam growl 6 time on the last pokemon before encounter Mew he will be lvl1. This is because the glitch read the pokemons Attack stat as Mews lvl that why mew is lvl 7. if you catch a lvl 1 Mew and use him in battle and earn less EXP than he needs to reach lvl 2 he will instatly go to lvl 100 instead.
I’d imagine this is because of Mew requiring 56 Exp to reach level 2, meaning if you kill something like a Level 1 Pidgey, it should give you less than 56 and thus glitch the game to give you level 100. Correct?
@@phantomguy55 he means less than needed to reach next level. Basically battle a level 1 Pidgey or just switch from mew after the encounter so mew gets some exp but not all given

Thanks for making this video. Over a year ago I had already done the prep to get 8F, but the guild i was following changed the OT number 1 value at a time. I followed yours, everything went great and smooth... until I tried the duplicate >< save file gone. Nothing transfered. Re did everything today got 1 mew safely transferred to home :) i did have a mini worry moment going back through the second time when you called PP up - HP up and said a hp of 133 instead of 233. Can't believe the lvl of details you did and having to do it over again in just a day.

There’s actually one more shiny Mew event you missed at the end of the video! There was a shiny Mew event given out in New York City in 2002 called the PCNY Mew! Players were only allowed to redeem the event once (the machine that gave the event checked your save file to enforce this) and the Mew you received only had a 0.5% chance to be shiny! Not sure if anyone actually has it though
The shiny glitch that John used to make mew shiny can be used with other Pokémon, but you will have to do missingno on the x accuracy everytime to get to 178 to make a pokemon shiny
As a 32 year old guy who grew up on Pokemon, I have been working hard over the past 3 years to get caught back up. I took a long break after White. Mew is my FAVORITE Pokemon. I did this within 3 days from when I saw this video. THANK YOU.
To avoid the corruption of your save file via the Mew duplication glitch before making one shiny. Use the other recommended pokemon as your HM mules. Tenta I used surf, my pidgey utilized fly and my parasect took on cut. This allows you to transfer out 2 Mews still, while lessening your chances of destroying +8 hours of work.
After an 11 hour run I was successful and my Mew is sitting in Pokémon Violet. Thank you so much for this guide! If it wasn’t for this very video I would not have even attempted this. It was an intimidating task at first but with your help I got it first try!
I had tossed around the idea of doing the Faraway Island Mew hunt for a bit, but considering how much extra hardware I'd have to purchase for it, this seems way easier. I plan on getting myself an SD card at the store later today, and buying VC Pokemon Red just to perform this hunt. It sounds daunting enough, but I'm confident I could pull this off. How the hell did someone figure this out for the first time. It almost seems like a troll "guide" that people would make to supposedly get rare Pokémon/things; so the fact this is legit and works is utterly amazing to me. I started a playthrough of Pokémon Red the day before you posted this video. The original goal was to collect an “all origin mark” living Dex out of my childhood games. Seeing your video made that playthrough even more enjoyable and today, I got my shiny Mew into PokeBank. Thanks so much for the Grade A content you put out! PS I think the most dangerous part of this entire vid is the Pokémon duplication glitch at the end. My heart dropped when you rebooted to duplicate Mew. That window of success is so small in Gen 1!

For anyone trying this on a game other than the English version, note that the amount of items and the Pokemon team setup shown in the video are not accurate for you. That means the methods shown in the video are working fine until you get the item 8F. (Note that the item 8F can also have a different name in different games. In the German version, for example, S7.) For team setup and item amounts, I would recommend checking the Reddit post. There should be a solution in the comments. I found the answers about the specifics in the post's comments but I'll try them out later because now I first want to recover from preparing a wrong setup >.< Anyway, thanks, Austin, for the great guide :)

I'm glad to see that you're using 8F for this. Just a heads up and I'm not sure if you know, but because of emulation differences between both the 3ds and the original hardware interactions, glitches that wouldn't normally corrupt your save file now have a possibility to. I think the reason is it has to do with echo ram or something else that's not very well utilized on the hardware.
Something I’ve seen NOBODY mention is him having almost all the proper music playing where it should be with the Let’s Go versions. What insane attention to detail and extra effort that did not need to be there but he put anyways.
I happened upon the reddit post you mentioned at the end of the video a few months ago and decided to give this a try. Once I was able to do it, I sent 20 shiny mews at level 100 (using exp underflow to instantly level them) into home and used them to trade for other legendary/mythical pokemon I didn't have. My next challenge is getting a full gen 1 shiny living dex doing this method!
As a software developer, I really have to give a hat tip to whoever realized that they can take the memory state of the shiny event mew's valid data, recreated it using a specific party and item list, and then inject that memory into the game state to modify the mew. It really took a lot of work, i am sure.
It's not really that difficult. Your only real goal is to write the proper OT and ID to a Mew somewhere in the data, and Bank takes care of the rest. All the hard work was on the Gen1 side. Thankfully, that's a glitchy mess with ACE galore, so it's just a matter of finding the right values for your payload.

Doing this today. I got my mew at level 1 so I could boost it to 100 and ride out the rest of the game progression with minimal effort, and gonna do the same for the pidgey. I've never done the mew glitch properly and was heartbroken to learn that it resulted in an invalid, untranferable mew, so I'm really happy a working method exists! EDIT: I now have the shiny mew in my HOME box and can confirm everything works and is stable! My final game time was 8:50 :)
Kudos austin. I really admire you for doing videos that really matter and not just for the views and the money. Although i dont see myself having the patience to go through this, I will still buy pokemon red from the 3ds eshop because who knows i might want to do this next holiday.
I did this whole thing twice - it finally worked! First, my save data was corrupted via resetting at the wrong point while trying to duplicate mons in the box (8+hrs in, 8F obtained, duplicating Mew and somehow hit reset 2x before the game actually reset/corrupted.) Went back through from a fresh New Game, worked like a charm (6hrs to complete). Wonderful guide, thanks AJP!!
I’m doing something wrong. When duplicating the X. Specials, my encounter with Missingno automatically reduces my 9 by 2 and I have 7. Do I have to encounter Missingno twice or am I doing something wrong?
For anyone attempting this, as of Homes last update it now flags this as problematic and will trigger error code 10015, which is Homes error for hacked mons. If its already in a gen 8/9 game, it will stay there permamently.
This actually makes me feel kind of better. I didn't want to spend the time to do it, but I also felt really anxious about not doing it. Knowing that it flags it as a hacked mon now makes me feel justified in not investing the time, so thanks!

I just finished this unique shiny hunt as a challenge. It was actually a lot fun to play the game again and get one of my favorite Pokemon. Going to make one as my catching pokemon for sure.

I'm so happy this still works I was kind of worried that since the shop closed down it wouldn't work anymore. I spent 18 hours also since I'm not used to the Gameboy version. I did read that Nintendo announced that online functionality for 3DS will shut down in April 2024. So hurry up and try to get as many of those old-school Pokemon games out of the way.

I DO NOT recommend trying to dupe the Mew with the reset method. I and many others lost save data immediately doing this. Just do the Ditto + fly glitch to get additional Mews safely. It doesn't take long.
My second time through after this loss took about 7 hours. I transferred 4 Mews, 3 of which were shiny, and gave 2 to my kids. That was worth it.
That said, this is easily one of the coolest, most thorough, and most fun video I've ever used on YT. Austin John is a legend!

@Mxson Noooo. Idk what it is exactly, but apparently the virtual console makes doing this even more volatile than it was on the GB.
For what it's worth, the box dupe glitch works fine on Gold/Silver/Crystal though. I used it many times without fail to help build my living dex for Johto.
Hey unfortunately i have fallen in this as well, but now my save corrupts each time i use 8F, i am certain that i used the same items and mons since i restored my save using Chekpoint, but yeah weird stuff
I know because the reset timing is hard so it isn’t recommended it is similar to getting the 3 starters glitch which i have failed multiple of times

Short info to obtaining 8F, you dont need to tap A the hole time, you can just scroll down until you find the nugget or 8F (while item underflow is active) and also just scroll up again until you are back in your bag while a item is selected.

Problem: What if the Nugget is apart of a stack of nuggets? Is it still ok to use that one? I'm not seeing 8f or the just one Nugget. Also getting a different glitch screen then his.
I panicked when that happened to me the first few times, but it all worked out in the end! I did get curious about what was at the bottom of the glitched bag though, so I checked and it just had the text "too bad!". I then was unable to leave the bag or move up or anything, so I reset the game before touching anything else. Just thought it was neat.
What about tapping b when you scroll up? Is that necessary?
Bonus info for the trainer fly glitch: if you growl at the slowpoke 6 times, the Mew will be lvl 1. If it then gains less then (I think it was) 64/63or less, it'll lvl up to 100.
All Pokemon in the medium fast EXP group (Nidoking, Mew, Poliwhirl, Gengar, and the starters, maybe some more I'm missing) all have that glitch
Also the old man glitch encounters are based on your name or if you used a default name. There are online calcs that show you what you're old man encounters are. You probably don't want a trainer, so that's why I'd recommend looking into it

Edit: if you are playing Blue and doing the trainer fly glitch for Arbok and dont have Parasect yet, if you dont get a Pokemon to have 45 Special, but instead it goes over and ends up with 46, Parasect has a Special stat index nunber of 46, so its another route
Edit: forgot to update this with the fact that not only i finished this successfully, but also got a shiny Mewtwo and 1 of each of the legendary birds. And only had 2 badges because of other RB glitches. Thanks again Austin, this was super useful and helpful, and doing item underflow was a childhood dream come true because i Watched a lot of MissingnoXpert as a kid

Also if you can get the Pokemon you battle to +6 ATK, (Ditto transformed into a Swords dance Mon with 21 special easiest method), the Mew when caught will transform into a Ditto, because the only wild Pokemon with transform should be Ditto, and the game makes it a Ditto you caught

if this matters to some of you at all, you can also manipulate the Nature of your mew (when its transfered over) if you let it gain some experience. If the last 2 numbers of your current experience are 13, 38, 63, or 88 youll get a jolly nature. if your current experience is or ends with 10, 35, 60, or 85 then its timid. there are other combinations to get the other natures but i cant write all of that down, figured these would be most useful.
For anyone wondering, this guide is specific for the ENG version of the game. For example, 8F in the GER version is named 7S and you need different items to execute. So anyone who wants to use this (really great) guide, get the english Version

In other European versions
In other European versions, the 8F item is named 7EME ETAGE (French) / S7 (German) / 7°P (Italian) / P7 (Spanish). It still executes code the same way, but the setup will be different due to differences in the memory layout, with the third item at $D327 rather than $D322.
For the above three setups, the common fix is to replace the Onix with a Graveler (or to replace the Tangela with a Fearow to run code starting from item 1).
Ah, thanks for that tip! I just tried to do this trick on a German copy, but in German games the item "dire hit" does not exist. There is only X-accuracy. So I was wondering, if I could find any hints here in the comments and you gave it to me. :-)

Some additional info that became relevant during my attempt at this: the version of missingno that evolves into kangashkhan is specifically 'M, which CANNOT APPEAR IF YOU CHOOSE A DEFAULT NAME. if you don't name your own character, you need to catch one at the safari zone. Also, if you did input a custom name, not every missingno sprite that appears is 'M. There's at least two other encounters that don't evolve when caught.

@@megatronron5494I also chose Red because I thought it would look nice on the other shiny pokemon I import with this XD but yeah kanga has the highest chance of appearing in the zone directly to the right of the starting zone. just take the first exit on the right and that's the screen. I believe it's a 4% chance but it doesn't have too bad of a catchrate.
@@megatronron5494 If you enter the section of Safari Zone where it spawns and fly out of it to Cinnibar, then you’re free to surf the coast and encounter every mon in that area, including Kangaskhan, without worrying about SZ mechanics.

A couple of notes (I am also on the 3DS version and not sure if it works in other versions):
* You don't need to spam/mash X with the trainer at 5:39. The game buffers inputs (for example you don't need to wait for your character to finish walking before inputting a new direction), just tap downwards, and hold X down. No timing required really.
* At 6:50, if you beat this trainer's first pokemon, and then intentionally lose to the last pokemon with the Special stat that summons Mew, you can still get Mew, without having marked that trainer as "defeated," allowing you to do the glitch again and get MORE Mews, skipping the box corruption glitch at 38:47 that might trash your save file. Although now you have to get another X-Accuracy and have multiple uses of 8F if you want all of them to be legit shinies. Whichever seems less risky to you I guess

Do you need to do the duplication glitch? Or it that if you just want more than one shiny? I got all the way to the end and used 8F twice (once and then tossed x accuracy, used again) and then when I went to check on the mew in the box, There was nothing there anymore. Reset my game but then my data got destroyed.
The trainer at 6:50 spawns me a Nidoqueen not a Mew I don't know what I'm doing wrong someone please help

@@xPertShooting every version has unique glitches, that one may not work in the spanish version. Many glitches were never available or achieved the same way in europe except for the english versions.

I did this in Yellow back in the late 90s, didn't know half of this. The carts battery died so I have a fresh save, may as well try again but this time try to send it up.

It's not like someone just messed around randomly till they found the right combination of actions. I mean, they probably did for bits of it, but the core of it is basically like writing code (programming). It's called arbitrary code execution, look it up.
They figured out the numbers that were needed and then just did the math of what items they needed.
they probably found each different glitch and then just put them together in a sequence to make this possible

Austin: Thank you. This is incredible. I wasn't sure I was going to try again at first after my file was destroyed when trying to duplicate a Mew. I restarted and was able to get the Mew as a shiny up into Pokemon HOME and Sword. It's a beautiful thing! I do want to give a quick PSA: the duplication glitch is extremely finicky and could corrupt the save (in my opinion it's the most dangerous part of this tutorial). That being said, if people want to get more Mew in their game, just do the "trainer-fly-glitch Ditto variant" to spawn a Mew like the first 2 you cover in this tutorial. After putting so much time into getting this to work, the pain of losing the file is devastating. Thanks again Austin for bringing the Pokemon community greatness!

in case someone reads this and is still interested: since you are already abusing ACE when doing this for the first time I would recommend using the "Catch'em all-Glitch". It's another ACE that is easy to do and lets you battle (and therefore catch) EVERY pokemon in the first gen. The itemlist is: 8F (in my case S7 since I'm german), Map (Item doesn't matter, I just used the Map), Lemonade (the number of Lemonades determines the Pokemon you encounter based on the Index-Number (1 Lemonade = Rhydon)), TM34 x94, TM08 x201. As I said I'm german so I can't tell for sure if this is the correct Itemlist for the english versions. You better look it up on the Internet to make sure :) As I said this lets you infinitely encounter EVERY Pokemon in the game. Just use 8F with the correct party and the correct Itemlist and exit the Menu and the encounter will start
Edit: Oh yeah in the german version we have to use Graveler instead of Onix to make it work. Again, I'd highly recommend looking up an english guide for this, I just wanted to tell you that it's possible :)

Gen 1 glitches are insane, you can also catch glitch pokemon in gen 1 and trade them into gen 2 which turns them into gen 2 pokemon
Ooh interesting, I've done the Nugget Bridge Mew in both Red and Yellow on 3ds vc, didn't know it was possible to get a legal one, let alone a shiny!
Strictly speaking, if it is shiny is not legal because there is no legit way to obtain a Shiny Mew in gen 1 because the Mew that was distributed through evens has a fixed set of DVs that make it impossible to be shiny. But it can be moved to Pokemon Home because GF only checks the OT, not the DVs.

@Austin John Plays the pokemon you encounter at 13:00 is actually based on the name you choose for your save. There is a page out there on a wiki that has all the pokemon you can get based on the names you choose.

This is such a fantastic guide! I am attempting this in an already completed copy, so I had mistakenly already fought the Youngster at 6:53 . If anyone else has this problem, here is what I did (found this in a random forum post):
I started the glitch with the guy next to where I caught the Abra, similar to what AustinJohn did (which causes the menu glitch). Then I went and found a random trainer (any trainer works, from my understanding). After you have fought the second trainer (any trainer you can) and now have access to your start menu, fly to Vermillion City, walk to the southeast to Diglett's Cave and walk around the start of the cave until you find a LEVEL 16 DIGLETT. Beat that diglett and fly back to the first trainer (the trainer whose attention you got, but flew / teleported away from). Once you near that trainer's location, your start menu will pop up. Press B to exit the start menu and you will be fighting a LEVEL 7 MEW.

@@nurfed4883 If you chose one of the three preset names, like ash, it causes a missingno called 'M to not appear because of how the glitch works, 'M evolves in kangaskhan which is needed so I had to get one the normal way in the safari zone which takes forever.

You could just summon a kangaskhan using the nugget bridge glitch and a reference sheet of who you need to battle for kangaskahn to boot up at the bridge
I know this video is nearly a year old, but you have no idea how much it means to me. I corrupted my Pokémon Blue save back when you posted this after the nearly 14 hours of prep from making one small mistake regarding the amount of a specific item being held and lost all interest in trying again. That is, up until recently. I said "what the heck" and decided to give it another go. After about a collected 18 long hours and dubious double-/triple-/quadruple-checking, I finally got the blue cat. :) Thank you for this tutorial, it was immensely helpful!

Another cool thing about the missigno area. The tiles do not have location data and take location from the last grass patch you entered. if you go to the safari zone and encounter a pokemon the strip missigno is on will have safari zone pokemon. Great for hard to catch pokemon like khangaskhan, chansey and tauros and they cant run away.
Now do this same breakdown for the Emerald Mew! Hunt it and transfer it up! Great guide Austin. Really appreciate the deep drive and the great breakdown.

So cool watching the entire process in one video! I caught the glitch Mew in VC Yellow a few years ago, but I from the beginning accepted that mine would be trapped in the game since I was not going through the effort to transfer it out of Gen 1 myself.
That mew can’t be transferred so yeah its trapped forever either way
Actually yes there is a VC Yellow specific way you can transfer it. You have to glitch it and make Bank think it’s a legit Mew. It’s hard to find good instructions but keep digging online.

@@kiefdreams Which is frankly BS since because of how packed the GameBoy cartridge was, GameFreak originally just snuck in Mew. Yeah, you heard me right, the Nugget Bridge/Fly glitch Mew was not actually a real glitch, at least not in intent.
And somehow it's one now.
I have just finished doing this and have successfully transferred them over to Pokémon Home. There was some things that were different for me specifically when doing the item underflow section. It just kept scrolling for me and eventually hit things. Using this video I just made sure to grab the appropriate one Nugget under HM04 and Bicycle, and again with the 8F.
Amazingly what corrupted my save was trying the dupe glitch (I did transfer off my Mews before attempting this) I am not sure what I did wrong but thank you @AustinJohnPlays for the video you have my like and subscribe as a new viewer.
The same happened to me, but I didn't make it shiny first. I got greedy and now I feel bad for losing my save and 22 hours of dicking around with these exploits...

mine as well 😭i was trying to dupe to get a 2nd mew as i only got 1 in the beginning. I didnt trasnfer them and now have to start over. Well should be a bit faster this time

you have to time it perfectly or it will corrupt ur save same thing happens when u try the glitch to get all 3 starters

@@TheXenoRex My game corrupted on my 1st attempt while I was searching for 8F while item underflow was active, I'm about to activate it again on my second attempt. I wanted to have a shiny Mew on my Ultra Moon file and send the other one to Home, but I think I'll just play it safe for now.

PRO TIP: To avoid losing all progress after possible save file corruption while duplicating, mod your 3ds and back up your save file, so that way if it corrupts, you can just easily restore it. I would have lost hours if it wasn't for that. Great tutorial btw, I officially have a shiny mew now :)

Tip. if you spam growl 6 time on the last pokemon before encounter Mew he will be lvl1. This is because the glitch read the pokemons Attack stat as Mews lvl that why mew is lvl 7. if you catch a lvl 1 Mew and use him in battle and earn less EXP than he needs to reach lvl 2 he will instatly go to lvl 100 instead.
how could you get less exp tho?
I would also like to know how to get less xp, and if it changes anything in this process
I’d imagine this is because of Mew requiring 56 Exp to reach level 2, meaning if you kill something like a Level 1 Pidgey, it should give you less than 56 and thus glitch the game to give you level 100. Correct?
@@phantomguy55 he means less than needed to reach next level. Basically battle a level 1 Pidgey or just switch from mew after the encounter so mew gets some exp but not all given

Thanks for making this video. Over a year ago I had already done the prep to get 8F, but the guild i was following changed the OT number 1 value at a time. I followed yours, everything went great and smooth... until I tried the duplicate >< save file gone. Nothing transfered. Re did everything today got 1 mew safely transferred to home :) i did have a mini worry moment going back through the second time when you called PP up - HP up and said a hp of 133 instead of 233. Can't believe the lvl of details you did and having to do it over again in just a day.

There’s actually one more shiny Mew event you missed at the end of the video! There was a shiny Mew event given out in New York City in 2002 called the PCNY Mew! Players were only allowed to redeem the event once (the machine that gave the event checked your save file to enforce this) and the Mew you received only had a 0.5% chance to be shiny! Not sure if anyone actually has it though
The shiny glitch that John used to make mew shiny can be used with other Pokémon, but you will have to do missingno on the x accuracy everytime to get to 178 to make a pokemon shiny
As a 32 year old guy who grew up on Pokemon, I have been working hard over the past 3 years to get caught back up. I took a long break after White. Mew is my FAVORITE Pokemon. I did this within 3 days from when I saw this video. THANK YOU.
To avoid the corruption of your save file via the Mew duplication glitch before making one shiny. Use the other recommended pokemon as your HM mules. Tenta I used surf, my pidgey utilized fly and my parasect took on cut. This allows you to transfer out 2 Mews still, while lessening your chances of destroying +8 hours of work.
I didn’t put an HM on Mew. Made my one lv 7 shiny, tried to duplicate, and ruined my file 😭

I had tossed around the idea of doing the Faraway Island Mew hunt for a bit, but considering how much extra hardware I'd have to purchase for it, this seems way easier. I plan on getting myself an SD card at the store later today, and buying VC Pokemon Red just to perform this hunt. It sounds daunting enough, but I'm confident I could pull this off. I started a playthrough of Pokémon Red the day before you posted this video. The original goal was to collect an “all origin mark” living Dex out of my childhood games. Seeing your video made that playthrough even more enjoyable and today, I got my shiny Mew into PokeBank. Thanks so much for the Grade A content you put out!

part of this entire vid is the Pokémon duplication glitch at the end. My heart dropped when you rebooted to duplicate Mew. That window of success is so small in Gen 1!

For anyone trying this on a game other than the English version, note that the amount of items and the Pokemon team setup shown in the video are not accurate for you. That means the methods shown in the video are working fine until you get the item 8F. (Note that the item 8F can also have a different name in different games. In the German version, for example, S7.) For team setup and item amounts, I would recommend checking the Reddit post. There should be a solution in the comments. I found the answers about the specifics in the post's comments but I'll try them out later because now I first want to recover from preparing a wrong setup >.< Anyway, thanks, Austin, for the great guide :)

I'm glad to see that you're using 8F for this. Just a heads up and I'm not sure if you know, but because of emulation differences between both the 3ds and the original hardware interactions, glitches that wouldn't normally corrupt your save file now have a possibility to. I think the reason is it has to do with echo ram or something else that's not very well utilized on the hardware.
Something I’ve seen NOBODY mention is him having almost all the proper music playing where it should be with the Let’s Go versions. What insane attention to detail and extra effort that did not need to be there but he put anyways.

I happened upon the reddit post you mentioned at the end of the video a few months ago and decided to give this a try. Once I was able to do it, I sent 20 shiny mews at level 100 (using exp underflow to instantly level them) into home and used them to trade for other legendary/mythical pokemon I didn't have. My next challenge is getting a full gen 1 shiny living dex doing this method!
As a software developer, I really have to give a hat tip to whoever realized that they can take the memory state of the shiny event mew's valid data, recreated it using a specific party and item list, and then inject that memory into the game state to modify the mew. It really took a lot of work, i am sure.
It's not really that difficult. Your only real goal is to write the proper OT and ID to a Mew somewhere in the data, and Bank takes care of the rest. All the hard work was on the Gen1 side. Thankfully, that's a glitchy mess with ACE galore, so it's just a matter of finding the right values for your payload.

Doing this today. I got my mew at level 1 so I could boost it to 100 and ride out the rest of the game progression with minimal effort, and gonna do the same for the pidgey. I've never done the mew glitch properly and was heartbroken to learn that it resulted in an invalid, untranferable mew, so I'm really happy a working method exists! EDIT: I now have the shiny mew in my HOME box and can confirm everything works and is stable! My final game time was 8:50 :)

I did this whole thing twice - it finally worked! First, my save data was corrupted via resetting at the wrong point while trying to duplicate mons in the box (8+hrs in, 8F obtained, duplicating Mew and somehow hit reset 2x before the game actually reset/corrupted.) Went back through from a fresh New Game, worked like a charm (6hrs to complete). Wonderful guide, thanks AJP!!
I’m doing something wrong. When duplicating the X. Specials, my encounter with Missingno automatically reduces my 9 by 2 and I have 7. Do I have to encounter Missingno twice or am I doing something wrong?

For anyone attempting this, as of Homes last update it now flags this as problematic and will trigger error code 10015, which is Homes error for hacked mons. If its already in a gen 8/9 game, it will stay there permamently.
This actually makes me feel kind of better. I didn't want to spend the time to do it, but I also felt really anxious about not doing it. Knowing that it flags it as a hacked mon now makes me feel justified in not investing the time, so thanks!

I just finished this unique shiny hunt as a challenge. It was actually a lot fun to play the game again and get one of my favorite Pokemon. Going to make one as my catching pokemon for sure.

I'm so happy this still works I was kind of worried that since the shop closed down it wouldn't work anymore. I spent 18 hours also since I'm not used to the Gameboy version. I did read that Nintendo announced that online functionality for 3DS will shut down in April 2024. So hurry up and try to get as many of those old-school Pokemon games out of the way.

Apparently your save data can be deleted upon updating your game, connecting to POGO, or buying the DLC, it’s one of those. In Scarlet and Violet.
