That's the best penetrating oil there is. Cussing makes for good first aid as well, and a starting fluid replacement, and torque multiplier, and part breaker....
BlacktopDevil Excellent lesson in changing oil on your Motorcycle. I used to do Oil Changes and basic maintenance on my neighbour’s two Motorcycles he had. I got tired of him leaving my tools scattered on the garage floor and filthy. I saved him a decent amount of money by doing his maintenance. I just researched on the Net. He had his Harley in a shed and it fell over one time. He came and asked if I could help get his bike upright. The windshield was wedged awkwardly under a shelf. I asked him to lift up on the shelf. He didn’t when I put the Motorcycle upright the windshield snapped. He complained I broke the windshield, I asked him do you want me to go lay it back the way it was? He ended up trying to sue me for the windshield. I went to Court pleaded my side and won.
I've used a round flexible rubber kitchen jar grip to help hand tighten an oil filter on my cars oil filters. About to do my first 3-hole this year when the Ohio weather permits.
Nice tip on the DIY filter tool. A few years back I started using a K&N filter. Not because I think it is superior to wix or anything, it was just because it has a nut welded on the bottom that makes it easy to remove with a standard socket. Yeah I am that lazy lol.
I bought a oil filter wrench called " The Wench" one removes the oil filter, the other end removes the drain plug for the engine and the primary, I use on my 012 RK. Great Video.
In my experience, using the yellow Prestone Coolant funnel for filling the engine works best. The funnel upper side is large enough to hold the bottle upside down, the lower exit opening is almost as large as the dipstick opening which causes the oil to go in faster and aids in eliminating spills. BTW, great video.
Welcome to Garage videos lol. Winter sucks. I am not a fan of changing the oil I have a buddy with a lift . So I tend to go there when I do the 3 oil.Brian good job as always.I made the mistake with my Honda Interceptor where I did not put oil around the rubber seal and I ended up taking it off it just kept leaking.

Mr. Devil as a tech I've got to step in here and offer some tips. Overboard? Prolly so. But fail safe. 1. NEVER not replace your o-ring at every service interval. For the few cents it costs you're foolish not to. 2. Always use a light metal brush on your drain plug threads to clean them then spray with brake cleaner and wipe dry. Install o-ring 3. Apply Teflon paste to the threads of your drain plugs for added protection. Be sure not to get on magnet. Reinstall. 4. Torque first to 14lbs, back it off a little then re-torque to 17lbs 5. ALWAYS replace your transmission dipstick o-ring. The o-rings seat with heat. Once seal is broken they lose their integrity 6. Always replace your derby cover gasket 7. Prior to starting your oil change fill your oil filter 1/2 full with oil and let soak into filter 8. Place a light coat of oil on the rubber seal of your oil filter prior to install. Insert filter finger tight plus 1/4 turn. NO MORE!!! 9. Never hurts to filter your oil through a fine mesh filter to check for any metal shavings I've done this as long as I've been working on Harley's and have never had one come back for a leak.
I agree, tightening 3/4 to a full turn on the oil filter is just inviting a leak to start. I believe the service manual says 1/2 - 3/4 of a turn, which is more than adequate.
As a service tech at casper HD was required to brush on a small amount of white teflon tape on the drain plug threads so if anyone messed with plug after the bike left the shop the dealership could prove it was tampered with it can also help with any leaks .
Guys, you have got to check your manuals for your bike. I have a 17 Ultra and the full capacity says 5.0 quarts. But, the manual says to fill with 4.75 quarts and add if necessary. Ya gotta love Harleys, and yes I do! I think after ridding it a few days I got the entire 5 quarts in.
Better engineers would have made it easier to remove the filter. But it is a motorcycle and the room is limited. I really enjoy you and Mrs blacktops videos
Ever wonder why front engine mounts deteriorate? oil from filter running onto the rubber....Theres several ways to avoid it...a special plastic catch ( availabe from HD ) or cover the mount in plastic bags.
When the leaving the dipstick in after removing drain plug and oil is flowing fast, this could mean the bike has bad oilers. Some riders notice oil dripping on cam cover or nose cone, this would indicate the bad oilers or excessive blow by. Just a tip on when changing oil.
Thanks for the lesson. Any suggestions or information that can be passed on is always appreciated. One suggestion I have is to have Mrs Blacktop Devil be your photographer and have her do a few cameo appearances ❤😄✌
