Well, it wasn't so much the ultra high notes. Layne did not actually have the greatest range among rock singers. Being able to hit the 6th or 7th octave is not range. Range is being able to go in between the octaves flawlessly. Cornell, Mercury, Dio, and plenty of others have more range than Staley. Staley just had an incredibly unique voice, which he honed to be able to use with such awesome power and genuine expression of angst. The genius of his technique lies in his vowel modification, his use of compression, his control of nasal resonance, his great breath control, all of which contribute to the power and emotion we love him for. If you want singers whose range made them stand out, listen to Mercury, Cornell, Dickinson, Plant, Draiman, among other rock singers.

I'm watching the AIC Pro TV Archives atm and his vocals are the personification of perfection live and in studio. The only reason he'd redo anything while recording was because HE wasn't happy with the way he hit a note etc. Everyone else was always impressed...even in his deterioration later in their career/his life. Sean and Mike didn't think he'd be able to pull off Unplugged but you see Jerry look back at them with a smirk a lot of the time after Layne hit one of his unique ranges. He knew Layne could do it even though at that point things were rough between them all. I know first hand what heroin does to you and it's brutal. Changes who you were and how you felt about everything...an apathy yet numbness towards life.

Layne really pushed himself to get the notes and/or power he wanted and it showed. Sucks that the addiction proved too strong for him. He hated when fans bragged about being high in an attempt to impress him. He said in an interview that when people said that, he thought 'Why? Don't you listen to our songs?' The way he sang "Man in the Box" in this video was crazy. I've never heard that before. That song is tough as hell to sing, but to go up like that, I'd say impossible if there wasn't footage of it. That is throat breaking. He had so many songs with just real subtle note changes that are just not natural, like how the song "I Stay Away" ends. That always gives me chills. He will never be duplicated. Many have tried, many more will keep trying, and everyone will fail.

His voice transformed multiple times during his singing career (pre AIC/ Facelift / Dirt / Mad Season / brief return to AIC / Died, Get Born Again, Class of ‘99 - all feature a different version of Layne’s voice)
