I never seen this before, this is awesome. the first time I seen my father in action the Fijian number 6 Ilai Nabobo Vinaka vakalevu for putting this on UA-cam :)
The love, passion and the heart for rugby... the dedication and commitment... the pride and determination... and the flmboyant and beauty of fijian rugby ..no wonder they are know as 'THE FLYING FIJIAN'... We salute you all... vinaka vakalevu.
I was there! We went as a school rugby team and it was the most amazing game I had ever seen. As a second row I tried to replicate what I had seen the Fijian second rows do at school practice the following week and was promptly dropped from the team!
Fiji can beat any tier one nation team, if they stick to their style of rugby (open play). The Europeans notice their potential back then during Joe Levulas era 1939 onwards. And they brought in the structure rugby to close/box these kind of flairs down.Because they know if they won't come up with the structure style of rugby. They won't win any match against teams like Fiji..
Even by today's standards Fiji were right off the scale against a Lions strength Barbarians. This result shook the rugby world to the core. The old cosy club did not want rugby to go down this route, they couldn't compete, and no effort whatsoever was made to incorporate Fiji into the world game. The lawmakers also went into overdrive to ensure sides with a big pack and especially front five could dominate the game. Great shame, Just think how rugby might have been developed if these guys had been invited to the party straight after this!
Agree the old farts fucked the development of Rugby up and let Soccer take over and then the introduction of Rugby League also look at Scotland it's only played outside private schools in the Borders yet another country handed to Soccer because of the narrow minded elitism old boys network.
This is my area but what a strangle looking ground...reminds me of a smaller ground in the Canadian Football ground Emerson Lake and Palmer used for Fanfare for the Common Man
What caught my eye here was the unusual rugby stadium, seems very developed for what must have been an amateur club in 1970. Does it still exist, is it still the home of Garforth RFC or maybe it is a housing estate?
I believe the title says Gosforth. I currently play for Gosforth RFC in Newcastle Upon Tyne however, there has been multiple site changes since 1970 and seeing as I only began playing nearly 2 years ago my memory can't really trace back to a time before I was born. Despite this I've done a little research into my club and I think this is an old stadium that used to be in Gosforth but has since been demolished as I also live in Gosforth and the closest thing to a stadium is Newcastle Racecourse with the closest stadiums in the area being Kingston Park and St James' Park. I also think that this stadium was never a site of Gosforth RFC.
looks like the old county ground which was sold for development in late 80's for a supermarket from memory. sited across from gosforth metro station and what was northern rock offices
@@philipoldfield8613 and also across the the road from Gosforth Northern I think...a good little area of Rugby despite te monstor of Soccer and same as Hartlepool.
@@chrisr5499 gosforth and the northern rugby club were on opposites sides of the great north road further up from the county ground. in the professional era i think gosforth became newcastle falcons with financial backing from sir john hall.
Barry John, my rugby master at school, might well have made a difference, for I have never seen anyone on a rugby pitch read a game so intuitively, stand back a bit deep in his own half, a move that gave him space and time to kick for touch against an oncoming, marauding team that was promptly halted in its tracks. John's ability to kick long, deadly aimed kicks that landed just inside the touchline has never been matched, a 50-60 yds gain against the flow of the game. In my less-than-humble opinion, the greatest fly-half of all time...
Rugby to entertain, Fiji beat a very good BaBas side that day. Sadly we will never see the game played like this again with today's rule laden whistle happy bore fest.
Wow 😃😃The fitness level back in the days so freakish! all this Fijian players can reach the tryline together with the try scorer doesn't matter whether you are forward or backline. Hardly to see this kinda rugby and players these days.
@@sailasavakalala4531 Vinaka vakalevu Sai. It's thrill to watch this kind of entertaining rugby that the Fijians had exhibited earlier in the game worldover before the corporate rugby powers riddled the game with rules that not only destroy the love of rugby but gifted opportunities for other sports to dominate. Nevertheless Fiji still suffer from this changing laws, I would only hope the 7s code is not the emerging victim. Once again thank you for identifying these Flying Fijians as they are well known across the world. I watched most of these boys at Buckest Park, Suva in 1977 when they beat the British Lions.

Wow thanks for that comment💯👌
Rugby fucked up 90 years ago from this game imagine watching a full strength Yorkshire v Cornwall with all the Rugby League clubs.
Thanks for the upload. Just like watching rugby sevens, how the ball floats around.
now thats where we got our skills from
unorthodox type of play
this video got me emotional jst looking @ our grandads
The game seemed much more entertaining back then.
Thanks for the upload. Wonderful to watch my Fiji team. Isaaaa.
+AQUAMY VONZ its like watching live rugby this game. I was 2 years old this time
Goal kicking was a problem for Fiji for many years. I remember when a prop (Jo Rauto) was the regular kicker.
Thanks for uploading
no 2 jersey is my grandad isa taitai Eton is Racika..
Yeah. Your taitai Racika was our friend and next door neighbor in Vatuwaqa Housing in the 80s.
Racika played most of a game against Australia with a cracked bone in his leg.
Racika was also a 'Lion Tamer' in '77 with Bosco and Tuisese.
Nasave was also a Lion Tamer' with Racika, Tuisese, Bosco and Latilevu,
I thought the spectators was watching from a car park. Anyways love the video.
1:05 how about that. A prop flying like a winger
11:37 that's the first time I have seen anyone attempt to kick a penalty like that
thanks for the upload
