The 2023 update to After Effects made track mattes friendlier to use and much more versatile, so if ever there was a time to learn how to use track mattes in After Effects, that time is now. Track mattes are a super-powerful feature that may not be widely understood by a lot of After Effects users, but at least for you, that changes today.
Don’t know the difference between a mask and a matte? Never had to worry about an alpha channel or luminance values? That’s ok; we’ve got you. Join us on a matte-tastic journey through what a matte is, why you should use it, and all the creative ways you can take advantage of this cool tool in your own work.

What a brilliant, clear video. I think I have learnt more in this video than I have in a long long time. Thank you
2:04 thanks for telling about the transparency grid i was trying to remove sky with track matte and i was successful but couldnt see the transparent part so thought what was i was doing wrong but it was this toggle transparency switch after all
Excellent, thanks!
This update help me so much
Did you hear me screaming around 3:30? You did? Okay, cool LOL. That is a life changing update!!
We were wondering if everything was ok, phew! 😂
I still end up with a lot of layers, but at least now I can dump them at the bottom of the comp and not interspersed throughout. Although, a lot of us are probably guilty of not using the "shy layer" feature
Thanks dude
PERFECT
Thank's...👍
Cool stuff! Thank you. I'm just getting started. Do you have anything for basics? All I saw were very expensive courses that seemed to be beyond my understanding level (very new).
I was hoping for some details regarding the new workflow, when copying multiple layers that are linked together with the new track matte.
Honestly, one of the biggest ae updates.. kinda ever!?
someone just said hey should these layers be interchangeable? the data is already there.
4:06 That's a bit disappointing, considering that it's possible to stack mattes using Set matte effect. Aside from that, it's a very welcome update, using track mattes in layers panel was very cumbersome!
I've always preferred using Set Matte of track mattes.
I just learned so much in 7 minutes, thank you! Now how much will I retain... lol
Just need to put that new knowledge to use! Make something fun with as many mattes as you can manage! 😀
You made Matt into Matte. I do that with Assets I turn those into Asshats. It makes creating Asshats so much more satisfying.
My "Salads" folder agrees with you.
Bro you are superman, thank you
Can I use 2 track mattes on 1 layer in the same comp? 1 tracking matte is for movement, and the other is for something else.
Thanks for the video, I think if you can zoom out a little bit so we can see your upper body and your hand's movement will be comfortable for the eyes.
So true! aNd thats called a medium close up 👌
If you'd like to provide me with a slightly larger office, I'll be happy to oblige! 😉
I am trying to do exactly this but with an .mp4 layer instead of a photo layer.... I am doing everything exactly as you did and nothing happens. The video does not stay within the rectangle I have matted on it. (I need to zoom the video within the rectangle). Thoughts?
Wow, amazing upgrade, however it's made a large amount of all the old youtube videos boarderline redundant lol.
Hi, I greenscreened a character and followed the steps shown in your tutorial but for some reason, it does nothing. For example, I want to fill the moving character with a simple gray rectangle and when I hit the drop down to choose the avi. file, nothing changes; the rectangle just covers the whole video with the character in it. Any suggestions?
@@kuunami I appreciate the response, good sir, but I long figured it out. Thank you all the same.
3d how do i do it?
at last - one matte for multiple layers! So adobe do listen to us haha
They do!
Great video! I've got problem (in 2023 ae): when I select source layer in the track matte panel, main layer disappears in the preview. It shows up again when the source layer is over. So, when I try to have 'mask effect' on some layer it all disappears. 🤔 Any advice? It might be some basic stuff I just missed out...
I figured it out :)
Glad you got it sorted!
Hey! I just have a quick question. I´m using the new Beta of AE an whatever I googled, I couldn´t find a solution to my problem. So basically the whole "Track Matte" selection in the editing timeline is gone. Where can I find or active it?
It's possible to customize which columns are visible in the timeline, so you likely just have it hidden. Right-click somewhere in the little name row above the visible columns - where it says Layer Name, Parent & Link, etc. From the flyout menu that appears, choose the columns you'd like to see. Modes is what you're after in this case.
So many 'wait, what!?'s in this video!
Are there 3d mattes or 3dmasks?
i used to use "set matte" for this purposes is kind of the same right?
This definitely replaces many of the uses of Set Matte, though it still comes in handy for specific things.
I guess this will make any current project files incompatible with any previous versions?
Thats a good question, now its like rubicon
Yes, backwards compatibility unfortunately wasn't possible with this change. You can always Save As and choose previous version formats, though, if you haven't used this particular feature.
So how do I use a black and white image as an alpha mask now???? Used to do this all the time but they done broke it. Thanks Adobe.
I am having the same issue right now. That was my work flow and have you found any work around. This tut was good if you're using traingles.
I'm a bit confused between this new "feature" and the old "set matte" effect.....
This new functionality should replace many of the needs for Set Matte (but not all!). One of the great (and admittedly daunting) things about After Effects is that there are about 3 equally-valid approaches to making a lot of things. 😉
It took them only 25 years to finally do this
the second half is confusing
I have Adobe 2021 and there is no parent thing in track matte
CYA LATER SET MATTE
So it basically does what the set matte effect does.
Kinda! But in a more intuitive way, and without requiring layers to all share the same dimensions (or be precomped to accomplish that).
Soon: After Effects switches to nodes
all good and welcome. Still waiting for a real 3d interface and not this strange 2.5D left over tech from 2005...i mean AE should have at the very least a rudimentary 3d interface like Blender. They cant figure out how to combine a 3d interface with a grid with 2d graphics? they are just planes in space already. I guess Unreal engine will get this job done.
That's a totally different conversation, but if you haven't checked out the 3D features lately, it might be worth looking into, as they've made several recent enhancements. Also worth mentioning that ... After Effects is not a 3D program, so we probably shouldn't necessarily expect it to work exactly like one! 😉
@@schoolofmotion I hear ya - just gripes..LOL but I was thinking AE could be more like Nuke and Fusion with a workplane grid .
So basically, I'm f***ed.
Oh WOW... Adobe has finally given us a really stripped down, basic version of what software with nodal workflows has been able to do for years. What a pathetic company
