I was in my 20s and in college when i first got ffxi in 2004 and so I wasn't able to devote as much time to party groups as I would have liked and so I worked a lot solo on my Beastmaster ; i clearly remember the moment I hit 75, it was hard earned and well deserved.

Playing BST a fair bit in XI made for a lot of interesting soloing experiences. Leveling the job lead to so much exploring, going to far flung areas of the map to find areas to grind XP that had a decent collection of monsters to charm as pets as well as no other parties there that would inevitably complain about there being a BST nearby. It gave an opportunity to see parts of Vana'diel that I doubt I'd ever have visited otherwise. =)

I idolized Avesta back in the old days. Was always challenging myself to see what I could solo on my RDM. Miser Murphy at lvl 59, Bloodtear Baldurf at lvl 66, Ose, Charby etc etc. Avesta was an absolute beast. In retrospect I wasted a lot of time refusing help so I could spend 2+ hours soloing stuff that could have been knocked out easily with a group. But I had so much fun doing it. Was always great when I could draw a crowd which would dissipate rather quickly when people realized the fight was going to take over an hour.

My buddy and I used to duo so much stuff that took most people a party to do when the cap was 75. When they added DNC, we would Nin/dnc and thf/nin duo everything. So long as it didn’t use a ton of magic, we could usually take it. Loved hunting nms and stuff together.

Being a BST main, it was always nice to know that if I couldn't find a party for something I could always give it a shot solo. Soloing was so relaxing to me that I lvled bst on two separate characters, once pre-AoAU and the other Pre-Abyssea.

I remember soloing with my Dragoon, cause nobody wanted one in groups at the time.
I would go half White mage, anytime I needed a heal I'd cast Dia on the mob which would cause my dragon pet use healing breath.
The best was when I'd team up with other DRG/WHM we could fight for hours with no downtime.

    What was annoying soloing:
BST soloing a camp for 5+ hours.
Random group or LS static exp group, comes from Jeuno/Whitegate/Adoulin.
    Party: Hey could you leave?
BST: I've been hear for 5 hours, how about you guys camp 4 ft to the left?
Party: Fuck you, will camp on top of you, and our BRD will sleep hold the mobs.

I remember back in the days of Lv. 75 cap I soloed the Promathia Mission 6-2 fight against the three Spheroid NMs in Misareaux Coast as a DRK 65. I had trained up my Adventuring Fellow to about Lv. 55 in healer role specifically to attempt soloing tasks when I couldn't find help. The NMs being arcana, I was able to solo all three at the same time with slight help from my Adventuring Fellow. What really elevated this from a simple fight to an achievement for me was being able to assist and carry other players who were Lv. 75 and not able to solo the fight themselves while still being DRK 65.

Hello! I took forever to almost fully solo (through mobs and quests, etc.) THF from 72-74 or so. Also, this was the time when you could summon that one NPC to party with you. I can't remember the name! It was once per day. This was around 2005-2006 ish.

Hey, just out of curiosity, while mentioning the differences in jobs, did you ever discuss the topic of .... well.... in FF14, now that the cross role system has been removed, you can practically just level 1 job and you'll be good. MAYBE a different one for a different role, or a few similar jobs from the same role, if you want to be flexible, BUT there is no requirement. FF11 motivated you to level all sort of jobs!
-Want teleportation? White Mage has the spells! Level it!
-Want to warp back to your home point? Level Black Mage!
-You don't want to spend so much on Silent Oils and Prism powders? Better level WHM or RDM to get Invisible and Sneak
-You want a better droprate.... You got to level Thief!
As much as FF11 was about playing in a party, there was a lot of situations where you were on your own, and wanted to be able to do stuff by yourself, which often required the leveling of different jobs. Nowadays jobs, while having specific roles and tasks, those most show up in dungeon runs or raids. While there might be some soloing to be done with some quests, it is always possible to do it with any job. You are never forced to level a specific job to perform a specific task. That overall is a positive thing, but I admit that I do sometimes miss that feeling of sucking at something, and then getting the message that if I get this job, things will instantly get easier and better for me. It's great to not have to think about stuff, but that positive emotion had it's upsides.

After a few friends quit and left me their accounts I used to use one of them to "duo" NMs all the time. Got my sirocco kukri dual boxing my thief and my friend's red mage...that was absolutely insane.
Later though my favorite solo job was actually paladin with a scholar sub; combined with an activated primate staff+1 that combo was an MP battery: auto-refresh combined with Spirit Taker, sublimation, light arts cures and dark arts aspir/drains...

  • @gutspraygore

Yep. Former BST main here. Would do it again. Very relaxing.
A couple of things that I found ironic when I partied on my RDM and THF was that I always had to keep my THF highly equipped or else people complained, but didn't have to care so much about RDM gear. If anyone complained then they basically would lose their healer... so no one complained. To be fair, I always subbed WHM when partying (or whatever else could be useful depending on the mission). I wasn't a jerk about it.
But yeah, BST was my passion and the community of other BSTs that I ran into were always competent and careful fellows that loved to explore and I always knew I could trust to not accidentally walk into trouble, or if they did, they could handle it. I really liked that about people that leveled the job. Another irony was that partying with other BSTs was always great, but rarely something we deliberately tried to do. I think the idea you can log out whenever you feel like without consequence or responsibility was pretty appealing.
Jeez, just hearing myself say that reminds me of what I liked about the game. If I keep watching more of these videos I might even rejoin...
On another note, I never leveled SMN, but I'd bet a SMN party would be pretty awesome when I think about it.

      @hiflyer000 5 років тому

I was a BST main and loved the job so much. I really only had 1 or 2 days a week I could play for more than an hour so solo BST (then later BLM, BLU, and SAM) fit me very well. I could just log on, immediately get some exp, then go about my day.
I did team up with other BST from time to time, and it was nice that when one of us had to leave the other could just keep on trucking. I eventually found a full time duo partner in Cape Terrigan, where we finished the trip to 75 together, then duoed on alts 1-75. It was definitely the best time I ever had on FFXI.
I joined Eden about 2 weeks ago and was thinking of quitting due to time constraints (they really, really stay true to pre-99 leveling, like really), but I think I will stick it out until I can unlock BST and do the journey one more time.

When BLU solo though... It usually just BURN AND LIVE! OR SLIP UP AND DIE!
When hearing about how a THF/NIN soloed Behemoth, it was amazing. Or a summoner soloing as impressive as well. Then there was RDM.. I didn't get much rise when hearing RDM soloing.. It was almost a given lol.

I had so many opportunities to party, but I'd rather spend some time with my Automaton, tweaking it so I could get the best results on soloing efficiently. Had a blast. Today with Trust, I don't think it's a bad addition to the game, it's a great opportunity for me to try jobs that I'd never tried because they couldn't solo as fast as my PUP (like BRD and COR for example).

  • @Jraice
    @Jraice 5 років тому

I loved soloing on my drg and still miss it terribly. Ff 14 drg is just not the same. Honestly, I don't think soloing is dead...there's just no incentive to do it anymore. For example: BLU was recently added to 14, but it only has the masked carnivale and once you do that there's no drive to play it much.
The biggest issue imo that 14 has towards soloing is the lack of diversity in the jobs (and again, no incentive to solo anything). Yes, each job has different abilities but they all generally accomplish the same goals. You can't customize the playstyle like you could in xi. They've made it so streamlined and accessible to everyone there's minimal difficulty in learning anything. The subjob system made xi what it was; getting access to different skills/traits/abilities just by changing a sub class was great!
Also: I'm still annoyed they took support classes out and redid them as dps.

Idk, but I feel like you got some major nostalgia glasses on here. Soloing in old school FFXI was certainly possible and could be fun and relaxing for sure, but it was often largely ineffective and unproductive. For most casual players, many jobs were basically barred from soloing due to how they functioned, which really wasn't cool. These days, trusts add a whole new element to soloing that wasn't there before while also allowing literally any job to be able to solo stuff. However, just because something like Haste is universally available now to everyone through trusts doesn't mean jobs don't have their own specialties within soloing with their trusts. A job like Brd in particular now can really excel from having trusts as they can buff up their trusts with specific songs. Meanwhile Rdm can Haste/Refresh their trusts, Thfs can utilize SA/TA through their trusts, etc. Each job has unique tactics they can utilize with their trusts, which I find pretty neat. Trusts basically allow all jobs to utilize their STRENGTHS and be allowed to "solo" content; no one is gated out.
I would also say trusts don't really trivialize soloing either, as players are just aiming higher when seeking solo challenges, and some are doing pretty incredible things solo with their trusts. A couple Rdms recently have soloed Warder of Courage! Ultimately, trusts allow for so much more solo potential in my eyes, and if you truly want to just hit stuff without Trusts ala pre-Trust era, there's nothing stopping you.

Essentially why I stopped caring about MMO's. I was in that time that I (we) call the sweet-spot, (but let's face it, the "next generation" will call THIER online gaming experiences, the "sweet-spot", and so on).
I stopped FFXI before Trusts were introduced, so if I ever went back, I'd have a bit of work cut out for me... but I won't as there are more vital aspects of the game, missing, personally for me. But indeed... for nostalgia sake, I view FFXI videos... reluctantly, sometimes "new" ones, to see what's up with the game.
I see all these "solo guides" for obtaining legendaries, mythics, etc. and it feels like FFXI has become a "bottle ship"... well no, it (and other MMO's) always were bottle ships; You invest a crap-ton of time assembling it and you can appreciate it, as well feel accomplished, when you're done, but at one time, the pieces for assembling it were _hard to come by;_ SPECIAL, yet today, they are all included in the package and it has become more of a case of _"lolol, y u no mythic?"_ from a time where it was like _"holy crap! how long did THAT take you?!?!"._
People who know _'bottle ships'_ will nod and say _"Well, that's nice"_ and forget all about it the next day.
I could log back on today, then spend the next couple of weeks/months, doing the one same thing... alone... to obtain something I once dreamed of having, only to realize it no longer held that same value, nor ever will.
I completely agree with the video. I used to be a meeeean PLD/RDM, doing what I could to specialize in that combination. Just being able to solo something difficult was so rewarding.... of course, then you'd see people soloing much harder stuff on broken NIN/DNC _(lol u hit me for 500?! I heal myself for 9999 per second 'n erase all debuff instantly! lolutsusemi, lolutsusemi!)_ or pretty much anything /NIN, but hey, it was rewarding never the less.
I never want to go back (nor those pre-abyssea servers), because I know I will never get the FFXI that resides in my heart, back.

I never liked forced grouping because I only like playing MMOs with friends I already have rather than bothering random people in the game. And my friends don't always have time. So I'm definitely a person who's happy about newer MMOs allowing you to solo non-dungeon content from the get-go and older MMOs like FFXI and WoW being updated to allow for that.

I actually feel differently about the 'solo' aspect of FF14. It's actually..weird. Where as you're kind of always alone, you are forced to play with others to accomplish most things: dungeons, raids, palace of the dead, even fates. There's no true viable way to solo level a job in FF14 and I personally miss that. Blue Mage is gonna change that, but that's only one class.

The best way to level in FF14 is either deep dungeon or regular dungeons. Sure you and do battle leves and fates but it'll take an awfully long time and even with fates its better to have more than just you. It's not the same as goblin pets and stuff.
