Tucker what the helmet review says to me is that its time for you to start designing and marketing Paramotor Gear with your Trademark stamp of approval. You fly all the time and you know what what works and what most likely will appeal to most people entering the hobby / sport of paramotoring. I think the cons that you mentioned are extremely credible and make a ton of sense. If I were in the market for a paramotor helmet I would not waste $1300 on this helmet. People should check out the "Craniums" helmets used on the Flight Deck in the U.S. Navy. Those things are awesome and can be found in Army Navy surplus stores for next to nothing. They have everything this helmet has!!!
Thanks for being honest and believable! Dont risk your reputation reviewing someone else's money making venture. Aviator PPG is a cool group of people but this helmet and its cost is a frightening sign of the direction they appear to be going in. In my humble opinion.

I'm a big fan of having a flip-visor on my helmet. Helps keep my eyes from drying out and keeps the random bug from hitting me in the eye. Goggles do an OK job of filling the gap but a little paranoid after a friend of mine had his come off in flight, hit the tip of his prop and shoot a shard through his wing. So for a premium helmet, I think an attached visor would be a nice addition.

If you fly from local airports I understand the need for communication (pre-flight) with tower for flight plan clearance etc..
But realistically how many ppg pilots are monitoring aviation coms via headset during their flight?
Would those coms even be audible in-flight with a 2 stroke screaming on your back? Seems a handheld nav/com radio, or even a phn call to tower before your flight would be sufficient.

For ultralights, I use a David Clark K10 helmet and H10 13.4 Headset into a Sportys PJ2+ Radio via Sigtronics Transcom III (optional for instruction), plus a Cardo BT intercom. It sounds complex but it's not much different to this helmet. Downside: Added up, it's not much cheaper either.

My concern with this helmet besides the price is its ability to protect your noggin. Those vents are massive which is great for keeping you cool but are probably better at catching a prop strike. I would be curious to see if NVolo plans on selling this style in Europe because I'm not sure if this helmet will pass the EN966 certification with that much surface area removed.

  • @johanhemberg3620

The only benefit I can see with that helmet is that it is straight forward to connect airband, 2 meter radio and phone to it with separate PPT buttons. But I would never buy it. Having a bulky helmet and wires to the radios is something that gets annoying pretty fast. And there is no need for it any more. The Sena 20S can handle more than one bluetooth connection simultaneously. I use airband as master, phone as secondary device. It would be possible to setup the sena to have airband as master, 2 meter radio as secondary and phone as third, but only as mp3 player in that case.
A haven chosen a different path, I use the sena 20S as many others do but I don't use the sena 20S speakers, instead I use molded in ear earphones, and on top of that the best peltor ear-cups available (still very cheap). The molded in ear earphones removes a lot of noise, fits perfectly without being uncomfortable, does not fall out from the ear and provide great audio quality. Lovely for playing music. But most of the noise is removed by having the peltor cups of course. On cruise the noise is so low that I have to lower volume to hear the motor properly. Reducing noise and having great audio for playing music adds a lot the the experience of flying.

Another new flight idea is the April 17th daytime launch (4:46pm) of an international space station resupply rocket from NASA Wallops facility, near Temperanceville VA (about 4 hour drive from your area in NJ). Apparently the launch will be visible in our (PA/NJ) area 150 seconds after liftoff. You don't need to be close to watch & film it, and there will be flight restrictions relatively close. Perhaps you can get in the air within 50 miles and get some great footage.

one con that wasn’t mentioned, if this nvolo helmet is anything like mine, it’s one-size-fits-all .. and you change the liners to change the size of it. it makes for an ill-fitting helmet that tends to flip around. i prefer ski helmets that have a ratchet behind your head. They also shouldn’t be promoting “2 meter” since i know of exactly 0 pilots that have a HAM radio license. most pilots use ham radios illegally.

    • @parajerry
      @parajerry 2 роки тому

  • @FrayAdjacentTX

If it were about half as much, I'd be tempted. I had the same misgivings about the huge vents. I'm in Texas, so they would be GREAT in the summer, but flying in any cooler weather might lead to a very cold noggin. I'd love some way to cover them up. My current homebuilt helmet has vents, but they're narrow enough that little pieces of electrical tape can cover them up. I cover 'em in the winter and remove the tape in the summer.
I'd love if Aviator would make the bits modular. I'd love to get just a pair of the headphones with the 2M radio and output connections... or the 2M radio connection, BlueTooth device and output connections.
Lots of possibilities for options that would fit the variety of needs of differing paramotor pilots.

  • @plus790
    @plus790 5 років тому

Coming more from the motorcycling world, there were a few things that immediately jumped out at me. 1) The vents. Tucker later addressed this, but my very first thought was that they would be outstanding in summer, but not being able to close them could make this helmet essentially unusable in cooler weather or higher altitudes. Perhaps they could make a clip on cover to block them off. 2) The helmet isn't cheap but it's also not out of line, given the full features and the cost of comparable high end motorcycle helmets these days. If it works great and lasts, $1300 is less than you're going to spend on smart phones over the next 5 years. 3) I may be wrong, but in the closeups the ear cups looked like fake carbon fiber. Big pet peeve of mine. There's nothing wrong with plastic, but to borrow a line from Joe Dirt: "Don't try to church it up, son." 4) And finally, the last (and relatively minor) thing. Large logos. If I am spending a bunch of money on a beautiful, glossy carbon fiber lid, I don't expect my head to be your billboard. Give people a couple big stickers in the box if you want, but keep the logo small, subtle, and classy.

The fact that the XXL fits you nicely means they will never even think of making a model which fits me at all ;-) Also, if radio waves really do cause cancer...
heh.. seems pretty slick, and I don't think it's that absurd of a price point.. carbon fiber is expensive and labor intensive and requires a skilled tech to do it right.. and I suspect the benefits will more than pay off over enough time with the reduced weight.. so long as your not prone to taking a header ;-)
I wonder if you can replace the interior padding.. one crash one helmet is smart, but with a shell that sturdy, you could get away with replacing the padding instead of the whole helmet, and it would definitely be worth the effort.

There the main objective is to gather with likeminded nutfucks who went to the army (compulsory) and talk about the experience for the rest of your life till you die. Paramotoring and paragliding is not a hobby in Finland, it's a way to try and impress other people by acting like you have a very unique, half secretive skill that no-one else has and what scares them the most is if this sport would become popular. I was in the Army as a Bradley mechanic. So I was always issued what is called a CVC or Combat Vehicle Crew helmet. The Helmet came with a Kevlar shell on top. A padded liner. And of course ear cups and a boom mic. The older version when I first came in still had the padded foam ear cups and they were complete trash. They ripped easily and inside a tank there are plenty of things that can snag and rip them. Later came the jell ear cups but again the rubber outer part was kinda weak and easier tore revealing a very sticky jell material. But that was eventually fixed and they ended up with the one I currently have. I still have my CVC from Iraq as the unit that I was attached to gave it to me as a gift for helping them out for 8 months in Iraq. The one I have had the latest and greatest upgrades for the Iraq war time frame. But knowing the Army the radio and intercoms parts have probably been upgraded and the shells have possibly been upgraded since I left the service. The CVC is still in great condition and it makes a awesome piece of memorabilia from my time over there.
But what I wonder is did the military develop the jell ear cups and the civilians copied it. Or vice versa? Hmmmmm

Great review, I fly using the Sena Tufftalk headset, it has all the features of this headset and more. It’s much cheaper and fully integrated with no protrusions.

Just ordered a new Risky Biscuits T. I have the previous hoodie which I absolutely love. SO SOFT! But summers coming and will have many more chances to wear the T-Shirt over the Hoodie. In regards to the Helmet. Yeah, I saw Aviator's video on it and new with all the radio gear it would not be cheap. Great for students and instructors. You get what you pay for and in this, I believe it's probably worth the $. ;O)

You should fly with the radio connections attached... Looks like the downward facing placement might cause problems.
Air vents might make this a summer only helmet!
Postcard entries?! Pretty lame that the sweepstakes company won't accept email or online entries.
    Oh well, maybe I'll buy a T-shirt.

Nice review Tucker.. I have one question though I noticed in the side of the helmet it has two tabs that say visor on it and my question is does it come with a visor or is the visor extra?

    • @TuckerGott

Thanks! It does not come with a visor and I haven't seen one for sale through Aviator. I would assume you can get one through Nvolo and attach it to the mounts.

Carbon motorcycle helmets aren't uncommon around that price point. Considering this helmet comes with premium coms integration, audio out, and the included Bluetooth module, the price point is somewhat justified when comparing to moto helmets. That said I do think it's a little overpriced and the vent setup as you mentioned isn't ideal for an XC pilot. The price point would be more justified if the helmet had a more flexible venting system that could be open or closed like many moto helmets, the ability to use a user-chosen Bluetooth module (ie. sena), and less bulky ear cups (if the coms system allows). As I'm currently not a pilot, but saving up for training and gear, I'm just keyboard warrior-ing for now, but coming from the moto world I paid $600 just for my helmet (ECE rated, flip down sun visor, composite but non-carbon, no built-in coms). Having tried a carbon moto helmet though the weight savings in terms of neck strain was noticeable after a couple hours. Though the effect is much greater on a bike given much the higher speeds. In total it was just over $1400 total for all my riding gear including a Sena. And that's for a bike that only cost $4000, and going fairly cheap on everything but the helmet. In the moto world the saying goes "How much is your head worth", though being new to paramotors I'm not sure how well that translates or what safety/impact rating these helmets go through etc. Seems like a good start though if they make a few tweaks and get price point a bit lower.

i spent 700 for my carbon fiber motorcycle helmet and another 400 for the bluetooth radio that goes inside. So 1350 isn't that bad of a price to me. after a couple years of sales the price will drop once the R&D has paid for itself.

Audio is quieter than you normally are but quality seems good. Whether it's $1300 good, no it's no better than what you normally have. I don't know what you have invested in your present setup, but I'd say the $1300 wouldn't buy you a thing more than you have. Strictly a premium product for those who must own the top of the top.

I agree with the action cam mount comments. Who is going to want to mess up all that carbon fiber when they could have integrated a bracket.
Can you wear a head cover of some kind in colder weather? Not talking about that giant brown thing you wear all the time, but a thinner one that goes down to cover your face and neck.
The ear covers don't need to be that thick. wide, yes, to cover the ears, but there are low profile speakers that could free up some space. They don't look too modern.
How many lawyers does it take to create an Offical Rules document? LOL

  • @MitchG

Making it out of Carbon was a bad idea. RF signals and the bluetooth will not pass through carbon fiber which will make the bluetooth signal much weaker. Then they mounted it on the back which makes the problem even worse since most people have their phones in front of them in a pocket. The price is insulting. I would be ashamed to rip people off that much by selling something that probably cost 200 bucks in material to make. For that price it should include an airband radio with it and a visor for eye protection. You can buy a helicopter helmet that comes with a clear and smoke visor and the comm harness to connect to a radio for less than this.
