I did this on my 93 xj and it’s amazing. I went with ZJ rear disc brake hoses, as the KJ ones didn’t seem like they would connect to My hard lines. I also got the e brake cables from Crown, who makes a disc brake kit. They only fit 95 and older XJ , but are drop in fit and work perfectly with the KJ parking brake. One related mod I did and recommend for 91-94 XJs: I got the brake booster for 95-96 XJ. It’s a dual diaphragm, drop in fit for 91-94, and added to brake power as well. This mod can be done with 90 and older , but the brake pedal pin needs slight mod. I also upgraded to the newer style brake master cylinder, with plastic reservoir - a bit shorter & lighter , and you can see the fluid level at a glance.
I did the exact same change on my '92 XJ with the '95 Brake Booster and the ZJ rear disc backing plates for an 8.25" axle (did have to hone out the center of the backing plates just a touch). my brother happens to have an '95 XJ and has driven both since I did hte conversion, and he's a bit jealous since mine now brakes better than his! It really isn't too difficult to do, just take your time and bleed the system very thoroughly. I'd recommend a pressure bleeding kit (not vacuum bleed) such as the one from Motive Power Products since it fills the reservoir from the top automatically with fresh fluid as you bleed at the cylinder and makes completely flushing the system easy.
I have a tip, if you do break the center pin bolt its easy to get out, it happened to me on an FJ40 years ago, just take a ball peen hammer and another hammer, and drive out the center pin, in other words you will sheer the pin. Just be careful and wear eye protection.
Hi Ronnie, when you say "if I brake an axle on the 8 /1/4, it's not going to fall out. What is it with the new disc brakes that the axle won't fall out?
Ronnie, As a Subscriber, I bought a NEW condition 1999 XJ of a 90 yrs old man that NEVER left pavement. My question is; @ 190k miles & runs perfect. How long can I expect the fuel pump to last? ( I'm the guy that likes replacing parts BEFORE I'm stranded along the road. Thanks!
