    I love how you said "creep" and then I asked myself what creep was, and at that moment you asked the same question and explain. Awesome!

    I just found out about this video this dawn. I tried to watch videos related to my thesis, but in this video, I woke up; kuddos to you sir, I laughed at the sudden outbursts of your sense of humor, here I enjoyed learning.

    Dr. Tyler Ley, you are doing a great job, learnt many things from your lectures. My question is "why different countries use different concrete mix design methods?" Is it possible to have a unified/universal concrete mix design, applicable in all countries, in all conditions?

    I've just discovered that you can not only add colour to concrete (oxides) but glitter too, just before you seal it, both available from a company called 'Hemway'. I loved concrete before, but now it sparkles, I'm obsessed.

    Working my way through all your videos and enjoying all of them.
    Do you have any information on incorporating clay into the mix? I am creating a large thermal mass for underfloor heating and want to use the excavated material within the concrete mix. It is made up of sandstone and clay so I am happy using the sandstone but not sure about clay. The technical department at the cement manufacturer just give standard "do what you want, we take no responsibility" statements.

    What about cementitious material contained in the fine (man sand) and or course aggregates? I find this inconsistent absorption factor destroying my target water. Please do a video on this. Thank you and love your work :)

    Ok.. if I am using a general build type, such as 1:2:4 and want to add fibers and water reducer, for use in forms for walls, how much fibers, how much reducer, and how much can I reduce the water yet get flow? Area is using hand mix or small mixers, sand, and 94 lb bags of cement... so need to figure it out..lol...

    I do not speak English very well, but with the subtitles I can understand everything, I have not found in Spanish a video like that, fantastic.
    I would like to ask you a question, I am interested in looking for more information the method of fineness module of the combination of aggregates or optimal fineness module, through tests this method gives more workable concrete. Will not you have some biographies in English that you can recommend me about this?

    • @TylerLey
      @TylerLey  6 років тому

      Thank you Luis! I have been talking with some people to translate some of my videos to Spanish. If you have any recommendations that would be great.
      Fineness modulus is a very old concept (1918 I believe!). I would recommend using the Tarantula Curve to optimize concrete mixtures. You can find more info at www.tarantulacurve.com and ua-cam.com/video/V-r4-9OcuyY/v-deo.html
      Let me know if you have anymore questions.

    Hi Tyler, love your videos, i work in the building trade and have found your videos very good for understanding the materials i work with on a daily basis. But i have a question involving fly ash, i recently came to learn that fly ash is added as a partial cement replacement to make use of the excess calcium hydroxide produced in the mix, i am interested to know the reason why calcium hydroxide is not added so that more fly ash can be included in the mix. the reason i am asking is because i imagine this would make a nice creamy mix with all the extra binders included plus get rid of more of this waste material i.e fly ash?
    hope this makes sense and any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated and keep up the great videos 👍

    100% air does not make finishing easier. In fact finishing concrete with high air is terrible. It just tears as you try to seal it up. The only way is to saturate the top...which is not good for the durability. I’m no engineer here just a concrete finisher that’s seen a lot of mix designs made in an office. Love the video by the way. Very informative.

    Thanks for the video. Great stuff. I've a question. How would you go about designing a concrete mix that can withstand heating (upto 500 degree Celsius) and cooling cycles on a daily basis without failing under load?

    A Doc, your a concrete lover... as am I... An idea for a video for you, fiber vs metal fiber and the disadvantages of metal fibers as points of rust and expansion in those metals... as they cause ''failure"...
    Especially, in salt and freeze thaw cycle areas... I am just sharing, as I know we need ideas as UA-cam creators.
    (As I am stuck on stupid with the FIU Bridge collapse -- it is owning me right now... )

    • @TylerLey
      @TylerLey  6 років тому +2

      I agree that a fiber video would be good. I will start gathering some material.

    • @ForensicCats
      @ForensicCats 6 років тому

      Compression testing would be awesome data... if, you can source some... looking forward to your findings... ty
      I did find a "block of ''cement'' video", with 7 lbs of fiber reinforcement... They just used a jack hammer... and added 7lbs of fiber (long or short, I do not know) and it resisted a significant amount... Of course, that was not a controlled test.

    • @TylerLey
      @TylerLey  6 років тому +1

      I will see what I can do. Steel fibers are becoming less popular and the stiff plastic fibers are becoming a lot more popular. I think a video would be a good idea.

    • @ForensicCats
      @ForensicCats 6 років тому +1

      Stiff plastic fibers, I am not up to speed on... would be enjoyable...
      Of course, knowing their drawbacks...
      Hmmm. I wonder how heat would deform them and cause "weakness" and same for freeze cycles... would they suffer from "plastic fatigue " (metal fatigue)...

    • @TylerLey
      @TylerLey  6 років тому +2

      Heat can melt them. This can be a good thing though as it allows the steam out of the concrete before it causes explosive spalling. The stiff plastic fibers seem to have good durability. I reached out to some friends and have some fibers coming in the mail. I will see if I can get some data with them for the video.

    Hi there
    I want to mak a diy concete kitchen coutertop in a melamine mold about 2 inch thick reinforced with rebar.
    Quickcete 5000 is a wery popular mix for this aplication.
    Unfortunatily where i live (in Romania) these kind o concrete mixes are not avalable.
    I did find two kinds of potland cement, one with intitial high strenght the other with high final strenght.
    Also i found a liquide aditive for concrete. The label sais it is used to encrease workability. reduce amount of water and make it water resistent, along with dosage.
    I found some proportions for the kind of concrete for a slab, pawement and structural beams or pillars.
    I need some help figuring out the corect recipe for my aplication.
    Thanx

    I am not an engineer but just curious are you guys still memorizing these things? Who does that in the era of automatic calculators that work together with databases and cloud services? I am guessing many engineers don't even bother to memorize these things and maybe simply use a specific software that easily calculates everything for you by taking all the inputs you provide and in return gives you a list of all the material and even the steps and procedures to be followed by even connecting to global services to find the lowest cost products in the current markets that helps you to prepare the best and most cost effective concrete you need. If that software doesn't exist yet what a pity for humanity and what a shame for all the brains wasting their energy in silicon valley. Please someone tell me that this kind of software exists..

    • @TylerLey

      Does not exist. Local practices and materials make this challenging.
