Most forms of "welding" involves a pinpoint heating area causing localized melting of the base metal and filler rod creating a fusion of both metal pieces. A full penetration weld is a weld that has fused the two pieces through out their thickness.
Your demonstration involves the welding rod melting into a heated base metal's pores. This is very similar to what happens with soldering metals, whether using tin/lead solder (soft low tensile strength) or silver solder (higher tensile strength). The aluminum rod you were using has a fairly high tensile strength, but you were not "fusing" metal such as happens with TIG welding.
