  • The year is 1988. George H.W. Bush has been elected the 41st president of the united states, The Cosby Show is the most viewed television show in the US, "Faith" by George Micheal is playing on repeat, and Die Hard is in theaters. This was the same time that this Oldsmobile Cutlass was driving off the showroom floor.
In this video, we take a step back to the past in order to truly appreciate the cars of today. We take a look at what made this car break domestic sales records, and why it is a true testament to how far cars have come in 34 years.

You laugh like crazy at the interiors of these vehicles, but go back another 10 years and you'll appreciate the engineering marvels that these actually were.

While packing to move into my first house I just found a picture of my brother who passed away last year and our mom leaning on our old light blue cutlass. I had a lot of good time’s in that car.. I really wish that the car phone it came with worked though. 😊

Sorry to hear about your brother, But happy to hear that the car brings good memories about him. It’s good to have things that remind us of the good times with people we’ve lost, cars are very powerful in this sense. Thanks for watching! -Dylan

Your 88 model year seems slightly more luxurious in the interior than my 94. Bigger motor, super cushy interior. Glad you’re enjoying this vehicle. My Aunt rented one of them in 1990. She liked it enough to buy a new one in 91.

This was my mom's car for most of my childhood. This is the car I got my driver's license in.
In the 80s we knew cigarettes were bad, but people still felt they had the right to smoke anywhere. That was the 60s and earlier when people said cigarettes were healthy.
Babies often sat in the front. Car seats for babies started becoming more popular in the early 80s. I never had one. I can remember sitting in the front seat on someone's lap.

Great job . As a child of the late 60s I enjoyed seeing your perspective on this car.

Seems little old church ladies bought these. Original owner of mine was a church secretary named Dorothy. She wrote a check in full and took the title with it home the same day.

I had bought new a 1988 Cutlass Ciera International Series Coupe. It was the top luxury/performance model of the Ciera. With the 3.8L I could easily do 0-60 in the low/mid 7secs, maybe there was different gearing in that trim. It handled great as well the the Olds FE3 suspension. Plus the engine was ULTRA reliable. I had given it to my dad, and he got nearly 300k miles before the trans died.
PS - This commercial shows the exact model (and color) I had. *wish the quality was better

I'm just coming across this video and I'm surprised I watched it all. The reason being is I was impressed how open minded the two of you are about an '88 Oldsmobile. I owned a '93 Buick Century which was built on the same platform and it was up until I purchased my '14 Impala, the best car I ever owned. My daughter was born in '94 and the Century was the family car for 8 years. Comfort, luxury and not bad looking affordably. Thanks for resurrecting good old memories. By the way, the 55 being highlighted in the dash was because the federal government enacted a national speed limit in order to save gasoline in the late '70's. Clinton repealed that in the '90's. Great video. Nice car. Good buy for a collector as these crazy '80's cars become desirable.

Great cars. Still driving my Dad’s last car, 94 3.1liter Ciera. 147K miles. Dad bought it used from an old church lady. She put 34K on it in 12 years. 30 years of age have caught up on the paint and interior. But a super solid vehicle. Run premium in it and stay 70mph or below and you’ll get high 20s mpg highway out of it.

Premium is completely pointless. They don't have very high compression ratios and have a knock sensor that keeps it on the edge of pinging all the time anyway. Undercoat it with lanolin based undercoating if you want it to last.

@@gregorymalchuk272 Was about to say, a 3100 does NOT need premium haha. I used to dispose of old 2 stroke fuel in my 3100 grand am (rust took its toll sadly...). This is just part of the whole "premium is cleaner/more efficient" myth, which has died down over the years. Any difference would be negated by the price of premium, anyhow.
If that's a 4 speed, the mileage leaves some to be desired. My 94 Taurus 3.0L gets about 32-33 mpg on extended, relaxed highway drives, though usually I average 19-24 mpg. Haven't calculated my Ciera millage yet, 3 speed 3.3L...

I can hear the motor in your Oldsmobile and it's Out Of Tune probably the fuel injectors Rock the most days they didn't use a standard computer they had something called the chip you could change it out and the chip would give you more performance more performance these were very fast cars if you knew how to do the tune
