Don't think it's gonna crank? O ye of little faith! So cool-- haven't heard that banshee since I had a gig in the mid '80's driving a funky old '60's K100 that had been chopped & rigged up to a 24-foot reefer box, making dairy deliveries in Pennsylvania Dutch country (everything from a couple pallets' worth to big supermarkets, to a couple cartons to little mom & pop grocery stores) When I'd made the delivery, & went to start her up, I had to be a little tactful & try to time the thing just right so as to minimize the number of heart-attack victims, as half the time I was in a busy parking lot with poor old Grannies & Granpas out shopping in force-- wow, you should have seen folks jump out of their skins when that shriek let loose! Everybody in sight would stop dead, many clutching at their hearts, and stare at me open-mouthed, with eyes like saucers, like they'd heard the last trumpet blow! Cheers, & keep on truckin'!
I remember back in the '50s there was a couple of truck terminals a mile or so away from our neighborhood. During the summer, with all the windows opened, you could hear the trucks air-starting all night long. Pilot and Akers trucking I believe. Such a nostalgic sound.
Those old diesels ( Cummins , Caterpillar , Detroit , John Deer , Perkins etc ) can sit unused forever and they will almost always fire up . Amazing old engines .
@@chadanderson2623 220 Cummins was a 743. The only engine close tk that was the Thermodyne, which was 637 c.i., which had an IDI variant called the END-672.
my grandfather told me about air starters and he told me that the only way for a truck to have an air starter is that it has to hold air and that they were loud. he definitely wasnt wrong on the loud part
When I worked for ccx back in the early 90's they still had some trucks with air starters I always loved the way an air starter sounded just sounded heavy duty
Yes it was mine. It was purchased from a man in north Carolina. Used to be a Claremont Transfer truck. Still says Claremont on a side door. I had it for 27 yrs.
This is my truck, it is a 220 Cummins with a 13 speed. It was bought in northern Michigan from a small trucking company. The 220 cummins engine is for sale.
I remember when transit buses had air starters... that was the case with most of Tri-Met's buses, including their Flxible Metros and Gillig Phantoms. What Justin has here is one of the last of the H series COEs. Produced for almost six years, from 1961 to early 1966, it was a raised version of the C series medium-duty COE, using the same basic C series cab purpose-built for Ford by Budd. The H series were also Ford's first diesel-powered trucks, with the HD series using Cummins engines displacing either 672 or 743 CID (producing 195 and 220 HP, respectively). Gassers were also available, using one of three different Super Duty V-8 engines (401, 477 or 534 CID). In 1963, the engine availability for the HD line was shaken up as the existing 672 and 743 CID sixes were joined by a new line of 855 CID sixes, which was Cummins' bestselling Class 8 diesel engine with a long production run into the late 1990s. One other Cummins diesel was also new for the HD line that year: the V8-265 (VINE, also available in economy form as the V8E-235), for the 950-D series. Justin's example is an HT-950-D with a Cummins NH220 (220 hp, 743 CID) diesel engine. Ford then replaced the H-series for mid-year 1966 with the new W series, keeping all the diesel engines but canceling out the gas ones (leaving them for the heavier-duty F/T, C and N series); the W series had a long run up to 1977, before they in turn were replaced for '78 by the CL ("cab-over Louisville") line.
Junk? No way! My dad was an O/O and I grew up riding in and taught to drive in trucks like this. One was a 69 F model, V8 Mack 5sp. With many between, but later a 84 ext. Pete, 400BC Cummins, 15sp. OD.
As a young kid, we lived next to a trk stop cafe in Montana, nothing worst than a trker starting up his rig when you were outside or walking near it and that air went off! Scared the hell out of you! Hahahahahaha
My mate's pops has got two Ford's on their farm, think they might be a 71 and a 73, one's had an engine swap and a GVM upgrade. He uses both mainly as a fill truck for harvesting. Seem like decent machines, Sort of odd to see old cabovers like that. Folks, please at least wait until the oil pump has had a chance to get things going before you start revving a motor, 99% of engine wear occurs when a motor is cold.
I see a lot of negative comments about that lady calling it a piece of junk but I think she probably knew all along it was going to start ,she was just ribbing her mate. From 1973 to 1976 I worked in a diesel truck body shop as a young man. Ruan company had a fleet of Internationals with air starters and every time they would start up in the shop, if you weren't paying attention ,it would scare the bejesus out of you, you learn real quick to pay attention to who was climbing in the truck and if it was going to start inside the shop
We have air starters on our gillig Phantom coaches the great engineer we had said why is the fuel leaking out of the bottom of the starter I told him it's a lubricator he had no idea what I was talking about that's great Engineers for you
The sound of an air starter always reminds me of Mad Max starting the Mack R-Model in The Road Warrior

You will never get reliability like that in a truck today. It may look like shit, but it'll last pretty much forever.

@Ian Hotson School system clearly failed you, bud. What in the flying fuck was that grammar?
@Ian Hotson Again with the shitty grammar bud, you’re not helping your case at all lol.
this reminds me of maximum overdrive where that one truck has an air starter. That sound gives me the creeps because of that moview
that's exactly why I looked this up.
DiplexPolecat 60 yep wouldn't even known of an air starter if it wasn't for maximum overdrive.
DiplexPolecat 60 yep that is cool. I like to look at things that pepole call ''before its time''. And it surely was cool for its time.

How many watched this to HEAR an air starter for the first time in 40 years? Thanks for laughing at the precisely wrong time.
Yeah spoiled the moment
I don't see the problem... could still hear it clearly
I thought it was part of the air starter at first
It's probably been about 20 years since I last heard an air starter. Used to still see a few of these old relics in Arizona or Texas now & then.
so is the old truck for sale?
not to many of them "two story falcon's" around anymore. nice find
There never were a lot of them around.
Father in law had one. Single axle took wk off made it into twin screw. Memories
I can see why they call it a two story lol. Looks like they just put the old straight truck cab on stilts.
Falcons?
@John Heckler I know what the truck is. Just wondered where the name Falcon came into play
That’s the difference between guys and gals, women see a piece of junk, men see units
