    Inspirational! My wife and I are just starting a food forest in motueka where we get light to moderate frosts - would love to know what species of bananna you grow as we think we may be able to grow them here after watching this which is pretty exciting!

      Nice! Doing lots of variety and ‘growing technique’ trials, but so-far the most cold tolerant ones seem to be planted in the best-sheltered areas, and ones grown in banana circles (warm core keeps them growing through winter).
      Variety-wise, I’ve observed Goldfingers to be the most cold-tolerant, and heard similar things about Blue Java

    Love this man! Keep up the good work! I’ll be a syntropic agroforester in north Florida in a couple of years and I’ve got a buddy I’m south west Florida doing the same now, he’s just beginning to plant out his systems. Love to see it. I want to get this kind of stuff state subsidised, full organic, no pesticides, no artificial fertilisers, just diversified succession and massive biomass creation. Regenerative Agriculture let’s go!

      @@byron.in.new.zealand Fairly recently, having moved back to the family homestead there are a few old established fruit trees here already. The land is still, very supportive eg. mushrooms (currently on the lawn), wild herbs, berries, grapefruit & other fruit when in season. It is great to be back having day dreamed of self sufficiency and other projects for several years now while away

    Great video. Really interesting seeing the different systems you have going. It must be amazing having the space to try so many different combinations. Mine is a backyard only system. ;)

    Good Work. Just found your Channel & now subbed. Can I say though, all your choices of plant variety are brilliant with exception of the Eucalypts. Im in Australia, they are great out in Bushland but not good for food forests or Urban gardens only because as they grow, they become very unstable dropping large limbs and are very messy trees causing all sorts of damageand add to that nothing much will grow under them, something to do with the Eucalyptus oils i believe and thier need for nutrient & moisture sucking the goodness out of the surrounding soils. Maybe look for other flowering Canopy trees that are more stable. Just my opinion of course.

    • @byron.in.new.zealand
      @byron.in.new.zealand  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for watching and subscribing! So eucalyptus are actually very common practice in agroforestry - across the world. In Australia too. Difference is that they’re managed as high pollards, constantly pruning fresh growth and dropping it down to cover the soil as mulch. So no old branches to break, but utilising it to improve the soil conditions by adding organic matter. Check out the Agroforestry Academy channel for more info on this 🤙

    Great video brother! I love your plant species choices, i use many of the same in my systems, were in zone 9b and get a few frosts a year. I use mostly the blue java variety for my bananas which ones do you use?? Also ive had the same experience with cherimoya seed plants. Waaay heartier than the grafted varieties that we get from nurseries.

      Thanks mate! Lots of similar plant species, that's awesome. I'm trialling a few different banana varieties - Explained them in my recent video, just uploaded this evening! And same as cherimoya with similar, like the white sapote and Inga. Just happier plants grown from seed haha

    Hey Byron, I'm in the coromandel. I'm really interested in learning how to set up these kinds of food forests. Do you do workshops? Or do you know how I could learn how to do this? I know quite a few people with land who would be keen on having these syntropic food forests set up on their land. Would really love to get in contact with you.

      That’s awesome to hear Matt!
      We’re just about to release dates for upcoming Food Forest Design workshops happening around the BOP this Spring. Probably the best way of getting a big download of theory + practical skills & knowledge to set up & manage this kind of system. You can find me on Instagram @byron.in.new.zealand and @backyard.paradise.permaculture (FB too) We share lots of free content about this stuff there - That’s where the event details will be shared either today or tomorrow.
      Also welcome to email if you’re keen to share more info about your project!

    Distence between row to row? Thanks for the video.

  • @leah4498
    @leah4498 2 роки тому

    Everything I've read so far advises that syntropic agroforestry rows are planted north to south to ensure an even spread of light and growth. It looks like your avocado system is planted east to west. Is that just because of where the existing avocados were planted? Or is there another reason?

    • @byron.in.new.zealand
      @byron.in.new.zealand  Рік тому

      You're exactly onto it - rows are East / West because that's how the orchard was already laid out. I'd do it differently if up to me, but that's what it's like inheriting other people's decisions in a landscape haha
