Hi Andy........In Celestial Nav are we primarly referring to Magnetic or True ....headings or bearings? How is Celestial Nav impacted by navigating in higher Polar latidudes. Thanks for Assist Frank Welner
Z & Zn are taken as True. Convert to use with magnetic compass. The Nautical Almanac (official US/UK naval version) gives advice on limitations of use in high latitudes. Its worth paying for the real thing -- in the UK the NP 314 volume costs the same as 60 filter tip cigarettes or one bottle of whiskey. Far better value too.
Frank, Celestial is always calculated using True degrees, and all the publications are in True degrees. One must convert to Magnetic to use on our typical boats with a Magnetic compass. High Latitudes does present some special considerations, and the Almanac and other publications address these.
Hi, Thanks for such a practical run through this subject. I have looked at the "theory" in books but your explanations added a lot. I have one rather mundane question. Where can I get plotting sheets? - in particular the larger square sheets that you appear to use. I only see smaller rectangular ones.
Samuel, My go-to place for all things Celestial is www.celestaire.com. They carry pads of the Universal Plotting Sheets, as do most vendors who deal in celestial products. The mylar plotting sheets that I use on the Bermuda Race are made by a friend in the Portland Maine area. If you are interested in them I can put you in touch, but they are limited to that particular navigation area (he does not make them for other parts of the world).
Andy, what do you do if you pre-calculated your morning/evening stars before the trip and on the actual day your DR was off somewhat. Can you still use the original Hc and Zn from Volume 1 or do you've to start all over to get a new LHA of Aries?
It’s unlikely that the selected stars will change much if your DR is different by a few miles. They will be in about the same position in the sky for the entire voyage. But, it is a quick exercise to redo and make sure.
Andy are you planning to do an episode on sextant usage at the beach? And are you available for a private paid weekend instructional on sextant sight taking in the northeast?
Vadim, the Bermuda Race plotting sheets were designed by an experienced sailor/navigator and are made in Portland Maine. Let me know if you're interested in purchasing a set and I can assist.
Social Comment. Its been some time since you last posted and there's still some nasty ailments going about. I'm sure I am supported by the great number of people who have enjoyed your series in enquiring after your health and saying we hope to see you again soon with some other fascinating topic. Another example from a real race would suit me very well. An episode on time calculations would be well received I am sure.
Rathlin, Thanks for your concern! I am indeed alive and well, just having to deal with life for a while. With another Marion Bermuda race on schedule for June 2023 I plan on bringing some examples back from that experience. If I can get organized I will also pull together a special set of episodes around planning for the race, perhaps posting to Patreon as well.
@@thenavstation Thank You for the update. Enjoy your race (win again ??) and there will be a lot of us subscribers waiting to sample any new material you produce.
The race is run. We dod not know which vessel you were on so following on the YB tracker App did lack something for your 'students'. I hope you remain well. Hopefully you have found some time to create a lesson based on the race. Perhaps when ready you could post details of how your followers can access the Patreon you mentioned. Kindest regards from Ireland.
@@thenavstation And that is a straight line of sight to the geometric horizon (earth curve) or a refracted (curved) line of sight to the visible horizon?
One of the finest on hands sailing instructors on Celestial Navigation with many years of actual experience .
Thanks for this nice series. The best on celestial navigation on youtube …
Excellent presentation on plotting and running fix. Thank you.
Good to see another episode. Thanks for creating this.
a great help for me. the simplicity of its lessons makes it easy to understand
Well done! I’m a novice and you explained it very well, thankyou

Yes, I have that in my plans for later this summer. I would be available for lessons.
@@thenavstation Andy, I would be very interested in taking a few hours of hands-on sextant lesson. Is there a good way to connect with you?

Elevation angle measurements require a horizontal plane. How do you measure an elevation angle with a curved baseline (globe)?
The horizontal plane is the line of sight to the visible horizon.

@@tbrown3356 Just as he said. Take a course on the PRACTICE of navigation. There's no need to put too fine of a point on it.
@@boobylinks Does he believe there's an invisible horizon?
@@tbrown3356More visible than the existence of a Flat Earth map. 🤭
