First saw Leon on Saturday Night Live and he sang this song. This was when I became a fan.
I too (at 69) have started to carry a "walking stick" of my own. Partially in memory of this great man. R.I.P. Mr. Redbone. We will not see your like again
Me too! At age 71. ;-)
I'm a long-time fan. Funny story. I first heard this song in 1979 or 80 and fell in love with the sound of Leon Redbone. Here's the funny part. From listening to it (having never seen an album cover) I thought LB was probably an older black man. Anyway, he soon came to town and I bought tickets for the performance at the Carlton Dinner Theater in Bloomington. When I arrived early, I had a drink at the bar--empty except for this odd-looking man in hat and sunglasses. We chatted briefly. I told him I was excited because this would be my first time to see LB perform. He said he was looking forward to the show too and excused himself :-o Imagine my surprise when the curtain opened.
Awesome story. Sounds very Leon Redone like to not reveal to you that you were sitting right next to him having a chat.
That's a great story! Yup - that would be Leon Redbone's way to handle the situation!
Well, if there's a more perfect Leon Redbone story, I haven't heard it.
Nice. I miss old concerts.
Security guards & drunks is all you get now.
I found him via the first season of SNL then I went and picked up champagne Charlie and the one with the cartoon frog on it shine on harvest moon and ain't misbehaving are my favorites.
Got to see him once in Boulder, and he was really fun. At one point in the show, he took out a book of matches, lit one, threw it in the air and said, as he was putting them back in his pocket, "So much for excitement."
Something about that has really amused me, so thanks...
My favorite album by him
I actually went up to him after an outdoor show and asked when his fourth album was coming out (knowing he had been dropped by Warner Bros.) He replied in a drawl, "After I finish recording it.'
He then signed an autograph - which I still cherish.
You were truly blessed to have met the man. He was one of just a tiny handful of truly enigmatic, charismatic, and utterly mysterious men God ever put on this Planet. He brought Tin-Pan-Alley to a bunch of semi-jaded rockers... and SCHOOLED 'em. 🤣Schooled 'em GOOD.
And, for just the briefest of moments in American musical history, Mr Redbone hit that sumb!tch slam outta the park. Warner Bros couldn't press the records fast enough. The guys upstairs could not f*cking believe it- a guy in a Panama hat and sunglasses with a beat-up guitar and a cheap cigar and a Cuba Libre and a cheap linen jacket on a barstool was selling out concerts in an hour.🤣🤣
He still is my homie to this day. PS Jimmy Buffett LOVED Leon. He thought Mr Redbone was an absolute genius, and I would humbly concur. Rest in Peace, the both of ya. I can't wait to get to Heaven and hear those two knuckleheads JAM.
This album is one of the all time greats!
That plucking at 2:30 is genius. It's jazz and bluegrass in a blender topped with some Spanish salsa.
Yummy!!! Great description. 🥗
Leon Redbone has a style made just for me.
Leon was a national treasure to be sure. I will miss him and music just lost another note to its opus...shine on Leon.
Peace be you, Leon. One of a kind entertainer..you will be missed. 😢
How I miss this guy
My parents had a 78 rpm copy of "My Walking Stick" by I don't know who, Mills brothers? Love the Leon Redbone version, saw him perform in Vancouver about 1974.
this is on of my favorites, its right up there with Lazy Bones. --
Whenever he said bee bop bah doo da dah, I felt that.
My grandma would always play this on her stereo for me when I was little and I had forgotten about it until now, thanks so much for uploading this. :)
Rest sweetly, Leon, we miss you already.
Love this song
Thanks to you and your great backup group(s) for all your fine musical contributions.
Saw Leon in.. 2014 I think in the old rock house in St.Louis. great show
anything of leon's is my favorites!
lord tonight……unreal the class
Awesome rendition!
Truth, be told!!
I saw him in Boulder Colorado and in north carolina
WELL DONE
R.I.P. Leon
Saw him in the seventies in Vancouver. Leo Kotke was the warm up act so that was cool but Leon Redbone absolutely blew everyone there away with his brilliant guitar playing. Reminded me of Django. Can't say enough good things about the man. Thx for the post. 🎸💃👏
My Favorite since the Rolling Rock beer @ Mancini's in McKees Rocks,PA .....sitting round the table with you Jonathan Dorn and my departed Friend Tom"Turbo" Meyers
A Rock in the Rocks at Mancini's with Leon AND the great tuba player Jonathan Dorn???!!! You're one lucky Yinzer!
RIP.
I was told he would also do comedy on stage also is this true i wear my Panama jack hat and shades Everytime I leave the house
Not stand up, but yes he often made the audiences laugh with a little banter here and there between songs.
so fuckin fine
Fine like that single malt whiskey I'm a sippin right now (:
Freddie White does a great version of this.
RIP Mr Redbone. Thanks for all the wonderful music.
Sure wish we could see this performed on Saturday Night Live. THAT was my intro to Leon. :)
One of my regrets is NEVER getting to see Leon Redbone perform live. Just appearances with him alone just accompanying himself on guitar we're awesome from what I've been told. RIP Sir and Thank You for the music!
Not to rub it in but he was even more cool in person.
Missed but not forgotten!
Pure genius. This song inspired me to learn more jazz guitar styles
You know mr.leon....my ex hates your music. Well sir. Thats why shes an ex ....only envolve yourself with a woman with a soul...or at least good taste. Haha..you sir are the best.
That’s great, Mark. You laid it down.
Hahaha! Anyone that does not like Leon Redbone has no soul! Your right just leave them in your dust!🎉🎉🎉 leon will live forever!
And after 7 years I can still post this very same thing because I meant every word lol and still do!! Love ya mr.redbone ...the soul never dies
I loved this guy's style and music, really a throwback to simpler times and good music!
Saw him in 70's, 90's, and the 2010's, always a delight !!!
Saw him up at Prkers in Seattle....Too cool to decribe...never broke character...Needless to say I loved him, RIP
Nonsense. There wasn’t a character to break.
Rest in Peace.
J ai vu ce monsieur au havre en France dans les années 90. Super concert. Super bonhomme. On ne parlera pas de lui après...... par respect. Ca c est de la musique.👍
Redbones music is his spirit. I appreciate him. Leon thank you for your amazing soothing warm voice. You transcend the universe. I’m blessed to enjoy your very special you😊
Thanks for listening
This music is so amazing a person can’t help falling in love and tapping your foot to his mellow beat😄❤️👏
Love the songs. Wish I could shake his hand and thank him for his selfless spirit and transcending music and gift to the world 👏
Never pick up your feet. It's all a shuffle!
I love this song. I can't remember when I last heard it. Like the previous lady, I'd always assumed he was a black musician never having seen a picture until today.
A blessing indeed, dang he was brilliant!
I was hooked in 78!! Love it
He Is The Bet In This Style Muic
This song shows as well as any the meticulous and inspiring arrangement that characterizes Leon's work.
While teaching Intro to Art at the University of Tampa about 10 years ago, I dressed like Leon, brought my walking stick, put this on the computer speaker system, and strutted around the classroom. 😂
soothin to the bone
RIP Mr Redbone
