I also used to think of Temperance as a bit boring or restrictive until I saw the Temperance card of the Shadow Scapes Tarot. A woman is holding a sphere with the YinYang Symbol in it, but from each side a dragon is emerging and they are flying and spiralling around each other in a - what I call it - storm of Temperance. So having balance doesn’t mean you have to play it low all the times, you can go big in both ways and still achieve balance.
What wise words - balance and moderation in all things of life do lead to true pleasure. Balance and moderation in the practical everyday life gives us freedom to explore the dreamy, mystical, numinous area of life where we're connected with the greater whole.
I think everyone has those cards we jump straight to when looking at a new deck - and for me, Temperance is one of my most important. I love this card and if I find I don’t connect with how it’s represented then the deck loses something for me.
I keep pulling the Temperance card repeatedly all 2023 thus far. I resigned to her as my guide for the year ahead. Thank you for this message, it all feels resonate and timely.
That was terrific, thank you very much Kate. The older I get, the more I realise how important balance is. I'm sure you will have noticed this too (there was a lot to describe about this card), but the water between the cups seems perhaps to represent balancing the things within our control, while one food in the pond and one on the ground perhaps represents balancing the things we cannot control - the natural progression of the universe beyond our ken. Just something I notice while watching your excellent video - again, thank you!
Temperance always comes to me when im procrastinating on making needed change or doing the new thing. Its my just DO IT! even if its just a single drop of the new thing or tiny toe dip into the pool, get started then keep doing it. The time is now
I was reading Mircea Eliade's "The Forge and the Crucible" recently, which traces the history of alchemy back to ancient metallurgy. As a tarot nerd, the discussion of the "tempering" of metals brought this card to mind. It made me think this card might contain the idea of having been tested by extremes (perhaps in the previous Hanged Man and Death cards) and now coming out stronger than ever before, an interpretation which vibes well with the "healing" interpretation of this card, but adds an extra dimension for me. (PS I love this series!)
YES! I love what you shared here and it does add more depth to this card, especially when we view it in the context of the cards that have come before it.
This is absolutely my favorite card in the deck. I once did an exercise found in Mary K. Greer's book, Tarot for Yourself, where she has you enter the card and speak with "the Healing Angel". It was a very beautiful experience. Also, I have read some sources that say Temperance represents AA Michael - "with the sun on his head and who stands on the sea and the land" - Rev. 10:1-2 Great video! Thank you!
Same here. After 48 years being a reader, I am still learning about the cards. That’s why I love them because there is never an end to learning about the cards.
@@ayeshahina1097 I preferred to read in person but I only collect tarot these days, sorry. I’m sure you’ll be able to find a reputable reader in your area, I wouldn’t advise you to ask a UA-cam reader. Unfortunately there are too many who just want your money.
Oh it's very exciting! My South node is in Aries and that is a fiery energy I am working to move away from in this lifetime through the balance of Libra my north node in astrology 💗✨🙏🏽 temperance is a favourite card of mine!! Thank you ❤
i’m enjoying binge watching this series so much, and this video actually helped me understand temperance in a possibly inadvertent way - i wonder if temperance actually does have a darker side than just being a bit boring. it’s good to rebalance and return to ourselves, but maybe taking the middle path can itself go to the extreme. for example, that word “moderation” makes me think of the role that “moderate” political beliefs can play in the rise of more tyrannical empires or regimes by standing for nothing or refusing to stand in the way.
So glad your enjoying bingeing these :) That's the ultimate compliment, ha ha! Love your thoughts on Temperances dark side...hadn't considered that before.
Shadowside: *you are not able to move on from the previous card ‘death’ you are indulging just to forget a loss. (Eating, drinking, promiscuity, shopping, gambling and other addictions) *you are not connected with your spirit guides. *bad timing *you seek instant gratification instead of seeing the bigger picture. *you are not forgiving yourself or others. *psychosomatic pains
Last thing, it's funny you mentioned the cups in the angels hands, giving and reciving. This morning on the 14th, I had a dream that I was able to move objects with my hands without touching them. When I seen the illustrations of this card just now, it reminded me of my dream. Maybe it was realigning my spiritual and practical energy. The energy being the magic and practical being the objects being as on to demonstrate action through energy manifesting movement through focused and balanced energy. Sorry I've typed so much. Love the video.
Wow so insightful thank you! I've always seen Temperance as a symbol of patience and trusting the flow of life and angelic guidance but your interpretation has really helped me understand. Thank you 🙏
Thank you Kate! Great journal questions and I was reminded about divine connection. The symbol on the forehead reminds me of the symbol for the sun in Astrology. 🙂🙏🏽
I learned a lot from your presentation; thank you. Temperance is one of the four Stoic virtues. The foot in the mystical waters with the other on dry land is putting the Devine into action in life. Marcus Aurelius said that "nothing earthly succeds without heaven and nothing heavenly succeds without Earth." Also, I've wondered what the gold crown in the background represents.
Thank you so much for this teaching. I've been picking a card of the day in order learn the cards in a personal, slow-paced way. Today's card is Temperance. Your explanations are wonderful. And I love that you embody the quality of temperance in that you appear like any normal person (not excessively woo woo) yet you are very knowledgeable and your interpretation of the cards is very enlightening. I'm a subscriber now 👍🎉
I never had any special relationship with Temperance. But after listening to your video, a much greater understanding and connection to the card has arisen. Thank you very much for your nice introductions to the world of tarot.
Practicing moderation in all things can be suicidal. Sometimes circumstances demand that you make an all-out effort to fight off threatening influences. Or when you are competing in a sports event, for example, you usually need to make a 100 percent effort to come out ahead. Practicing moderation in all things is extremely immoderate.
It goes to show that you must apply moderation for that too. Moderate what needs full effort and what doesn’t. Know when to apply it; that’s moderation.
Wow. I could write a short story about how I came to this video today and it's divine lead and timing. I really needed it and it impacted me immensely. Thank you so much for taking the time to make it!
It's so weird. Today is October 14th, 2022 at 11:53 p.m so somewhat allready proceeding into the tarot of the Devil, and I must say, the 14th energy is very mystical and spiritual. I felt very in tuned with my emotions today. Almost as if I was in existence between reality and a dream. I was very comfortable in my own skin, just a little overindulgent today with food. But I felt, very mellow and serene, yet grounded in a way. Like I wasn't afraid to step out of my comfort zone. As if I have a spiritual backbone or blanket of some sort of confidence and guidance.
thank you, daily tarot girl! I like temperance when it shows up in the upright I think to me it means working on balance and that I am on a good path. When it shows up in reverse is when I feel like it is showing me being out of balance. I learned from you about the triangle and fire and angel in the middle. cultivating sustainability whether it is upright or in reverse! the middle path. thank you!
The Rhythm of Life is a movement and a rest. The optimum (Heaven), is always found somewhere between the extremes of too much and too little (hell). Pleasantness is the Rose found at the Heart of the Optimum. Just so. Narrow is the Way and straight the path, and few there are that find it.
This has been such a helpful explanation of this card. I love your comments about pleasure, which have some support from the current thinking neuroscience! In her book, Dopamine Nation, Dr. Anna Lembke describes the long-term problems created by our constant pleasure seeking and how we are eventually incapable of pleasure. It seems like one of those instances where we finally have some scientific understanding and evidence for the gut instincts, intuition, and wisdom of women. Your explanations always resonate with me. Thanks so much for sharing your incredible insight into the cards! :)
I like the intepretation, it would have been nice to see de Marsella Tarot card as well to compare a bit and see coincidences in symbols. Thanks very much for that information, it was well-thought, and the way you expressed the ideas kinds of transmits the energy of the card.
Super helpful! Thank you ❤🔥 you are very easy to listen to and your holding of self and your own values makes me feel very comfortable and receptive to learning in your energetic states. So much gratitude for all your work! ✨🙏🏻✨🌞
I pulled this card with the question in mind of whether I should ever have children. I'm a huge fence-sitter about that, although lately I'm more drawn to the childfree side. I took the temperance card to mean that I shouldn't rush to make a decision either way, and to be patient in figuring out my path. Any ideas?
9:58 At this moment, I was struck by an idea. Select the Temperance card and place face up in the center of the table. Ask or think the question: "What areas in my life need this?" While you shuffle, then select cards to place around the Temperance card. I suppose this may be 6 to 8 cards, but however many seem good to you. I'm just a beginner, though. There are probably already spreads for this.
This is so helpful!! This card has come up for me so much this year…especially with questions about my career. Your explanation helps me understand it SO much better. Also the healing aspect, I hadn’t heard that before and it’s spot on! I gave gave gave for years and it wrecked me. (Also the foot in the water of the mystical…that perfectly describes me right now.) Curious about the glowing crown in the background…what do you feel that represents?
Let me look up the meaning of the crown in my guidebook and get back to you....I did look into it when I was researching this card and I think I didn't bother including it in the video because it didn't make sense to me at the time.
I just love these weekly dives into the majors. I always walk away with so much more than how I originally viewed the card. Question…is the yellow crown in the background also a symbol for divine knowledge? I look forward to next week’s dive, and thank you for this series. 🙏🏻❤️🌟
I'm so glad you're enjoying these, Susan! I'm glad you asked about the crown - I actually meant to look up it's meaning and include that in the video but I forgot. Yes, I think it's a symbol of divine knowledge.
I have picked up and put down tarot throughout my life many times. This time though I think it is time. I've been trying to figure out where I fall in the fools journey. And I had it hit me today like a lighting bolt... Temperance. And I find that funny because temperance has been the card I've struggled with figuring out what's going on in the picture. And that makes sense now. It's hard to see the mess when you're in the middle of it.

I'm so glad you're enjoying these, Susan!
I'm glad you asked about the crown - I actually meant to look up it's meaning and include that in the video but I forgot. Yes, I think it's a symbol of divine knowledge.
I’m catching up lol. I appreciate you!
ty you so much❤
I have picked up and put down tarot throughout my life many times.
Thank you!!!🙏

I noticed that this card is alot like the Star tarot card ruled by Aquarius.
With one foot in the water and the other on dry land!
Yes! There is some similarities between those cards for sure!
Thanks Kate
Im new at learning tarot. During this talk, which was very good, you didn’t mention the yellow sun in the background that looks like theres a crown in it and the angels red wings. Can you say anything about those? I learned a lot with what you did talk about. Thank you ❤️
Yeah but a lot of knowledge in those cars that you're very very good my question was I was going to go to the casino again and I've lost a couple times and then the temperance came out as my first card which would mean the present tarot card spread the hold 10 cards anyway so it was like an image your present so I still confused I don't know if it's telling me I should go if I shouldn't so I'm probably not going to go now I haven't been winning so I was just asking if I should go tomorrow have a chance to win the forever bus ride but you know I didn't know if it was going to be my lucky day and I still don't know I'm I'm still confused I'm trying really hard to learn these cars but they are confusing
Life Path 14/5
So when you say that every card has a dark side to it, does that dark side only apply if the card is reversed?
This is a card I haven't been able to connect with yet, I think I'll have to watch this video again.. 🙈
I think it can be a tricky card to really connect with - there is something a bit stiff about Temperance.
Kate, I’ve read somewhere that the circle on the forehead of the Angel is the sign of the sun, and this Angel might represent Archangel of the Sun Michael. What do you think about it?
I think that's most likely correct! I think I've heard that too now that you mention it.
Is there any meaning behind the angels red wings?
I'm sure there is. I will look into it.
They almost look like devil wings… I wonder if this is more to do with the theme of balancing the angelic realm and the demonic.

Isent it a positive card?
I see it as being more of a neutral card.
