When people say look at this or look at that I always ask them to tell me what they are seeing. That turns it into an opportunity for me to hear about it and for them to give me their view of things. With close friends, after a while they will just do it automatically. When I drive around with them as they're looking around they will actually read signs out loud and get visual descriptions of what's going on. It actually strengthens the relationship.
My partner has RP and has lost near to 90% of his vision. Despite this, he works as a nuclear engineer, participates in marathons, and runs a Podcast/website (Blind Sanity Podcast). Thanks for making this content brother, it’d be great if you two could connect. 💪🏽🇺🇸
Hello Derek it's been awhile since I've seen one of your videos. I was thinking about other common misconceptions people have about sight-impaired or blind people. How about people thinking that all blind people know how to read Braille
One of my professors described total blindness, as what you see out of the back of your head. That means no dark, no light, no nothing. That’s what nothing is.
Nice video thanks for pointing those things out , indeed blind does not mean you dont see anything , my eye doctor always kinda explained it like 'your brain is entertaining itself those are the things you "see"' Greets Mak :)
This might sound silly but before I got a guy dog I always assumed that they automatically knew where to take their person.😂 now I know better you have to know where you are going so they can help you get there..
As far as myth number five or using words that are visual, I don’t have a problem with that where I do have a problem was when you’re out in the public and you asked for some directions or help and somebody was saying we just re-designer, they pointed say it’s over there and you have no idea where the sign is. She have no idea what they’re pointing at the Fairfield knew where the sign why she couldn’t read it anyway so I think awareness Needs to be a bigger thing amongst the sighted community. How do you help somebody? What do you have to analyze why they ask the question if they asked a question for some help then OK respond appropriately don’t just absent mindedly say oh it’s over there and then a minute later realize that they can’t see anything orange can’t see much and they’re using white cane for a reason just saying.
I love this discussion. Thanks so much. I spend a lot of time debunking myths when I meet people. Educating your community is a benefit to everyone.

Great video as usual,
and thanks for debunking those myths!

That's an interesting analogy! I think I'll use that ;)
