I read Heinlein's novel several time and I am aware he was a terrible tease - it was hard to tell if he genuinely believed the ideas he presented in his novels. Just look at Stranger in a Strange Land. And I wonder if director Paul Verhoeven was the same. The society in the movie was not fascist at all, and was actually quite appealing with it's lack of nationalism, it's egalitarianism and prosperity. The society promoted it's Military Service while at the same time discouragining participation unless you accepted the price. The military WERE NOT PERFECT, they badly underestimated The Bugs. I understand that Verhoeven was showing that no matter how attractive and appealing the Military Service might be, it still ended up a meat grinder in the end.
