    It just goes to show that this is a cleverly designed song, yet beautifully planned and performed. The live devotional version still brings a lump to my throat.

    Got in love with Depeche Mode as a 10 year old kid so they were the first band I fell in love with and made me interested in music in general. My musical taste progressed into heavier stuff by the end of elementary school so I started listening to metal. My high school years were fully rock and metal which got me into playing guitar but I've never forgotten DM so every month or two I come back to listen to an album at least.
    Thank you very much for doing these videos with Andy! They truly bring so much insight to bass and guitar parts in DM songs which are often overheard. Even though I play guitar for almost a decade, I didn't notice this instrument's high presence in SOFAD. Probably because DM is mainly electronic so we don't expect it to sound rocky and groovy but man, your album review series are truly making me look at DM through different eyes, or should I say, listen with different ears :D

    Another great, pedagogic and laid back way to share some DM secrets! "Walking in my shoes" is one of those tracks that made me want to make music. Thanks! I so agree with you, guys: there is such a melancholic feeling with tracks fading out and sometimes a fascination for the ones with an instrument or the vocals starting a new melody... but you can barely hear it (the sax from M83 "Midnight City" or Madonna finishing "Borderline" with a lovely little melody...are the 2 that come to my mind right now :-) ).

    A completely different genre here- but perhaps rock fans out there will agree with this! Regarding Fade Outs in songs, I think one of the best out there is Guns N Roses "Night Train" . The song comes to its conclusion with Slash roaring up the fretboard one of his best solos driving the track full steam ahead. Then the fade out begins, and its like hearing a train leave in the distance, into the fading night. It commands the rewind button to relive the end moments again and again. But sometimes fadeouts leave me really wanting more of the song! Regarding DM, I think "Halo"s fadeout is a bit premature. Fantastic song, but the fade out makes we wish there was another coda, verse, new section in the track to really complete it. I just want more Halo, in other words! This video here is terrific. I love guitar getting looked at in DM tracks like this, and Walking in my Shoes is a towering masterpiece.

      I'm the rare fan (there are a few of us) that actually like a lot of the post SOFAD stuff. Even beyond ultra. I like DM, but didn't get into them fully until Ultra, Exciter, etc . I love the late 80s/early 90s stuff but to me it also sounds a bit overproduced at times.

      @@barry-clark Ultra is great. Its dark, mysterious and broody. Harnessing a lot of the doom laden woozy trip hop going on at the time. I love the insomnia cursed freak out of "Barrel of a Gun". That song got me through some tough times. "Its no Good" is a Brilliant super cool spin down the Autobahn. "Useless" is an incredible, grungy stomp through bad times coming good. And bloody hell, the album finale of "Insight" is a beautiful, dark masterpiece. The atmosphere on that song is incredible and Dave sings it brilliantly. Ultra is Great.

    Fade outs, with veeeery few exceptions, suck, period. Even Alan admitted they weren't the best way to end a song.
    It's really the worst part of an otherwise brilliant album, and something the band really abused in the previous albums too. I mean, 7 fade outs out of 10 songs , are you serious?
    The most annoying ones are, however on Violator. World in My Eyes, Halo and Clean all have proper endings, but you need to turn the volume up a lot to notice them. Very frustrating

    • @kylereece1979
      @kylereece1979 3 місяці тому +2

      I agree with you on "Halo"s fadeout. It to me feels that the songs full potential is stolen. It makes the song sound half finished to me. Its all going great, but suddenly, its momentum fades out asthough it hasnt got anywhere else to go, leaving you wanting more. I actually dont mind the fade outs on other songs as at least I get a lot of everything the song has to give leading up to it. Halo feels too short lived and missing something else, because of its fade out.

      @@kylereece1979what should be there instead of fadeout???

    • @kylereece1979
      @kylereece1979 2 місяці тому +1

      @@abhilashpanda5758 Well, when performed live the music continues at a driving pace, keeping the movement and mood going. It has more time to breath, roam and emote.
      And it just then comes to a natural stop that doesnt sound sudden or abrupt.
      Its a normal end of the road fot the track and sounds good and grand. I always felt the album version fades out rather quickly as though its getting its momentum phased out too soon. So, just let the music go a bit more, maybe some more cool effects and pieces in there then, like live, it naturally stops. The live devotional version is a good indication of how Id like the album version to finish.👍

    • @abhilashpanda5758
      @abhilashpanda5758 2 місяці тому

      @@kylereece1979 yeah agree. Was just confirming if we are on the same page. This is where Ultra shines for me. Every song ends with an extended outro weather it's a rousing guitar solo such as in freestate or something epic like in Home or subtle tunes like in Bottom line or Sister of night. Or the sexy backing vocals in Insight. While I love Violator and mftm this is the same frustration for me. The songs just fade away.

    • @kylereece1979
      @kylereece1979 2 місяці тому +1

      @@abhilashpanda5758 👍Absolute agree on Ultra. The songs have a definitive finish to them. With the previous trauma and darkness in their lives leading to it, the songs have an accomplished sense and purpose to them.
      I think though- that Sister of Night has a fade out that, Id have changed. Id have its intro come back again, and have it build up to a more rousing end, again like how it is done live.
      Insight- One of my fave Depeche songs. I love how its fluttering shimmering intro gives way to its more optimistic , hopeful way home at its end. That song especially got me through some rough times only as recent as last year.👍
