Alec Steele Blacksmith 2022 - Розваги
I think the brass handle would have looked fantastic, even after it oxidized. But the all black look is pretty freakin' cool. Nice build!
Yea i think so too. But it does look awesome either way
Imagine if he made the preblack version and sold them as a pair. Makes me think of a royal display 1 and then the actually used 1
When making a kydex sheath, I always add a piece of oiled leather to hold the tip so it doesn't rattle at all. That allows the blade to not have to touch the plastic and get scratshed over time and still be fully secure.
Better still, line the whole thing with leather so it automatically strops the blade whenever it's sheathed/unsheathed!
Joe R, that's an excellent tip! Thanks for sharing😊
Of all possible places (including outside) for sandblasting you decided to do it right next to your precision machinery.😂 Absolute mad lad.
Edit: Nontheless a very cool project and handsdown an outstanding result.
Just thinking this lol
criminal! where is he during the week?
I was screaming, don't blast it there 😭
Yeah I was facepalming throughout xD

I love this latest “Hey Jaime” version of how you talk and explain things during the videos. It creates a very comfortable and natural listening/viewing experience.
Probably the "simplest" looking piece you've made over the last few years but also one of the most beautiful. You've made quite a few ambitious implements to varying degrees of usually successful, but this is something else. Simple, elegant. Really cool.
Sand blasting next to the mill and not next to the grinder? Sends chills down me spine.
8:55 lmao, "Im not good with my left hand" hahaha
Ive been excited waiting on this one. What a cool project
For what its worth..... If you are having trouble getting the Dykem to show the rub points when fitting something like a handle you can go real old fashion and smoke mark it..... using a small oil lamp or even a oxy-fuel torch set two smoke slightly (fuel rich) pass the part over the flame breifly. It will deposit a thin layer of lamp black.... works just like dykem but is much easier to rub off so its easier to mark the contact patches. Hope it helps
As a royal marine I have searched for main years to find a commando dagger of this quality and function but unfortunately they do not exist! what you have achieved is really quite beautiful and an amazing example of a blade that carries a lot of history and if I was you, I would be very proud to be the owner of it.
The pride this man has for his work is such a lovely thing to see. What a wonderful knife.
"I'm not really good at left hand" 🤣🤣
The machinist in me was screaming when you started blasting ON your milling machine, but then that knife came out and... I can't even stay mad. That thing is absolutely beautiful.
I’d like to see a series on making small scale swords. Like a 1/4 scale katana, 1/4 scale cutlass, 1/4 scale claymore, sword breaker, 1/4 scale zweihander… would be pretty cool to turn swords into daggers and knives
Zweihänder
Now for a real challenge, make 20 more just like it. You always manage to blow my mind! Beautiful life.
The sand blasting reminds me that when I made paintball markers, we'd use sand blasing and painter's tape to make weird patterns on the surface before anodizing the aluminum parts. Hopefully before you try anything like that you make a sand blasing enclosure and put it very far away from your mill. ( I mean, you have a welding table that sand blasting medium won't worry, but you put it ON your mill? Insanity. Beautiful work, but insanity.)
Amazing project. Revisiting a project from long ago with new techniques. It’s crazy to see how far it has come
Love this type of Dagger, it looks both beautiful and deadly. It's a functional work of art and it looks like you've made another stunning example. They could be my 2 favourite Daggers on your channel. Making a fake rope from 3 different colour wires twisted together and fitting it in to the twists would look stunning, especially if you put them on after the black and treated them with a clear spray sealant of some kind. You would probably have been stabbed during WW2 if you'd had that version of the Dagger instead of the standard issue one by someone who couldn't help themselves they wanted it so badly....
I would love to see him make a medieval crossbow
It's quite astonishing watching your craft transform and get even better every time I come back! I remember when you were still in that small shop in the UK, and I just have to say never quit doing what you do! Its an absolute pleasure getting to watch an artist make something beautiful from nothing and thats exactly what you are, an artist!
same.. in this time I have taken engineering as a job, left said job went self employed, set up a mechanical engineering company closed that and now have a 'real' job in health and safety aka the devils work! But Alec keeps learning and surpassing knowledge and ability of what he had yesterday.... respect is due
Your videos never fail to accomplish 2 things; First, I am immediately inspired to make another knife, while secondly, suffering from serious shop envy. One of the coolest things about having my own forge is adding on a little at a time, learning new skills. Another GREAT video. Thank you again....
Cerakote is an amazing product and it's actually fairly easy to do at home. Sometimes it doesn't want to adhere, depending on the product finish, however its easier to get it to adhere if you have a base layer of parkerization or similar rust inhibitor base coating. Plus, it's easier to spray while still warm (from parkerizing tank) because the heat helps prevent dripping from the cerakote.
I really hope you use the product more now and can't wait til you realize they have a laser imaging pattern that can give you multiple colors and patterns by simply laser etching a cerakoted part. It is simply mind blowing.
You can get a Preval Sprayer and get fairly decent results, and you don't have to get the oven cured kind, they make an air cure version of every color.
Here is a novel solution to creating brass handles.
1. Cast the knife tang in wax
2. Remove the wax blank with a torch
3. Carve the wax blank to your desired handle aesthetic
4. Use lost wax casting to convert it into brass or bronze
5. Adhere it to the blades tang
In five years or so of watching Alec's channel, I don't think any single video has ever gone by where someone in the comments didn't ask Alec to make a "Butterfly Knife," which we all know is illegal in the UK. I've figured out how he can do it! First make a beautiful, damascus, scalpel handle and blade. Next go out in a field with a net, and proper PPE, and catch a butterfly (and let Jamie edit that scene). Pin the butterfly to a board, as bug collectors do. Put the butterfly under the microscope/camera and do a proper high school biology class dissection, with the labels and all, using the damascus scalpel. Then; tell everyone that you have made their damn "Butterfly Knife," and they can now stop asking everyday.
1:34 Hi Alec, to see where the handle rubs against the tang you have to sand the layer of blue Dykem with scotch brite so that the handle only needs to wear off a very thin layer of blue Dykem to see bare steel. that way you can see more clear where the handle rubs the tang
Nice to see something relatively simple and in a less than 10 part series.
This series was soooo much fun to watch. Really appreciate the return to knife/blade stuff and I really love how well this came out. Can't wait to see the sheath making too!
I don't usually comment on videos, but that blade is beautiful. I thought it was going to be an absolute shame to cerakote it because it was already beautiful, but it looks absolutely fantastic both ways.
I want one of these, in hand, time now. The stippling is a nice touch that gives it such a sharp and sleek look! I can hardly wait to see how it all comes together.
End product looked badass, but I enjoyed the beauty of how it looked prior to the cerakote. It looked very elegant
Hi, Alec
I´m a trained mashinist from germany and i almost fell out of my chair in shock when you sandblasted the parts ontop of your mill and right next to your laith. Please do your self and your mashines a favor and make sure the there is no blasting medium in the guidings of the mashines. It will make the mashines uncomfortable to use and will damage them severly in the long run and will cost you accuracy pretty quickly by wearing down the metal.
Greetings from germany and have a nice day.
P.S. I love watching your videos and you were the reason why i gave metalworking a chance in the first place
Nice to see something practical made. You should try making a fractal vice. Hand tool rescue restored one it's awesome.
Alec, Id like you to forge a sculpture, or an art piece. Anything youd hang up on the wall, and uses your entire skillset and shows off everything you've learned over the years
Use showy high quality materials >> painstakingly bring every surface to a perfect high finish >> sand blast it with 80/120 grit medium (make sure its on top of precision equipment) >> paint it all matte black
That little sliver of light surrounding the black dagger makes it look terrifyingly lethal! Great work as always, looking forward to the sheath video!
I'm still amazed at how much you listen to what Jamie tells you , and more so how often he's right
Amazing, there's really something about making something so simple yet so well executed. This Dagger is proof of that. Looks super clean. Good job!

DAYUM ALEC! Vascular as hell!
Any commando would be proud to have a blade like that!
"Wow, I'm not really good with my left hand", I felt that.
That brass handle was epic, maybe next one without colouring?
such a pleasure to see a master back doing what he does best. Thank you
perfect type of project on the channel. I loved watching this series. The way it was filmed and the goofyness made me think of the first era of videos in this workshop.
11:06 - At certain angles, it looks like a Star Wars 'Dark Light' knife/Darkknife with that matt black blade with white/silver edges.. 🤔😏😉👍
😎🇬🇧
sandlasting right besides the mill ? absolute mad lad
I really wish they would have filed the grooves back out on the handle so the gold brass color came through that black cerakote. I think it would have looked super dope.
Absolutely gorgeous! Definitely a piece to be proud of!
Awesome!!! That's a certifiable man-stickin' tool right there, Fairbairn would be impressed.
oooooh! Touch of sandpaper on the handle, just enough to get the brass to shine through the bevel edges!
I wish I could feel it in the hand, that is an amazing build!!! Beautiful job and congratulations on the new skills.
I love the production value on all of your videos. Great work.
That came out better than I expected when you did the cerakoting. I was all like, "You're gonna ruin it!" but I was wrong.
Just a helpful tip for mating surfaces and highlighting contact points don't use dykem it's too thick use permatex prussian blue which is designed for that, you'll thank me later 😁
Maybe try a little light sanding on the bit where yous stippled the heft to make some of the brass shine through. I think that might make it even cooler
I thought the original look, with the bronze, looked good, but the blacked out look is even better. Well done.
Love the finish, completed the dagger !!
Although it would be far too flashy for a commando, I actually prefer the look before sandblasting.
That said, I would LOVE to see an SAS evaluate the knife you produced, Alex.
Hats off for the editing, just incredible
Alec needs to get a sand blasting machine sometime, well at least a proper enclosure for it so he can just keep blasting the pieces without worrying about the sand getting all over the place.
Wow Alec! That is just outstandingly beautiful. You're a true artist.
Sandblasting on a milling machine. Genius.
I kinda wish you'd kept the handle un-sandblasted and unpainted, honestly. The matte black blade with a shiny gold-colored handle would look *super* cool.
Probably one of my favorite knives. Awesome job!
What a lovely piece - bravo. Great to see you making blades.
Really, really great work, Alec. When you were describing the grip you were imagining for the handle in the second episode of this series, I knew it was going to come out fantastic with the cerakote…and you pulled it off with exceptional finesse. It’s beautiful!
Turn the tip of your spray gun 90 degrees for spraying vertical pieces so you have a horizontal fan pattern.
suggestion to maybe enhance the look: the spiral flutes and possibly a horizontal line going around the ball screw, like maybe along the indent between the ball screw and the handle, use the dremel to carefully remove the seracote so you have some accent and contrast to really make it pop. maybe there is a better way to do it but that was my thought
More projects like this, please!
How about a redux of more early projects using your increased XP to make them even cooler?
Wow looks amazing. But I'm honestly not sure if I liked it better before or after the black coating.
I kind of wish you'd left the handle as it was. I think the gold and black would have made an awesome combination.
simple, elegant perfection Alec. You did good.
Beautiful piece. The only part I personally wish was different would be the slightest bit of exposed brass. Even with the subdued sandblasted finish it would be awesome
By far one of your coolest builds to date!
It does make sense, that your best work is the most resent ... you learn and get better all the time. NICE dagger!
That is the best fit and finish I have ever seen you accomplish in all the years that I have been watching you. Nice job.
this is my favorite so far..great work
Yes! Really happy you are making a sheath for a project, also I did rate the brass finish but it came great in black :)
That dagger is straight fire... Awesome work... Keep it up
That's one mean yet beautiful dagger! Amazing work 👍
Great to see a build work out so nicely for Alec. That blade looks so sleek
I like how excited you were in this one man, makes me happy for you
that is the prettiest fairbairn i've ever seen. top notch for sure. great job!
Spectacular WW2 Commando Dagger !!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful work, as always!
hands down the most badass and scary looking knife Ive ever seen. very well done
Looks great! I agree, this is probably at least one of your better blades. Imho I think you should’ve left the flutes unpainted. The contrast between the paint and brass had been awesome!
Yeah man, I need to see more "second versions" of these. I want to see how far you have come from your first early pieces. Katana would be dope. Or a glaive. Glaives are dope.
Been watching since you started and this piece shows all your accumulated skills and talent, well done Sir!👍
This is absolutely amazing. Looks machine made!
Probably my favorite knife you've made and you've made some amazing knives!
That blade looks amazing!
Looks amazing. Out of everything you have made this is the one that I would want to have myself. Awesome job. 👍
about your sandblasting "medium".
it could interest "madam" because basically crystallized aluminum oxide is called corundum, a very effective abrasive;
but if you add, to the corundum, a little chromium oxide you obtain ruby and if it is vanadium; sapphire
I love that you made the handle out of brass and had that nice contrast to steel, then painted it all black, 😂
But was great seeing you trying new things!
And congrats on making your most accurately lined up knife!
Yeah I was a little confused on that. I really wasn't expecting the painting, not to say it doesn't look fantastic.
Absolutely stunningly beautiful knife
Blasting next to your Bridgeport - you absolute monster!
Beautiful blade. Great vid. Thanks. 😊
Hey Alec. When you are looking inside a bore to see where it is contacting use a bulb light such as a Maglite not an LED torch. an LED is too bright and doesn't show things very well. also shine the torch at an angle from the other end of the bore, if its goes all the way through, will improve your vision inside the bore 100%
Stunning! Very well done! 👍🤗
Really pleased for you Alec, hard work definitely paid off. Beautiful piece.
THAT is an absolutely gorgeous piece of kit!
i would probably have used a knurling wheel across the whole textured portion of the handle, then gone back and cut the flutes in, probably would have saved you having to clean the flutes 3 times and still gotten some amazing grip
Next project needs a fully stone handle! Many cool gemstones out there
