There is a massive statue of him in Geneva Switzerland, at the Reformation Wall.

As a native Rhode Islander I was stunned and happy to see his statue there, alongside other great thinkers. I worked there for many years and would bring fellow visiting Rhode Islanders there to see the statue, as part of my "tour".

Roger Williams gave to the American idea such as freedom of religion and separation of church & state; It's too bad he didn't get his way in his opposition to slavery. Williams was centuries ahead of his time.

    It gets worse than that.
He was saved and fed by the Natives when he was kicked out of Mass. colony, and even as he writes letters to people in the colony (which the Natives delivered for him) he refers to them as "barbarians". Talk about biting the hand that feeds you...
Having said all that, I'm grateful that his ideas regarding separation of church and state made their way into our constitution. I'm so glad we don't get our morals from religion...
    Reason shall prevail!!!

Accounts mention him fleeing in the middle of winter, but what about his wife and children? Did they not flee as well?

Hi life was a mess in many ways, just like my life, but by the divine providence of God he was greatly used nonetheless. That gives hope to all of us who know the Lord.

"Instruments of the devil" this clearly show our lack of understanding of peoples visions in the past we think of them as just religious non sensical people to be avoid. When in reality they have much much much more depth than our shallow understanding of propagandistic history. I bet these people where extremely talented in a thousand ways including music and instruments but they were also very strong in their understanding of things too. It is not like they had UA-cam, NBC, fox, Google, Netflix, NFL. NBA etc to get entertained with.

Roger Williams was not the benevolent founder you portray him to be. He knew the plans to eliminate the natives and did nothing about it.

ckairnes68, let’s see your evidence for that claim. He loved the natives as family and remained so even when the burned the village of Providence that happened to include his own hone. After the fire he rode to their settlement and simply asked, “why?” They remained friends until he died. He knew nothing of plans to annihilate them. That was never his way
