Bruno Walter was in charge but also warm. Reiner was in charge but cold. Szell was like Reiner in that respect. Perlman is a master violinist who plays with warmth and generosity. That’s what I like.
Love him. No score apparently. He knows it so cold. It’s like sacred ground to watch such a pro and such a great communicator. To the point without being gruff.
My teacher, Felix Wolfes, and Bruno Walter were close friends. They were both acolytes of Gustave Mahler and colleagues of Richard Strauss, Hans Pfitzner, and the like. There’s a certain elegance in their demeanor and their music making that I very much miss. What a lovely gentleman! What a great musician!
Absolutely incredible conductor. I find his "less is more" style brilliantly effective. And advising the orchestra whilst they play so not to interrupt the flow - superb.
These are young people, but he was just as kind with his orchestra, and called the players by name. The Mozart rehearsals, he addresses "Mr Bloom" a few times. Check out his Mozart Piano Concerto with VPO. He plays and conducts. I've never heard such phrasing!
-OTTO KLEMPERER: Bruno Walter is very good conductor, but he is absolutely other character than I am. He is... It is difficult to speak about it... He is very consiliated, elegant and mild. I'm not. JOHN FREEMAN: He is very romantic? OTTO KLEMPERER: Very romantic, I'm not at all. He is... But don't misunderstand .. He is moralist, I'm immoralist. Absolutely!- ( From serial of interviews -FACE TO FACE-)
I love that interview with Klemperer! He is very funny. Immoralist-he had some pretty wild affairs in his youth. As for me, I think the mark of a civilized person is to not judge other people’s sex lives unless they are doing damage to someone.
Dr. Walter, who says in his interview with Mr. Goldman that “Beethoven was the first star in my firmament”, was at the time of this interview very much in the midst of recording (stereophonically) an integral cycle of the Beethoven symphonies in Hollywood. He also taped an integral Brahms cycle (a Grand Prix du Disque winner), the last six symphonies of Mozart, Schubert Symphonies 5, 8 and 9; Bruckner 4, 7 and 9; Mahler 9 and some delectable Wagner during these last years. Had not cardiovascular problems stopped him, Walter would have recorded a Schumann cycle. Some “quiet life”! His denigration of Jazz -- I think he uses the word “jazz” as a catchall term for commercial music. Commercial music is infinitely worse today than in 1958, when this film was shot. He makes a marvelous point about the uplifting force of music -- his point about the facial expressions and demeanor of the audience changing once the music starts. It’s why we need it, maybe more than neatly 61 years ago.
No es importante su opinión sobre el jazz. Lo importante aquí es el gran músico que fue, una verdadera leyenda, con una sensibilidad enorme para estos repertorios. Enalteció la música, y nos dejó excelentes grabaciones.
37:30 If he listened to reggaeton and the kind of popular music we have nowadays he would rapidly retreat to his grave! Unfortunately now we don't make men of such a high category
Anyone have any idea as to when the opening rehearsal was filmed? New York: "Allegro Furioso" Beverly Hills: "Allegretto Grazioso" -- I'm sure the man even dreamed in stereophonic sound!
I adore the maestro's commentary on jazz which he perceives as bullshit and even a danger for our civilisation and culture....totally marvellous indeed !
What a marvellous conductor and a lovely man. No score; all in his head. Treats the musicians with respect, unlike the Fritz Reiners and George Szells of the world, who were nasty, awful and condescending.
Reiner and Szell were certainly unpleasant, but Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra made music of unsurpassed beauty. Their recordings of the last three Mozart symphonies have never been surpassed, and the same can be said for a great many other works. In art, the man is irrelevant - all that matters is the work.
Ah, but despite "retiring to a life of tranquility and only occasionally picking up the baton," he would change his mind, shortly after this film, and do all those Columbia sessions!
You have to remember that Bruno Walter was born in 1876 and was alive at the same time as Brahms and Mahler and other greats. This is the only music he knew growing up.

brilliant man great person, one of the greatest conductors of all time
A lovely gentleman. Bravo maestro.👏
One of the greatest humanists of classical music
Great man. Great conductor...
“Brahms’ 2nd”. Takes me back to the All-City High School Orchestra-fifty-one years ago.
His recordings with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra and the NY Philharmonic are absolute references, some of them I think unequalled.
Yr right
Check out his live recordings with the NBC Symphony from when he was fresh off the boat in 1939. Mahler 1, Tchaikovsky 5, absolutely splendid stuff.

Fantastic!
Bruno Walter, uno de mis directores favoritos. Gracias por compartir.
Looking at the way he rehearses the orchestra, one realizes how an orchestra should be rehearsed by a conductor.
Already more music than most conductors I've played for.
These are young people, but he was just as kind with his orchestra, and called the players by name. The Mozart rehearsals, he addresses "Mr Bloom" a few times. Check out his Mozart Piano Concerto with VPO. He plays and conducts. I've never heard such phrasing!
Bruno didn’t need to scream or throw tantrums.

@@philipkuttner7945 Indeed. Otto Klemperer spoke with respect about Bruno Walter. It is very obvious
LOL My thoughts exactly. It's impossible for me to watch this rehearsal and not having Klemperer's voice in my head.

Dr Walter was magical.
Re his remark about “jazz,” Stravinsky liked jazz, and Ravel, Rachmaninov, and Berg liked Gershwin. Still, I love Dr. Walter as a
conductor.!!!!
Thank you

Can t believe..a God
With all due respect, he can keep his opinion on Jazz as just an opinion.
The interviewer specifically asked Walter for his opinion and he obliged by giving it. His background was much different than yours or mine.
You have to remember that Bruno Walter was born in 1876 and was alive at the same time as Brahms and Mahler and other greats. This is the only music he knew growing up.

Brahms symphony No.2 브람스 교향곡 2번
Does anybody know which orchestra he is here conducting?
The Festival Orchestra of Vancouver.
I liked everything about this except is ignorant statements about jazz.
Adorable. My favourite Brahms. Childhood memories ❤

What a great man and conductor-except his opinion on jazz :p
I wonder what Walter thinks about the music of today, talk about appealing to the lesser instincts of man, we need another world war to fix this.
