The International Space Station: a unique space project | DW Documentary

- The International Space Station (ISS) is a unique venture. It is the largest project in space the world has ever seen. Since its first component was launched into orbit on 20 November, 1998, the ISS has experienced both highs and lows.
This documentary explores the singular historical situation that made the construction of the ISS possible and hears firsthand from crew members from various nations. It sheds light on the challenges that ISS crews have faced over the years, such as the fact that, for a long time, female astronauts were unable to carry out space walks because there were no suitable space suits available for women. The films also shows how space can be deeply affected by political crises, as events such as the war in Ukraine have been felt in the confined spaces of the ISS. Nonetheless, the International Space Station is proof that nations can work together towards incredible common goals - not for nothing has it been called "humankind’s most valuable machine”. But the end fast approaching. The project was supposed to end in 2024, until the US government agreed to continue operating the ISS until 2030. In 2031, the space station is due to be brought back to Earth using a controlled process of de-orbiting.

Spacial cooperation is the BEST example of borderless scientific cooperation. The James Webb Space Telescope is another FEMOMENAL example! ❤
PHenomenal…

Mir was launched and operated by Soviet Union and later Russia from 1986 to 2001. At the time it was the largest space station out there only surpassed by International Space Station launched a decade later in 1998.
I give my applauds to Mir before any other space stations.
This is obviously not the International Space Station, but a space station belonging to a few countries
Yes.
International Space Station : Now New International Geopolitical hub.
DW's description and presentation nice.
Four minutes mark, rapidly skipping ahead to see if this is anything more than just a trip down nostalgia lane. Probably not.
Very informative documentary 👍 👏 👌
It's a shame the cooperative spirit has died.
😓😢
"Divide and conquer". Most people that come to power have no conscience and are full of self-interest. Dividing people suits them greatly.
@@simonrajh ...and good people tend to avoid power. The best person we ever had as a president in the US wasn't really the best at the job. Jimmy Carter. Big heart.
Thanks DW. Nice doc.
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
Thankyou DW❗
Nowadays we live in an era of cheap "viral" videos which is nonsense but garner millions of views.
So viewing high quality documentaries which are made with considerable time and effort is praiseworthy.
We also appreciate that these world class documentaries are free of cost , without irritating viewers with hidden subscription fee.
Keep it up ❗

Only after 23 years, the crews in ISS can now say "Hello" to a new and modern space station opposite them in the orbit!
So valuable for science and peace!
here’s to another 25 years of international friendship in space. we’re all humans
The space exploration requires collaboration from all brilliant scientists and engineers in the world. I hope it is all inclusive for all mankind
Love your documentary it inspires me❤😊
Thanks for watching!
😢 It may be incredibly expensive, but I think the ISS is worth its full weight in every experiment, contribution and astronaut experience, to be brought down safely to Earth. Or at least a third of it to be placed in the museum of humanity.
I agree with you and I think humans visiting it as tourists will recoup that expense back in years(though it may be a lot of years)
Expanding into space should be the goal for our species instead of fighting here on Earth and destroying ourselves
😂 stop it
It's not international if China is not allowed in.
No need to invite the Chinese. They would steal every single tech on the ISS anyway.
Cooperation, borderless. These are just empty fancy words with US the hegemony in control.
Cool. Maybe someday we'll be able to get beyond low Earth orbit. 😒
This video is great for introducing the International Space Station! I also recently discussed other space projects on my channel. But in this video is a different perspective on the universe and space.
Imagine if people like this ran the world instead of power people.
Intelligence, goodwill, courage.
New era alright... that's lead us to more fightiung.
Starship is going to change everything. ONE launch of starship has as much pressurized volume as the ENTIRE ISS.
And.... the concept of peace and love between the two countries has been flushed down the toilet today 😅
Someone forgot about moon landing saying „we had no experience we just had money” 😂😂😂
I thought the LHC at Cern was the most valuable machine....Is that wrong? Still, I love the ISS!
It is a wonderful documentary about international space station around Earth orbs.. international Astronomical Technology ...thank you for your DW documentary channel for sharing
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
What is crazy is that astronauts have to use spotify and pay for it....
Wtf.?
Need 4k all spase video... +30min

-Space may be the final frontier but its made in a Hollywood basement.
I wonder how communication works on the ISS seeing as a German astronaut who been there a year still have to be dubbed while doing a simple interview.
It is the ISS for the West and Soviet Union without China or other developing countries.
Bring the ISS scientists to planet earth and maybe there will be peace on earth!
So like comets and meteors would directly hit the iss before burning up in space right?
Um....no.
Hallowen already celebrated in ISS how about Ramadan in the near future?
There is Tiangong now.
Although it is called the International Space Station, it excludes China, so China had to build its own space station.
co-operation with a dictator obviously did not lead to anything good at all.

Mostly it was to employ soviet scientist after the fall of the USSR
Wait, did I just hear the word Russia? *gnashes teeth, eyes roll in back of head, starts speaking in tongues*
The world's most expensive machine, but not necessarily the most valuable machine. Nobel winning physicist Steven Weinberg called it an "orbital turkey". ISS sucked $billions out of NASA budget to the loss of many more interesting planetary and lunar missions.
Weinberg is a hack.
Mostly it was to employ soviet scientists after the fall of the USSR
@@DSAK55 Yes, and they really wanted those closed-cycle Russian engines.

Valuable or expensive?
Valuable
@albeca7591 thank you for your expert opinion
valuable, it was relatively cheap

Why is tha the end coming or wha
So pity, that US destroyed this cooperation among nations.
So why are they ending it?
End of lifecycle. The modules become compromised after a long time. So option A: start replacing the modules one by one or option B: build a completely new station on the moon or LEO.
@@ajlopeman4122 Couldn’t they just remodel and refurbish it?
@@kovy689 Although recent advances in rocket technology have reduced costs, remodelling and refurb would be time consuming and significantly more expensive, because astronauts would have to work on-site in space, spacewalks are exhausting for the astronaut and crew, you'd need specialty tools for assembly, it would be like assembling a submarine under water. New modules are already being designed, built and tested on Earth already. Materials have advanced, modules are probably going to be more spacious as well.
now let us make a better one, this time at an equatorial orbit instead of 55 degree inclination
Can China dock an spacecraft on Russia side of international spacestation as American ban China's cooperation
Ugh. Trump talking to ISS. Gross. Total opposite energies.
You've let your hatred and political persuasion influence your assessment of everything involving a person you don't like. It's never that deep!
@@mwanikinjeru3326 that's exactly what the propaganda was meant to do. .. got 'em! Lol You know, when i was a kid i always wondered how people went along with the atrocities in WW2 ... Now i have my answer.
Well, they're in space and his head is full of it! 🤠
😊😊😊😊
The design is extremely fffffaakkkeeeee
Why not add a rocket and crash it into the moon? 400 tons of high grade materials for future times on the moon to recycle.
No
It's impossible to bring up the fuel and material to make rockets powerful enough to send it to the Moon.
@@antoniousai1989It's already been done several times
@@DrJones20 Not for an object as big as the ISS, no.
Impossible to everything you said

Pls remind me why they didn't invite China 😂
I think you meant to title the video "least valuable machine" which is why it will burn up in the atmosphere after decommission.
?
The world had come together? More like the West had come together.

Now the ISS is outdated. The best space station is chinese tiangong space station, which far far more advanced than iss
Who else thinks Sergei sounds like Putin? 🤔
… the Russians want to get out of this American space organisation. The Chinese are building their own. I recommend to DW which is financed by Germany, an American colony, to indicate this and stop using “human-kind”. It’s soon just some westerners
Spacecrafts seem to have fish-eye lenses only
For china it’s a regular task now
What are you talking about
I mean, their station is more modern but in comparison, it is a tuna can. The Japanese experiment module alone on the ISS is bigger than any part of the Chinese station.
@@antoniousai1989 let's see what happens after ISS is decommisioned before 2030.
@@yourtrappedinmygenjutsu it's indeed regular task now, china kept at least 3 crew members in space at any time for the past few years and this number may still grow including inviting foreign astronauts to join the CSS in the future
@@lyttlebee They're just gonna decommission the Russian parts. The ISS will keep going, it's only natural considering they launched structural parts only 3-4 years ago.
who was a first in enter ?!) Halloween 🧐🤦♂ ARE you trully scientists?
All studios in Area 51
Shame we can't leave it in space somewhere as an historical monument or something. Just deorbiting it seems a waste, and potentially dangerous if something goes wrong.
"a unique space project" ? No, not unique. The Chinese have one too.
This was done a quarter of a century ago.

It'd be nice to be wealthy, powerful, influential, and popular enough to be able to train for and visit space. But I'm a nobody, lol! 😂 And you can't change lanes when it comes to social and financial statuses, suckahz...
Actually ya can but ya gotta be satisfied with very small gains that lead to large ones. On the side of evil an example would be the Chinese soft sabotage campaign that's been happening for years to the USA since the end times of the 1960s. It's a very unfortunate campaign for the USA and still holds it's line steady as ever today.
Libgen is a powerful source for textbooks.
So, you are referring to something that is euphemised as "social mobility"?
John Glenn was the son of a plumber and a teacher, I'd say he changed lanes just fine.

it's a dream and joke, the so called "international" does not include some countries
Elon said that his company will have humans on the moon by 2023,that didn't happen, smh
Not tryna defend him, but this is how his companies work, he gives very ambitious deadlines to make his employees work more productively to deliver quicker. They always miss those ambitious deadlines, but still deliver in the end without long delays
So how long of a delay do you think it will be?,
@@japjoem4077 realistically, I think Starship can only conduct it's first crewed moon mission (w/o landing) between 2028 to early 2030s
