    Hand sewing, in and of itself, can be an incredibly meditative act, but sewing like this changed my life.

      Interesting little ditty on meditation. I meditated regularly and formally for decades. I am very curious if you have read Buddhism Without Beliefs by Stephen Batchelor. It is the best book I have read on the very essence of Buddhism. Short book, easy read, accessible style.
      Anyway, nice to see you again. Cheers!

    I tried doing meditation several times during my life, but found it made me feel worse. When I started spinning yarn, I found that I was getting the same type of benefits as others get from meditation. My psych told me that half his patients diagnosed with anxiety disorders can't do traditional meditation. He said that having a physical aspect helped give me what I needed to get the meditation benefits. I appreciate this video showing how meditation can take place while doing things. I was 55 when I learned this. It would have been nice to know earlier.

      I remember one time that a shrink told me, after I said that I didn't like meditation but I described my headspace when I run that I was doing something similar then. When I saw the scene in _Kissing Jessica Stein_ where the title character tries meditation, opens one eye to look at the clock and is running in the next scene that I related oh so well.

    *MY LIFE IS BETTER* when it has a lot of hand sewing in it, like you I meditate whilst I sew and I find it extremely beneficial for my mental health.
    I also NEVER do housework when it HAS to be done, I never nagg myself that it should be done, I do it when I feel like it - and guess what, it all gets done, we exhaust ourselves with our internal nagging, and when I do it, I try to do each thing correctly and with calm dedication, I ONLY do that ONE task that I am doing, I'm not rushing to the next, I wash the plate I hold.

    While not exactly meditating, I have to focus on what I'm doing when I cross-stitch. If I think about 'all the things' I make mistakes, so I have to be present. My therapist told me that she thinks it does tremendous job of keeping me less stressed, because I just don't think about unwanted things. I need to try your method with sewing. I usually listen to something, but maybe trying active meditation will be helpful to me. Thank you for introducing this concept! ❤

The cuts are clean and not too fast. It’s sth I recognise in many other storytelling youtubes and I hate it because sometimes you can’t blink bc you would miss something and it stresses me a lot. So, really appreciate the fast but not too fast cuts! Lastly, this was also very calming and inspiring for my and I love your thoughts on this topic. Much love!

      There are soooo many ways to meditate. I think it is also a very misunderstood practice because of how it is so often portrayed. Which makes me sad because, I believe it could benefit many, but I can completely understand why just sitting and meditating for “hours on end” like they show in movies, could really discourage people from trying their own meditation practices (like active meditation).

    I was never able to sit and do nothing, I felt I was slacking not pulling my weight in some shape or form, as I got older I learnt that meditation takes many different forms, for me it was learning to slow down to stop going a hundred miles an hour on every job or project, it took having a heart attack at the age of 24 to suddenly learn that we only have one life to live. I still worked hard but that’s just me, but I did learn to go back to my hobbies and work on them, they gave me the chance to slow down and to appreciate much around me, to look at nature and to feel the sun on my skin. I am now 60 years old and I’m finally slowed down but not by choice but by reality, but I started hand sewing clothes in place of using the machine that I have. I was already hand sewing quilts because I loved the feel in the fabric between my fingers I loved the feel of the thread as I drew it through the fabric and how the fabric changed as each stitch was placed. My Mom loved machine sewing and so made more tops than I could possibly hand quilt in my lifetime, but as I stitch them I can remember her laugh and the joy she had in making them. So yes meditation can take shape in many forms and not just from sitting.

    GREAT IDEA❣ I can't wait to try while sewing.
    I remember when I realized that I should meditate while doing something. I heard a chef say that that was what he did while preparing food. I began doing so, myself, while rinsing rice. Because it takes forever to rinse, it reminds me that there's always something to cleanse away from myself, and I should be patient and remain determined to continue on in order to achieve the best results. For me, this symbolism is actually for my belief that my sins can be washed away and my relationship with God strengthened.

    These everyday activities and the awareness of being in the moment like this is the way pre-Christian pagan European people of all European ethnic groups have practiced their native spirituality. They didn’t need to go to church to experience spirituality/divinity because their spirituality wasn’t separate from everyday life, it wasn’t separate from organic nature and life. To live life was to experience spirituality/divinity. That’s why they had gods and spirits for all forces of nature, for all plants and all life, as well as for all aspects of everyday life, and stages of a person’s life. I find this to be fascinating that our pagan European ancestors had their own version of animism. They were very in-tuned with their native lands, their local organic environments and ecosystems. So for all those that do not know pagan European cultures come from their own indigenous ancestors who lived no different from any other indigenous people around the world

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  5 місяців тому +1

      I’m an indigenous woman (Volga Tatar) and I very much agree. Volga Tatars originally practiced a form of shamanism called Tengrism, and as I’ve been diving more into the practices, they are incredibly similar to some of the organic nature and life oriented ones that I grew up practicing in Buddhism and other forms of spirituality.

      @@VBirchwood Thank you for replying and sharing your story. My mother’s entire family are from Rostov-on-Don, which is also where I was born and raised before we moved to USA. My mother descend from a line of Don Cossacks. My father’s whole family are Armenian, but unfortunately I’m not that familiar with my Armenian heritage as I am with my Slavic heritage. Both my mother’s and father’s people are branches on the Indo-European tree. I found that pretty much all Indo-European cultures had the same nature-based spirituality, traditions, and way of life. Yes they did practice a form of their own native shamanism which was part of their folk faith. In fact all pre-Christian/Abrahamic cultures around the world practiced a nature-based spirituality, but today we call it a collective name “paganism”. I also want to make a distinction between the modern-day Wiccans and other similar new age religions and the old-world historical paganism.

    This was really beautiful! Both visually and narratively. I've read that it can actually be dangerous for some people's mental health to try to literally not think anything at all. For most people it's harmless, if they can even do it, but for people whose psyche is not that stable to begin with, trying to turn your brain off can "short circuit" your consciousness and cause psychotic breaks.

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  Рік тому +2

      Thank you! Everyone of course needs to do what is best for them and what their doctor recommends. I also want to point out though that turning off your thoughts is not really possible. I think it’s a big misconception that meditation “turns your brain off.” We have little to no control over our thoughts, but they’re just thoughts. For example, try not to think of a pink elephant. I bet you did think of a pink elephant. The purpose of meditation is to just become a more present observer, a witness to the thoughts and feelings that do arise, and there are so many ways to achieve that.

    Wow, your channel has helped me see handstitching in a new light. Is it for historical authenticity or do you just prefer it? Although itd take a lot of patience, i feel like itd be a much richer, more peaceful experience. It frees you from having to be in a certain place. In a way, it frees you from the techology of sewing machines (which can sometimes be loud).

      Thank you so much!
      I just prefer it personally. I really have little desire to maintain historical accuracy, aside from in settings like reenactment etc. (which I don't even do haha) even though I'd say my own clothing does lean a lot more "historically accurate". I just really love how connected I feel to my garments with hand sewing and it's a much deeper practice for me beyond creating something wearable 😊

Cheers!

    Hi Vasi... great cinematics... I was just wondering, do you still create music?

      Thank you! I’m nearly done with an EP I started 4 or 5 years ago, but I’m just trying to save up a bit more money for the rest of its production. I’ve been living very paycheck to paycheck due to a high cost of living and some big life expenses that unexpectedly arose, so the EP hasn’t been a priority. I’m hoping by the end of the year I’ll be able to release it.

    By any chance the teachings from FPMT or Kopan Monastery? As this sounds like the teachings of Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

      They’re an amalgamation of many different teachings that I’ve learned over the years, Tonglen though of course is Tibetan Buddhist.

      I kind of got distracted, I was looking at hand sewing videos and tutorial on UA-cam and came across your channel, which you just coincidentally also uses sewing as a form of meditation.

    where do you get your patterns V. Birchwood?

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  Рік тому

      A bunch of places! Lately I’ve been utilising a book called “Making Working Women’s Dress,” some various free digital patterns I’ve found on Etsy, and a wrapper pattern by Laughing Moon. I’ve also been sewing my ethnic Tatar historical clothing, so for that I’ve been using diagrams in reference books and just draping directly on a dress form. In the past I’ve used “The Victorian Dressmaker” books by PriorAttire and also some Black Snail patterns.

    For me deep breathing and existing brings forth gratitude to the One I owe my existence to.
    "And YHWH God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." - Genesis 2:7
    Did you know that "spirit" in Hebrew is "ruach" which means "breath." He is "Ruach" and the more I talk with Him the more joyful I become. 🥰

    An interesting vlog, which is very Zen. There’s also echos of christian religious notions in that by labour you pray and contemplate the godhead. There is similarities between quaker silent worship and Buddhist and even general meditation, in that there’s a quietening period, a seeking , a stage of fidgeting and then the blissed out or communing latter episode

    There was a period of time i was doing daily guided meditations, and it helped so much to be present and open with myself and my surroundings! Having ADHD, I tend to dive into a lot of thought rabbit holes; my husband catches me spacing out pretty often 😅You showed and verbalized a lot of calming encouragements to be present and grateful. 🤍
    PS the colors changing from 3:06 was so beautiful! I can see your love of color grading come through :)
