  • This week we saw two massive indie rock outfits top the charts in the UK. Join me to look at how culture is shifting and how this could impact the British rock and roll scene.
    Is the revolution already underway?

So the next chapter in rebellious youth culture is being led by Ricky Gervais (aged 62), Dave Chappelle (aged 50), John Squire (aged 61), Liam Gallagher (aged 51), and Rick Witter (aged 51).
I believe this is what’s known as wishful thinking.

Yeah it would be more convincing if it was a bunch of new young people on the scene, like he says at the end we need a “next generation” to come through, until then the jury is out

The new Liam Gallagher and John Squire single actually charted at #16 on the main U.K. Singles Chart. When measuring the full success of a single release, that’s the chart that counts. Still, #16 is bloody good, considering.

The argument that physical sales are more representative is so stupid, bro. With all due respect, are people really listening to this new Shed 7 album? No, they are not. Being no 1 based almost exclusively on physical sales shows only that they have a fanbase willing to buy their music in the era of streaming. The number is very low also, they only sold 18k, and only around 400 of album equivalent units are from streaming - which means people are not really listening. It's great for their stats, but it does not mean the masses are listening to this type of music again.

I don't really know what you're talking about here James, due to the way albums charts are compiled, there's a new number 1 every week and rock bands regularly top it as streaming is weighted very little there and far more people buy physical albums than physical singles. On the physical singles charts, Just Another Rainbow is like Liam's 5th or 6th number one and in streaming the song did very poorly. When bands like Shed Seven or the gallaghers start to do well on the UK Singles Charts, that's a sign of change until then, this is the same as always. And as for what you said about the Main albums and Singles charts, I disagree, since so little music is bought, Streaming is how you actually determine what is popular, and as a matter of fact Sales are already weighted extremely heavily when compared with streams. This is shown by how Lewis Capaldi got his song Pointless to number 1 for a single week last year off the back of a CD push and then the single crashed right back out the top 10, the following week.

Yeah i dont see any relevant change either. Its a minor victory for the band, but it will fade very quickly and most fans only seem to be interested in the nostalgia of these bands.....but this video offers an 'angle' on potential change that's all i see - i think there's little substance to be found? We shall see eh?

I'm Australian and after watching this vid did some digging on Shed Seven. I'd sadly never heard of them until now. And I am blown away by them. Have listened to a bunch of banging tunes last night by them and now hooked. They have a great back catalogue and the new stuff is great, like Kissing California. Brilliant band and I am so happy for them for their current success. They bloody well deserve it.

James, as usual I agree. Comedy is the last bastion of punk rock. Unfortunately, the idea that music can change, I believe, is a thing of the past. The problem is that there is no longer a record industry. What little there is left is concerned more with reissues and greatest hits of legacy acts than breaking new acts. Acts think in songs to download instead of singles with A/B sides and no one thinks of albums. I feel this is a huge loss to culture. But what I feel is a bigger loss is we are now going on the third generation of kids that don't hate their parent's music. Most kids are happy to go back and rediscover the Beatles/Stones/Pistols/Oasis/Whomthefuckever and this is more of a blight on creativity than anything. Britpop, which I think was the last true movement in rock music, was also a bunch of people taking their influences and creating something current, but not "new". For there ever to be a cultural movement again like this, there has to be a uniform culture. Due to social media, everyone is a rock star in their own mind. It used to be that a new record by the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Smiths were a cultural event. That just doesn't happen anymore. That said, I will hunt down independent and self-released British guitar band records until the end of time. Rant over. Hey You Kids, Get Outta My Yard! And NO, you can't have your ball back!

I think there will be an indie revival very soon.
There will be a new band or group of bands with aggressive but danceable rhythm (think Kasabian at their best), cool attitude and classic melodic sing along tunes. There will be identifiable clothing that is stylish but no brands.
I'm imagining the next music revolution will begin with a young good looking band who become popular on the festival scene.
There's very few indie nightclubs now but a massive audience for festivals which is the opposite of the late 80s early 90s

Didn't Blur' "The Ballad Of Darren" go to #1? The Manics "Ultra Vivid Lament" also got to #1 and that was a 14th album for a band that have existed since 1986. I am happy for all these bands including Shed Seven. I've always wanted a change of charts for years because I am sick to death of seeing Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, RnB rubbish topping the charts and taking over radio. I want music to speak to me again when I turn on the radio.

It should be noted that streaming counts towards the chart-placing. Does anyone know how many streams equate to one sale unit? It has totally changed things, though. If you look at the album chart, you’ll notice ABBA Gold, etc. It’s there - nearly constantly - through folk streaming individual tracks from it.

On singles the ratio is 1:100 for paid streaming like Apple music and 400:1 with Ad funded streaming. With albums that number is 1000:1 and 4000:1 respectively but with some additional weighting rules to cut that down if only one or two songs are getting most of the streams

There have been British indie rock albums at the top end of the charts for a couple of years now (e.g. Inhaler, Sam Fender, Fontaines DC & Wet Leg) but it's great to see it continue and inspire younger bands to rise. There is a slight skew in the figures nowadays due to the propensity for artists to offer autographed or signed editions of the CD and occasionally Vinyl releases. The numbers of these are quite large but limited and scalpers tend to purchase multiple copies to resell on auction websites pushing the record up the charts. The last Kylie album got a number one placing helped not only by CD and Vinyl enthusiasts, but also autograph hunters, memorabilia collectors and resellers. If there had not been vinyl and CD bundles with a 12×12″ signed lithograph option and signed CDs offered by hmv and townsend records I wonder if the album would have topped the chart? Shed Seven have had a signed album on pre-order for at least six months - which I purchased a signed CD and signed vinyl many months ago - all of those pre-orders are included in the first weeks placing - it's all good news, but once freebies (e.g. 3 different coloured cassettes) and signed merch are not allowed to be given away with album purchases we will see the true picture of where Rock music sits in the music landscape... keep up the great videos :)

Not really reflective of “popular music” though still is it. Streaming is unfortunately the true reflection of the times. Sales charts are going o reflect more indie music because indie leans more toward physical especially with vinyl.
Also, naming the current movement “woke cancel culture”, as someone “on the ground” is absolutely stupid. Most of us kids don’t give a flying fuck about cancelling people, and music really isn’t shit at all. There’s loads of good stuff if you actually want to look for it.

It‘s great for Shed Seven to top the charts! Although I‘m not sure if the charts are still relevant to younger people like they were back in them days. But I don‘t buy the whole political thing about a cultural change - if Tory cabinet members are talking about the “war on wokeness“, then it´s certainly not rock`n`roll to be anti-“woke“, is it? Besides, some of the best bands of the past decades had been woke in today‘s parlance (The Beatles, Sun Ra, The Clash, The Jam, X-Ray Spex, Manics, Super Furry Animals, Asian Dub Foundation, etc.), so nothing wrong with that (“woke“ is simply another term for being aware of social problems). And Gervais and Chappelle are relics of another era, who‘ve done nothing interesting for 20 years. Seeing has-beens like them as the torchbearers of a new cultural movement is to me the equivalent of saying Cliff Richard`s comeback in the late 1970s was punk. The real problem of the past decade was guitar bands copying each other and not coming up with something exciting. Many also had good prospects, but weren‘t consistent over a longer period of time, which had a lot to do with massive changes in the industry due to the rise of streaming.
But I agree that the younger generation desperately needs their own bands. Comebacks like Shed Seven are a great gateway to discover older bands (like I did when Echo & The Bunnymen returned to the charts in the late 1990s), but it`s always the new bands that define an era. Speaking of which: recent guitar bands that got me hooked in the past years include Wet Leg, Porridge Radio, Tropical Fuck Storm and Jetstream Pony. Generally, the real action is now the live circuit. With bands making less money on record sales or streaming, playing live is still the real deal. If we want to measure the popularity of younger bands, we shouldn‘t look on record sales, but on the attendance at gigs and festivals.

When I was a teenager (yes, the 90s😂), you weren’t more than 10m from another guitarist. I don’t really come across any young people who play now. The thing is James, and I say this as a big fan of your content - 'woke' isn't a music genre... it's simply a term that reflects on a few societal movements away from certain accepted norms. 'Woke' isn't harming music, or anyone... it isn't affecting music at all. It's really just a term that is used in a pejorative sense by people who DON'T want change.
Cancel Culture is something COMPLETELY different and is very dangerous, I agree, but again, it isn't affecting music in the slightest.
In fact, far more explicit music is getting into the charts than ever... it's just that this music isn't what you seem to listen to or enjoy.
Indie bands are not unpopular because of Cancel Culture, or 'wokeness', indeed, they NEVER do or really did anything truly controversial - and certainly not by today's standards.
What is it that you think rock stars are unable to say? Liam, for example, was a supporter of BLM, doesn't seemingly hold any particularly out there political views and he is the most 'gobby' and controversial of the guitar music stars. Who else do you think is being muzzled by wokeness and what is it they'd be saying...?
And further still,if you take a step back and look at it objectively, Shed 7 and Liam and Squire (all middle aged men who are already famous) topping charts is probably very unlikely a signal of an 'underground uprising' - and I say this a HUGE fan of those artists.
Straight ahead, guitar rock may make a comeback, or, more likely, experience 'waves' of comeback, but I think it's incredibly unlikely that it will ever become the dominant narrative medium again in youth culture music - which is what any genre needs to do in order to really affect culture from the ground up.
Popular music is dictated by, and reflects, the technological stage of any culture - there are sometimes moments of retro revival, but generally, any 'musical revolution' is firmly rooted in reflecting the culture and technology prevalent in the given time.
The reality is that Grime was a genuine British underground revolution and (easily) the closest thing to punk we've seen, and that was quite recent (though even that is now 'dated'). It isn't strictly white boys with guitars playing '60's informed guitar pop (which, again, I LOVE), but the fact is, that image is relevant to a time that doesn't exist anymore.
There is contemporary, offensive, forward looking music being made left, right and centre - it just doesn't seem that you're hearing it.
    Much Love, a fan x

True that! Speaking of grime, my impression is that what older guys like me saw as “rock’n’roll lifestyle“ can now only be found among the dance underground scenes.

Things tend to go in cycles alright. The 60's and 90's were very similar. The noughties and 70's were kind of similar as were the 80's and 2010's. WE are due another 60's/90's in this cycle. Not an indie band, but just recently discovered this band ua-cam.com/video/jIMAkM2ITIY/v-deo.html Kind of like a pink floyd/muse space rock thing going on. Worth a look. The end section is mad trippy sounding.

Great video - Although people REALLY need to stop using Rotten Tomatoes as any kind of barometer. The critics score is useful as those views are COLLECTED from a wide range of published sources. The audience score is useless, as it depends entirely on people SUBMITTING scores directly to the site. Dave Chappel fans are much more likely to submit scores, whereas the vast, vast majority of casual Netflix watchers are not going to submit -whatever they thought of his special.

Sadly this is nothing new, indie and rock bands have had big hitting albums for years. Then they drop out of the top 75 the following week. Also the sales are a fraction of what they were in the 90s. Indie and rock has always been popular but it just doesn't work against streaming where constant plays of the same songs make hits. We don't listen to music in that way. I hope you are right though but who are these non-woke bands, when we have bands like Slaves, sorry Soft Play, and Idles who are both super woke for two.

James.. society is too fractured and there are far too many options for the people to unite behind a new movement. Yes there will be much chnage.. but will anybody lift up their heads to notice. I live in manchester. There is a new music buzz going on.. but its from 60 different genres !
Free/streamed music has changed the value that consumers give to music... there is no NME or top of the pops that EVERYONE reads or watches. You have to understand..ROCK N ROLL NEVER WAS REBEL.MUSIC. ITS CORPORATE AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN = RAGE ON BEHALF OF THE MACHINE.

Good for Shed Seven, but having literally the same bands from 30 years ago do well in a now meaningless chart is not some sort of cultural shift. How many people under 40 bought that Shed Seven record, nevermind how many under 30s or 20s? Sorry James, but I don't think there's no big guitar bands around because they can't openly slate trans people or whatever. Gervais's last special was awful and only popular because his audience imagines it offends the 'wokes'. Believe me, show most of his audience something like 'Deadbeat Hero' by Doug Stanhope and they couldn't handle it. Gervais is 'punk', hmm, no. sorry. In terms you would understand it's like when Robbie Williams did Britpop and we all saw his fans as clueless about 'real' music. Do you think the genuine cutting edge comedians are getting massive Netflix deals? Everything he does is a watered down more palatable version of superior acts. "Ooh this next bit is offensive", no it's not Ricky.
