  • Plast-O-Matic Valves' Andy Ryan describes the use and function of a normally-closed, 2-port "relief/backpressure" valve at the downstream end of a closed loop piping system. The valve is used to regulate backpressure, so that the system will maintain a desired, pre-set pressure to points of use.

    Nice love these explanations!

why can the bypass valve not be used in place of the backpressure valve to control return flow and thus backpressure?

Hi jsohn, thanks for your interest. The valve Andy is describing does all of these things: Relief, bypass, pump bypass, backpressure, anti-siphon -- Series RVDT performs all of those functions because they are all based on upstream pressure, or backpressure. In other words, our bypass valve is a backpressure valve. Andy is simply calling it different things based on what it is required to do in the application. Here is a technical brief that may help clarify: plastomatic.com/technical-article/introduction-to-reliefbypassbackpressure-valves/
