  • Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Dark Matter Season 1
Maybe in an alternate reality there are more Dark Matter episodes, but for our world, Season 1 of the epic Apple TV+ sci-fi series has come to a close. Now that all nine episodes are available to stream, the show's stars, Joel Edgerton (The Gift) and Alice Braga (Queen of the South), join Collider's Steve Weintraub to look back on their characters' journeys throughout this season, the choices they made, and where they end up. As we lean into Season 2, they also chat about how fans of author and showrunner Blake Crouch's book may still have some surprises in store.
Dark Matter Season 1 introduced viewers to the characters of Crouch's many worlds, and for fans of the novel, it brought them to life with a stacked cast including Oscar-winner Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld), Dayo Okeniyi (See), and Oakes Fegley (The Fabelmans). We explored different realities with Jason Dessen (Edgerton) and Amanda Lucas (Braga) as they boldly fought to find Jason's original Earth to reunite with his family. In the end, Jason does find his way home (or so we're led to believe), while Amanda chooses to part ways and make the best of the life she has.
As any good season finale does, Dark Matter leaves us with unanswered questions and an appetite for what's to come. In this interview, Edgerton and Braga dissect their characters' decisions, theorize with us on who really walked through that door in the end, and tease what the focus of Season 2 will be. In addition to this and what surprises lay in store for book fans, they share what they'd do if they had access to the box, and Edgerton talks about joining the "greatest show on earth," Bluey.

This is the best show right now. So real. Their acting was insane. Especially Joel. Loved every bit of it.

This show is an incredible take on alternate realities, and I'm so here for multiple seasons. When Amanda decided to stay in that world, I was almost in tears because they had such a lovely connection together. Shoutout to Alice and Joel for such an amazing experience, and Apple for taking such big swings with Science fiction.

Wonderful interview with Joel & Alice. I'm glad to see she's up for more Amanda Adventures--since, like you, I clearly got the impression from your interview with Blake that if there is a season2, it will focus on Amanda & Ryan.
BTW, you said that it was JFK on the money that Daniela found in the storage locker--it's RFK on the money. Which suggests in one of the worlds that Jason2 visited, that RFK lived to become President.
Finally, on the "money" question: I'm glad Alice & Joel asked the writers the question--and were told that there is money in their travel bags. That's the answer that I had come up with several weeks ago. More, specifically, I decided it was Gold Coins, or diamonds. They can easily get coins or diamonds converted to the money of the universe they're in.
Again, thanks for the interview. AND, I hope Appletv+ announces a second season--and the cast comes to SD ComicCon at the end of July, because I'll be there; and would love for there to be a Panel with "Dark Matter" cast & writers.

I thought they had jumped the shark in episode 8. But seeing how it ended and episode 9, they redeemed it. This series blew me away.

I love the performances from all the main cast in this show. Great to see multidimensional sci-fi back on TV in a big way once again. It was one extra thing that had me looking forward to Wednesday night TV. Add to this the huge social media presence where you could go chat and speculate with other viewers after each episode. The book readers seem to be very happy with the finished product too. This is my favourite type of sci-fi and it works out well for TV as the same cast can play multiple versions of the same characters. Apple TV+ has another sci-fi hit. Thanks to Blake Crouch assisting with the TV adaptation of his work and Apple TV+/Sony Pictures TV for working with him. Great work all around. I am hoping for another season but if it ends here I am happy with the way it ended. Time to explore the book.

Note: You can never return to the world you left when you entered the box , every time you exit the box universes branch. It is why none of the volunteers from Jason 2's original world never returned.

I think the alt $20 bill is RFK, not JFK.

every new Jason created means a new universe was created, so there should be many universes with Daniela and Charlie waiting for the right Jason. and I think Jason and Amanda had some gold and diamonds in their bags, instead of money.

I wondered why the many different Jasons form all those different realities came to Jason #1's world by the end. They all seemed to be trying to get back to their realities, and wanting to get home to THEIR OWN Daniela and Charlie, but all those Jasons wound up in Jason #1's reality instead. It's dramatically and visually cool, but I don't get the show's/book's internal logic behind it.

Because they all branched off from the original Jason. Remember the bar scene with the original Jason and the alt-Jason when the original says:
"A month ago, we were the exact same person, thinking the exact same thoughts, saying the exact same things."
So, in essence, Daniela and Charlie ARE their own Daniela and Charlie because their memories and experiences of them originated with the original Jason.

Stop being cynical. Even the author and director said it's Jason Prime. It's not Rick and Morty trying to test you. The only reason I feel your thinking that is so you can feel you've figured out some secret about the show

You should have asked them the biggest theory - Jason 2 & everyone he takes with him he takes the drug while being outside the box & that's why there is no Jason 2's infinite versions nor anyone he takes with him (ryan, Leighton etc). But always jason 1 & Amanda took the drug after getting into the box. So where are amanda's copies?😂

Dark matter may be different from a lot of bad sci fi but it’s not so different from the great classic sci -fi. Most great classic sci fi is all about challenging the edge of science and humanity.
