I bought a police trade-in P226 last year in nearly mint condition. The finish is in great shape, the action is tight, and the night sights still have a lot of life left in them.
Sigs are expensive. I've seen some smoking deals on police trade in models. My friend got his first handgun, a p226 9mm for $380 out the door. Grips were crap but another $50 fixed that.
Speaking as a guy who's motto is "so many guns so little money " I've owned sig p220's and even a Beretta or two. I still have a model 10 Smith. They have all been worth the money.
I bought a used N.M. State Police S&W 686 .357 magnum 25 years ago & its still shoots like a new one! But here's a twist to the story....when my brother who was a N.M.S.P officer at the time I purchased my revolver, retired 15 years later,bought his service revolver- also a S& W686 .357magnum...when we got together & compared serial numbers...the two revolvers were only one serial number off...evidently the revolver I bought from a dealer, was sold to the dealer by one of my brothers senior officers that retired several years before my brother- but had been in the same academy class.
You’re absolutely right Sheriff! Law Enforcement weapons are 200 to 300 rounds a year. Carried more than anything. I recently purchased my Glock 21 I carried for at least 10 years but it is right at 20 years old. Paid just over 400 for it but it recently had a new set of night sights put on before the change over to a Shadow Systems 9mm. My old Glock 21 never failed me but like Sheriff Oller said these firearms usually aren’t 100% appearance but are by no means worn out ! If you’re happy with the price I’d say get it and enjoy ! 🇺🇸⚡️TCB⚡️🇺🇸
With a few older, LE duty guns & indoor range used; I added new Glock barrels or KKM, with new night sights & Cerakote Elite. Slide. I tried a few sights since the 1990s & in 2024 I'd highly suggest the Trijicon HD orange night sights. Robust, easy to see, use. Glock factory 🇦🇹 Ameriglos are decent too.
Police trade ins are a great value. I have a Glock 22, Beretta 96 (the most worn of the bunch), SIG P226 and a Smith M&P 45. The Smith needed new mag followers, but thats it.
The supply of LEO surplus handguns seems to have dried up. Can't speak for semi-autos because I never bought any but several S&W Model 10s and 64s worked perfectly and were accurate. The blued S&W Model 10s had holster wear but no appreciable mechanical wear. I only shoot standard pressure .38 Special ammo in them.
I have a Model 10 that was carried by a police officer in the early 70's, and that gun eats +P ammo like candy. Also has a wonderfully smooth trigger pull.
Smith and Wesson doesn’t recommend any +P ammunition in the .38 Special unless stamped on the barrel or frame. I have seen 640 models tested for +P+ made in the 90’s. My department issued Winchester +P LSWCHP in the S&W 64. The revolvers started to have timing issues after 1000 rounds. The range officers believe the reason stemmed from officers dry firing the revolvers as taught in the initial training at the Academy. Smith and Wesson said excessive use of +P ammunition will cause end shake and timing issues.
@@boostimalaka1 No reason to use +P unless it is stamped on the revolver, and then only for self defense. Practice with standard velocity ammo to reduce wear and tear on the gun. That's what our armory guys did and recommended for our personal guns.
@@PassivePortfolios The service ammunition was +P and in common use in Law Enforcement. All issued equipment required factory ammunition, no reloads. I wouldn’t use a steady diet of + P or .357 Magnum in a J or K frame Smith and Wesson.
My first Glock is a police trade in Gen 3 mod 17. Problem free and good finish with night sights for around 340. I also purchased a Baretta mod 81 for 200.00 in very good condition. A very nice shooting pistol. Love them both.
My favorite police trade-in is a Colt New Service in .45 Colt, but I don't suppose that handguns traded in 75 years ago really fit in this context...My M-1917 ex-postal inspector Smith is pretty sweet, too.
I have a Glock 31 police trade in... came with really good holosun night sights, but the rear needed to be knocked a little, was pulling left... squeaky when the slide is racked, even lubed nice, but functions flawlessly!
Back in 1972 I turned 21 so wanted to buy my first center fire handgun. I went to A little gun shop and asked if he had any 357 magnum for sale he went in the and came out with a colt Python he said it was a trade in from the Kimono IN. PD HR thought it was carried more than it was fire. It had a lot of blue wear but everything else was fine. I took it to a gunsmith and had it replied and have had ever sense. It has the best action of any revolver I ever had. I looked up the serial number it was made in 1964.
I'm looking for a Glock police trade in. I just haven't found the one I want yet. I have no problem with used guns. I also had a Beretta 92FS I purchased new. It was in the safe and had not fired it in over 12 years. It didn't have a scratch on it. I gave it to my brother as he is a licensed armed security officer. He qualified with it and now carries it on the job. They are great guns! I'm sure it's all scratched now too!

I have an 870 Police Magnum. I have a friend that buys a LOT of police trade ins, he and I have shot them nothing wrong with them. My Police Magnum is a sweet shotgun for sure. My friends father was a Game Warden YEARS ago, my friend still has his father's .38 that his father had when he was a Game Warden, it still shoots fine.
Glock 22 trade ins can be had for affordable prices from AIM surplus and GT distributors, ive also become a fan of .40 Night sights on mine are a bit faded but your milage may vary.
A thousand times in their life, what? Average person lives 77 years. If you started shooting at 10 years old ( average) , that's less than 17 rounds per year. Uhh I'm calling B.S. on that.
I got a 92 trade in via private party sale for $300. He failed to tell me the firing pin was broken, but the darn thing still worked. I bought a replacement firing pin and it's been great ever since. I guess he didn't know how to change it out.
my 92 is actually made in Italy and bought well before the US military brought them in for trials. Love is all except the magazine button which is located at the bottom of the grip.
I own 3 LE trade-ins and all are Glocks. A G17, G22 and G21. All are great. Two are worn on the outside but perfectly broken in on the inside. Carried a lot, shot some. The third is like new -that's the 21. I guess the 45 ACP was too much for them and it just stayed in inventory until being traded in ha ha ha. Uh.... Seriously, the prices were all in the low $300's. What a bargain!
I own a few used Glocks & in the past bought a NYPD un issued GPNY .38spl revolver, 2000s. 2 of my Glocks have a few up grades: night sights, Cerakote Elite, Tango Down mag release/slide stop. MilSpin Back Plate, KKM match barrels. Glock 22: 9mm, .357sig .
I own 2 Glock 23 a gen 3 and 4 police trades and 1 Glock 19 gen 3 police trade. Glocks are incredibly difficult to wear out. The 19 looked like it had several hundred if not a thousand + when I bought it, I’ve since put nearly 10,000 rounds more through it and it’s flawless. My 23 gen 3 is my daily carry for the last 4 years with 2000 rounds from myself and who knows how many it had before but to is flawless and accurate. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another police trade.
Bought three Glock 17 LEO trade-ins 20 years ago. I've had to replace things like a mag release spring that was badly rusted and broke, but they are great.
My former Service Weapon was a Glock 19-3. Was a factory refab and was an NYPD issue. Its been on my hip for over 20 years, and although retired, on call in Wifey's night stand. Great gun.
We rarely squandered money on "overpriced" gear. Our suppliers sold us name brand quality equipment well below retail and some LE pricing straight from the manufacturer was below wholesale. I know Glock Firearms was a STRONG supporter of our agencies when I was a department Firearms and Academy instructor. Safariland as well when supplying duty gear.
Great video! Several years ago, I bought 3 Rem 870 Police Magnums for $249 each. Some 'duty' wear but great mechanical condition. Got a Glock 22 for $279. My FFL (also a cop) said it "appears unissued." IMHO, many (most) police trade-ins are little used but show surface (usually holster) wear. Night sights may be dead. Functionally, they are great deals! My Beretta 92 is a trade-in, but I don't remember the price. $ was similar to my other purchases.
When I was a deputy in the very early 90s, we were issued the Beretta 92s. I loved that shooter plus our training Lt. was a certified Beretta armorer. He kept our stuff functioning like they should. I eventually bought a new in the box 92 for $450.00 at a gun dealer I knew well and bought many guns from.
Most police trade-in guns will have holster wear, but will function fine and were probably inspected by an armorer every year. I bought 2 of the 3 handguns we "changed" from, the 686 and the Glock 22, I had carried. I did not get the 4046, because it was a terrible design double action only automatic. Interestingly, I carried the same shotgun, Rem 870 Magnum, for 28 years. The stock was a bit rough from its long ride, but if they had wanted to sell it to me for half the cost of new - take my money now! It was a great shooter. The pistols were about half the cost of new, and in my case their use and or abuse was known firsthand, so were a great bargain. I had some mannequins I used to do el Presidente drills with in my revolver days. I always used full magnum ammo, because that what one SHOULD be carrying when SHTF occurs, for those drills. They finally became unusable, but no faster than if using wadcutters. That was the only upside to autos as the "target" ammunition had to be about the same power as the duty ammo, in order to make the gun function, so the recoil was not dissimilar during traing and scores were more realistic. Multiple targets should always be a part of training, but generally is not done agencywide because of $.
BEWARE.....a police trade in excellent shape is a good buy as it was carried and used little. If you see one with lots of wear on the outside that means it was used as a range gun and shot to shit so avoid.
Magazines can be an issue. They have been left loaded for long periods and shaken a million steps. I have posted a video of bad feed lips on an old Glock magazine. Also, my ffl has a G21 with pink nail polish on it where the deputy tried to do color inlay. It’s sad looking. 😅
Most duty issued guns are in good shape appearance wise and work (for annual requalification). The rough guns are the ones that came from the training unit or used at the police academy.
I have a police trade-in G22. Worst shooting Glock I ever had!! Sent it in. Came back better but not great. I changed the barrel and it shoots as good as my G35 now. ❤❤
I purchased a Glock 45ACP and a Sig P226 in 40 S&W. Both looked they never were carried. Great price value relationship. My son also purchased a Glock 21SF, in had some slide finish, but another great value
I own four police trade-in handguns: S&W Model 65, 10 and a 4586 and a Glock 19 gen 3. Sort of. My S&W Model 65 and Model 4586 were carried by my dad when he was an Idaho State Police trooper. He bought the M65 when ISP switched to the 4586 in 91 and it was gifted to him when he retired. I own a S&W M10 nickel plated 5" barrel that was once owned by the Detroit PD. I own a Glock 19 that was issued to me new back in 2006 and I purchased it when my agency switched over the Gen 5 Glock Model 45 in 2020. Not a true trade-in because I was the only officer to ever carry it, but it had to be sold to me by an FFL so for a couple weeks it sat in the arms room until the paperwork was done. Regardless I've never seen any trade-ins that weren't mechanically sound. Same with the milsurp guns that are in my safe.
I bought the Mode 64 I was issued out of the Academy when we transitioned to the Glock 22 .40 Caliber as our new service weapon. I also added a 2" Model 64 that was a carry gun in the safe, one of five for the Chief or Sergeants in plain clothes. All the revolvers were refurbished by Smith and Wesson prior to being released to the officers, or to the FFL Dealer who handled the transfer of our Glocks. Five years later, I bought my Glock 22, when we downsized to the Glock 23. Glock reconditioned the Glock 22s then returned them to those officers who purchased theirs, or to the FFL to sell to the public. I shot PPC, so my guns were shot a LOT, but few officers shot as much. Some ONLY shot when Required for training or qualification. We held open range days once a month, and provided ammo and coaching throughout the day. We rarely had more than a half dozen show, usually the same ones every month.
My second pistol purchase was a gun my wife picked out. It was a used HK P2000 9 mm, date code says it is a 2012 model LEM V2 version. Never heard of HK guns. But my wife liked the way it fit her hand. Too me it hurt to fire it. It had the XL back strap and 2 13 round magazines. Ordered a medium back strap and it feels great to shoot and very dependable. With the right leather holster it is one of my 2 EDC guns.
I have a hard time recommending the recent police trade in to new shooters since theyre almost all in .40. The price of ammo and the increased recoil being the reasons. My dad recently decided he wanted a semi auto for road trips and has always been a .357 mag guy. Has a 4" stainless Colt Python and a 4" blued Ruger Security Six. Rarely uses .38 special in them. Has no faith in 9mm, hence why .38 special is rarely used in the wheelguns. Also is not impressed with .45 acp due to not getting any real capacity advantages in the guns he likes. Which are ones not made of plastic. He loves my beretta m9a1 but not the caliber. We found him a beretta 96 centurion police trade in perfect shape for $350. Got some 13rd mecgar mags and after shooting .357 mag the .40 s&w was easy enough on him from the recoil and price of ammo perspective. Keeps it loaded with 135gr Corbon. There is definitely a place for them. One thing i will add about police trade in guns is that if you can not for some reason really test the gun the way you should with any carry gun the chance of it feeding JHP ammo is really high. The guns are traded in on the standard of a very artificial service life. My brothers department gets new guns every 5 years and that is way more common than not.
not quite a police trade-in but couple years ago I picked up a US Army World War II service 1911 pistol. This was the real deal from the CMP. now that thing was beat to hell but it was in complete working condition even with the new barrel from the mid 80s. I believe the gun was made in 1944. Some people see scratches I see character and history. It’s all a part of the story of that tool.
Police generally buy lowest common denominator guns because many cops have zero experience or interest in guns and need a 9 pound trigger with a 3/4" pull to help prevent negligent discharges. My county (Cochise County, AZ) allows cops a preference to choose any piece they want if they don't like the mush trigger abominations they are issued. I assume all the cops with a choice handgun are good shooters, and the others ... not so much. I used to belong to a shooting club back in Alaska that was used for annual shooting quals by the local police. It seemed like there were no "average" shooters among them. They were either absolute dead-on 10 ring shooters out to 25 yards, or shockingly bad sprayers that had to keep repeating to even stay in the black to qualify for another year. Those outstanding shooters were regulars at the range, hell, the department gave them free ammo so why wouldn't all of them be at this indoor range on a winter day off? Sorry. Long way to say LE guns are chosen to reduce lawsuits and training costs and may not be ideal for dedicated shooters.
It is a good idea to see the firearm in person before buying it. If it has been factory refurbished, it is probably great. As stated in the video, they will have signs of holster wear. You do want to make sure that the frame mates with the slide and slides easily without binding. Cop guns (and security guards) may have issues where the frame and slide have been stressed too much by the holster wear and getting in and out of the patrol car. But if the slide mates to the frame, you are good. If you have any issues with feeding or failure to extract, buy a brand new quality magazine, and try again. After that, if you still have some issues, get a new oem replacement spring kit. I had a glock that started developing feeding and extracting problems. A new standard weight spring kit made it perform like new. If that doesn't work, call Glock and get an RMA. They can fix (or replace) it.
My experience with my two trade ins is that they looked bad and shot fantastically. One of them is pathetic looking (I had to clean it multiple times after picking it up from my FFL, who shook his head and wished me luck) and it's the gun that I shoot best with. The other shoots great, too. It looks worn, but it's not terrible looking. I did get the sights replaced on that one. But who cares about the looks when the price is good and they shoot great?
I had a trade in glock 22 and had the same experience. You could see the wear from the kydex holster but you could tell it wasn’t fired to death. I sold it a few years later but that’s mostly cause glocks don’t fit my hand well and the gen 3 trigger was nothing to write home about.it’s a great way to save money. You would be better off buying a buy back or trade in whatever then buying a cheaper brand of pistol for sure.
I have many used cop guns. I have several glocks that are trade ins because most depts are going to 9mm in my state.And they all shoot great. only shot once a year. My old dept gave us 50rds a month to shoot most never got them.I got 2 870 police shotguns last year 187 each.
i got a police trade in beretta 92fs very minor finish wear, touched it up and looks good, it was made in 1999, so it still has metal controls on it. great shooting gun.
It depends on the gun and the department. Doc guns can be great or bad. I would not want on off tge quilfation range. One on post are handled alot and are going to have marks on them but they may have not been shot much. The ones in tge control room might never leave tge safe. The other department i work at. The officer had to supply there own handgun.
I like the trade in's. They are shot very little (usually), not well taken care of (usually). By the time they are traded the defects have shown up and were fixed.
Blued firearms that one has became discontent with the finish is a an easy fix. Strip it down, place all the blued metal in distilled vinegar for a few hours and the bluing will be gone. Put on some latex gloves, degrease it with alcohol and reblue. I like going the hot blue route with Brownells products. Once bluing is done, coat everything well with oil and let it sit for about 24 hours. I’ve done a few long guns that way and they turned out great!
The Glock 23 being my favorite gun of all time, I have bought several police trade ins and each one was excellent! Granted they apparently never clean them as they were always covered in lint and grime but a complete strip and ultrasonic cleaning and they come out looking near brand new.
Back in the day, I came across an S&W model 10-5 that was never issued out. The revolver didn't have a mark on it, and I picked it up for $275. I also have my kids' older duty sidearm. It's an S&W m&p40 that he bought back and gave to me. I love when cops hand out free guns!😂👍🇺🇲
I also had a S&W model 10-5. It was my grandfathers he had purchased used. It had scratches and holster wear. He kept it as a home defense gun. When he passed, I received a couple of his guns and let my brother pick which one he wanted. It was only fair... He chose the Smith 10-5. Can't blame him! lol
Don't recall and not near a computer. I just used Google and searched up "police trade in guns for sale" and it threw all sorts of different websites at me. I looked at dozens, so not sure I could find it back. Was a P226DAK.
The police trades can be great deals. I bought dozens of the trade-ins back in the day when everybody went to plastic 9mm and they were CHEAP. All metal, mostly .40S&W(which is a fine caliber btw)and often DAO which I actually prefer. Bought 92d and 96D, Beretta Cougar 8040D and a literal ton of DAO 3rd gen S&Ws(5946, 4046, 4053, etc). Each one an all metal reliable pistol for $200-250 with the .40s generally at the lower end of that range. Actually, for anything other than carry I'd say the .40 is preferable,.....and there is also such a thing as 'police trade-in' ammo too. Just picked up 2k rds of factory .40S&W HST for under 20 cents per rd and 1k of .357SIG HST for under $0.45 delivered to my door. When departments switch guns to go to 9mm they have stocks of their former duty ammo to get rid of as well. .40 HST for less than the price of cheap 9mm practice ammo? Yeah, it's still worth having a few .40s around.
I’ve bought 4 over the years. 2 Glock 22’s and 2 S&W M&P’s. All 4 are great guns and function perfectly. Internally they look as if they were seldom fired.
They're traded as surplus property to whatever dealer they buy new guns from and the new guns are discounted by the amount allowed for the trade. The dealer can then resell them. Every state has some method for disposal of surplus property.
I've had a model 15-3 combat masterpiece that was a police trade in for years, it's damn near mint, looked new when I bought it, the KCPD here won plenty of gunfights with them so I know it'll do fine as a nightstand gun stoked with FBI load.
I bought a Mossburg 500 that rode around in the trunk of a security vehicle for 10 years. It had those plastic/rubber replacement stock and forend, 18 and a half inch barrel improved cylinder. Holds 8 21/2 in. Shells. And has sling swivels. The receiver had lost all its finish as did the barrel. $100 .That was 40 years ago. Still going strong with no problems. It looks rough but functions perfectly. I even shot skeet with it and won to get a new porch enclosed with vinyl siding for free .

LEO trade ins can be some of the best deals you can get for a handgun. A surprising number of them are unfired or have a very low round count.

Mod 10, steel guns can eat +P's with no issues. Older models before 1950's, maybe use non +P. Be safe do what you want.

I bought a Smith Model 10 police trade in and a smith model 59 police trade in. love them both. they still work.

Awesome, I want a python as well but my budget won't allow for it.

I'm looking for a Glock police trade in. I just haven't found the one I want yet. I have no problem with used guns. I also had a Beretta 92FS I purchased new. It was in the safe and had not fired it in over 12 years. It didn't have a scratch on it. I gave it to my brother as he is a licensed armed security officer. He qualified with it and now carries it on the job. They are great guns! I'm sure it's all scratched now too!
I've purchased a couple of 9's in the past. Didn't let a little holster wear stop me from buying them.

They only qualify with them twice a year..most are finish issues from holster wear.
I have an 870 Police Magnum. I have a friend that buys a LOT of police trade ins, he and I have shot them nothing wrong with them. My Police Magnum is a sweet shotgun for sure. My friends father was a Game Warden YEARS ago, my friend still has his father's .38 that his father had when he was a Game Warden, it still shoots fine.
Glock 22 trade ins can be had for affordable prices from AIM surplus and GT distributors, ive also become a fan of .40 Night sights on mine are a bit faded but your milage may vary.
As a retired cop our trade-ins are normally a good deal. They’re only shot for qualification twice a year, inspected regularly & well maintained.

I got a 92 trade in via private party sale for $300. He failed to tell me the firing pin was broken, but the darn thing still worked. I bought a replacement firing pin and it's been great ever since. I guess he didn't know how to change it out.
That Berretta looks fantastic. I guess holster wear doesn’t bother me. Also. Cheap beat up gun with no collector value? Cerakote without guilt.

my 92 is actually made in Italy and bought well before the US military brought them in for trials. Love is all except the magazine button which is located at the bottom of the grip.
I own 3 LE trade-ins and all are Glocks. A G17, G22 and G21. All are great. Two are worn on the outside but perfectly broken in on the inside. Carried a lot, shot some. The third is like new -that's the 21. I guess the 45 ACP was too much for them and it just stayed in inventory until being traded in ha ha ha. Uh.... Seriously, the prices were all in the low $300's. What a bargain!
I own a few used Glocks & in the past bought a NYPD un issued GPNY .38spl revolver, 2000s. 2 of my Glocks have a few up grades: night sights, Cerakote Elite, Tango Down mag release/slide stop. MilSpin Back Plate, KKM match barrels. Glock 22: 9mm, .357sig .
I own 2 Glock 23 a gen 3 and 4 police trades and 1 Glock 19 gen 3 police trade. Glocks are incredibly difficult to wear out. The 19 looked like it had several hundred if not a thousand + when I bought it, I’ve since put nearly 10,000 rounds more through it and it’s flawless.
My 23 gen 3 is my daily carry for the last 4 years with 2000 rounds from myself and who knows how many it had before but to is flawless and accurate. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another police trade.

Bought three Glock 17 LEO trade-ins 20 years ago. I've had to replace things like a mag release spring that was badly rusted and broke, but they are great.
My former Service Weapon was a Glock 19-3. Was a factory refab and was an NYPD issue. Its been on my hip for over 20 years, and although retired, on call in Wifey's night stand. Great gun.

We rarely squandered money on "overpriced" gear. Our suppliers sold us name brand quality equipment well below retail and some LE pricing straight from the manufacturer was below wholesale. I know Glock Firearms was a STRONG supporter of our agencies when I was a department Firearms and Academy instructor. Safariland as well when supplying duty gear.
Great video! Several years ago, I bought 3 Rem 870 Police Magnums for $249 each. Some 'duty' wear but great mechanical condition. Got a Glock 22 for $279. My FFL (also a cop) said it "appears unissued." IMHO, many (most) police trade-ins are little used but show surface (usually holster) wear. Night sights may be dead. Functionally, they are great deals! My Beretta 92 is a trade-in, but I don't remember the price. $ was similar to my other purchases.
When I was a deputy in the very early 90s, we were issued the Beretta 92s. I loved that shooter plus our training Lt. was a certified Beretta armorer. He kept our stuff functioning like they should. I eventually bought a new in the box 92 for $450.00 at a gun dealer I knew well and bought many guns from.
Most police trade-in guns will have holster wear, but will function fine and were probably inspected by an armorer every year. I bought 2 of the 3 handguns we "changed" from, the 686 and the Glock 22, I had carried. I did not get the 4046, because it was a terrible design double action only automatic. Interestingly, I carried the same shotgun, Rem 870 Magnum, for 28 years. The stock was a bit rough from its long ride, but if they had wanted to sell it to me for half the cost of new - take my money now! It was a great shooter.
The pistols were about half the cost of new, and in my case their use and or abuse was known firsthand, so were a great bargain.
I had some mannequins I used to do el Presidente drills with in my revolver days. I always used full magnum ammo, because that what one SHOULD be carrying when SHTF occurs, for those drills. They finally became unusable, but no faster than if using wadcutters. That was the only upside to autos as the "target" ammunition had to be about the same power as the duty ammo, in order to make the gun function, so the recoil was not dissimilar during traing and scores were more realistic.
Multiple targets should always be a part of training, but generally is not done agencywide because of $.
BEWARE.....a police trade in excellent shape is a good buy as it was carried and used little. If you see one with lots of wear on the outside that means it was used as a range gun and shot to shit so avoid.
Just got a very nice bush master police buy back in excellent condition at about 1/2 price.
Magazines can be an issue. They have been left loaded for long periods and shaken a million steps.

Also, my ffl has a G21 with pink nail polish on it where the deputy tried to do color inlay. It’s sad looking. 😅
Most duty issued guns are in good shape appearance wise and work (for annual requalification). The rough guns are the ones that came from the training unit or used at the police academy.
I have a police trade-in G22. Worst shooting Glock I ever had!! Sent it in. Came back better but not great. I changed the barrel and it shoots as good as my G35 now. ❤❤
I purchased a Glock 45ACP and a Sig P226 in 40 S&W. Both looked they never were carried. Great price value relationship. My son also purchased a Glock 21SF, in had some slide finish, but another great value
I own four police trade-in handguns: S&W Model 65, 10 and a 4586 and a Glock 19 gen 3. Sort of. My S&W Model 65 and Model 4586 were carried by my dad when he was an Idaho State Police trooper. He bought the M65 when ISP switched to the 4586 in 91 and it was gifted to him when he retired. I own a S&W M10 nickel plated 5" barrel that was once owned by the Detroit PD. I own a Glock 19 that was issued to me new back in 2006 and I purchased it when my agency switched over the Gen 5 Glock Model 45 in 2020. Not a true trade-in because I was the only officer to ever carry it, but it had to be sold to me by an FFL so for a couple weeks it sat in the arms room until the paperwork was done. Regardless I've never seen any trade-ins that weren't mechanically sound. Same with the milsurp guns that are in my safe.
I bought the Mode 64 I was issued out of the Academy when we transitioned to the Glock 22 .40 Caliber as our new service weapon. I also added a 2" Model 64 that was a carry gun in the safe, one of five for the Chief or Sergeants in plain clothes. All the revolvers were refurbished by Smith and Wesson prior to being released to the officers, or to the FFL Dealer who handled the transfer of our Glocks. Five years later, I bought my Glock 22, when we downsized to the Glock 23. Glock reconditioned the Glock 22s then returned them to those officers who purchased theirs, or to the FFL to sell to the public.
I shot PPC, so my guns were shot a LOT, but few officers shot as much. Some ONLY shot when Required for training or qualification. We held open range days once a month, and provided ammo and coaching throughout the day. We rarely had more than a half dozen show, usually the same ones every month.
My second pistol purchase was a gun my wife picked out. It was a used HK P2000 9 mm, date code says it is a 2012 model LEM V2 version. Never heard of HK guns. But my wife liked the way it fit her hand. Too me it hurt to fire it. It had the XL back strap and 2 13 round magazines. Ordered a medium back strap and it feels great to shoot and very dependable. With the right leather holster it is one of my 2 EDC guns.

LE trade ins CAN be junk, but they aren’t always. I recently picked up a very nice Colt 6721 for $629 and it was actually in really nice shape.
I have a hard time recommending the recent police trade in to new shooters since theyre almost all in .40. The price of ammo and the increased recoil being the reasons. My dad recently decided he wanted a semi auto for road trips and has always been a .357 mag guy. Has a 4" stainless Colt Python and a 4" blued Ruger Security Six. Rarely uses .38 special in them. Has no faith in 9mm, hence why .38 special is rarely used in the wheelguns. Also is not impressed with .45 acp due to not getting any real capacity advantages in the guns he likes. Which are ones not made of plastic. He loves my beretta m9a1 but not the caliber. We found him a beretta 96 centurion police trade in perfect shape for $350. Got some 13rd mecgar mags and after shooting .357 mag the .40 s&w was easy enough on him from the recoil and price of ammo perspective. Keeps it loaded with 135gr Corbon. There is definitely a place for them. One thing i will add about police trade in guns is that if you can not for some reason really test the gun the way you should with any carry gun the chance of it feeding JHP ammo is really high. The guns are traded in on the standard of a very artificial service life. My brothers department gets new guns every 5 years and that is way more common than not.
not quite a police trade-in but couple years ago I picked up a US Army World War II service 1911 pistol. This was the real deal from the CMP. now that thing was beat to hell but it was in complete working condition even with the new barrel from the mid 80s. I believe the gun was made in 1944. Some people see scratches I see character and history. It’s all a part of the story of that tool.
Police generally buy lowest common denominator guns because many cops have zero experience or interest in guns and need a 9 pound trigger with a 3/4" pull to help prevent negligent discharges. My county (Cochise County, AZ) allows cops a preference to choose any piece they want if they don't like the mush trigger abominations they are issued. I assume all the cops with a choice handgun are good shooters, and the others ... not so much. I used to belong to a shooting club back in Alaska that was used for annual shooting quals by the local police. It seemed like there were no "average" shooters among them. They were either absolute dead-on 10 ring shooters out to 25 yards, or shockingly bad sprayers that had to keep repeating to even stay in the black to qualify for another year. Those outstanding shooters were regulars at the range, hell, the department gave them free ammo so why wouldn't all of them be at this indoor range on a winter day off? Sorry. Long way to say LE guns are chosen to reduce lawsuits and training costs and may not be ideal for dedicated shooters.
Have Two trade in s S&W MP 9 and a 40 . Looking at a MP C 9 for 350 plus tax transfer fee so might as well say 400
It is a good idea to see the firearm in person before buying it. If it has been factory refurbished, it is probably great. As stated in the video, they will have signs of holster wear. You do want to make sure that the frame mates with the slide and slides easily without binding. Cop guns (and security guards) may have issues where the frame and slide have been stressed too much by the holster wear and getting in and out of the patrol car. But if the slide mates to the frame, you are good. If you have any issues with feeding or failure to extract, buy a brand new quality magazine, and try again. After that, if you still have some issues, get a new oem replacement spring kit. I had a glock that started developing feeding and extracting problems. A new standard weight spring kit made it perform like new. If that doesn't work, call Glock and get an RMA. They can fix (or replace) it.
My experience with my two trade ins is that they looked bad and shot fantastically. One of them is pathetic looking (I had to clean it multiple times after picking it up from my FFL, who shook his head and wished me luck) and it's the gun that I shoot best with. The other shoots great, too. It looks worn, but it's not terrible looking. I did get the sights replaced on that one. But who cares about the looks when the price is good and they shoot great?
I had a trade in glock 22 and had the same experience. You could see the wear from the kydex holster but you could tell it wasn’t fired to death. I sold it a few years later but that’s mostly cause glocks don’t fit my hand well and the gen 3 trigger was nothing to write home about.it’s a great way to save money. You would be better off buying a buy back or trade in whatever then buying a cheaper brand of pistol for sure.
They are plentiful and most if not all are V/VG/EX..that's it!!!!
I have many used cop guns. I have several glocks that are trade ins because most depts are going to 9mm in my state.And they all shoot great. only shot once a year. My old dept gave us 50rds a month to shoot most never got them.I got 2 870 police shotguns last year 187 each.
The finish will most likely be worn off, but most police guns have very low round count.
You don't carry oil to the range? Never heard of that. ALWAYS carry tools and oil.
i got a police trade in beretta 92fs very minor finish wear, touched it up and looks good, it was made in 1999, so it still has metal controls on it. great shooting gun.

Doc guns can be great or bad. I would not want on off tge quilfation range.
One on post are handled alot and are going to have marks on them but they may have not been shot much.
The ones in tge control room might never leave tge safe.
The other department i work at. The officer had to supply there own handgun.
I bought a north central New York police academy P226 DAK in 40, brand new in the box. 3 mags, thing was practically unfired.
I bought an NH state police p220 years ago...finish was well worn...inside was clean and barely had any wear. .paid $400...well worth every penny

I like the trade in's. They are shot very little (usually), not well taken care of (usually). By the time they are traded the defects have shown up and were fixed.
Carried a lot shot a little there is a ballistics record but if you're using it for legal purposes that shouldn't matter at all
Blued firearms that one has became discontent with the finish is a an easy fix. Strip it down, place all the blued metal in distilled vinegar for a few hours and the bluing will be gone. Put on some latex gloves, degrease it with alcohol and reblue. I like going the hot blue route with Brownells products. Once bluing is done, coat everything well with oil and let it sit for about 24 hours. I’ve done a few long guns that way and they turned out great!

The Glock 23 being my favorite gun of all time, I have bought several police trade ins and each one was excellent! Granted they apparently never clean them as they were always covered in lint and grime but a complete strip and ultrasonic cleaning and they come out looking near brand new.

Back in the day, I came across an S&W model 10-5 that was never issued out. The revolver didn't have a mark on it, and I picked it up for $275. I also have my kids' older duty sidearm. It's an S&W m&p40 that he bought back and gave to me. I love when cops hand out free guns!😂👍🇺🇲
I also had a S&W model 10-5. It was my grandfathers he had purchased used. It had scratches and holster wear. He kept it as a home defense gun. When he passed, I received a couple of his guns and let my brother pick which one he wanted. It was only fair... He chose the Smith 10-5. Can't blame him! lol

The police trades can be great deals. I bought dozens of the trade-ins back in the day when everybody went to plastic 9mm and they were CHEAP. All metal, mostly .40S&W(which is a fine caliber btw)and often DAO which I actually prefer. Bought 92d and 96D, Beretta Cougar 8040D and a literal ton of DAO 3rd gen S&Ws(5946, 4046, 4053, etc). Each one an all metal reliable pistol for $200-250 with the .40s generally at the lower end of that range. Actually, for anything other than carry I'd say the .40 is preferable,.....and there is also such a thing as 'police trade-in' ammo too. Just picked up 2k rds of factory .40S&W HST for under 20 cents per rd and 1k of .357SIG HST for under $0.45 delivered to my door. When departments switch guns to go to 9mm they have stocks of their former duty ammo to get rid of as well. .40 HST for less than the price of cheap 9mm practice ammo? Yeah, it's still worth having a few .40s around.
I’ve bought 4 over the years. 2 Glock 22’s and 2 S&W M&P’s. All 4 are great guns and function perfectly. Internally they look as if they were seldom fired.

They're traded as surplus property to whatever dealer they buy new guns from and the new guns are discounted by the amount allowed for the trade. The dealer can then resell them.
Every state has some method for disposal of surplus property.

I've had a model 15-3 combat masterpiece that was a police trade in for years, it's damn near mint, looked new when I bought it, the KCPD here won plenty of gunfights with them so I know it'll do fine as a nightstand gun stoked with FBI load.
I bought a Mossburg 500 that rode around in the trunk of a security vehicle for 10 years. It had those plastic/rubber replacement stock and forend, 18 and a half inch barrel improved cylinder. Holds 8 21/2 in. Shells. And has sling swivels. The receiver had lost all its finish as did the barrel. $100 .That was 40 years ago. Still going strong with no problems. It looks rough but functions perfectly. I even shot skeet with it and won to get a new porch enclosed with vinyl siding for free .
