Getting your Gen One Vmax 1200 to run cooler.

- During the Summer months, it gets pretty hot down here in Florida and riding my Vmax and seeing the engine temperature creep towards the red line always had me on edge. I flushed the system, added additives to the coolant that helped a bit but I wanted the fan to come on sooner.
Some folks out there rig a switch to manually turn the fan on but I wanted something that would automatically take care of it. So, I found a thermal switch that is specifically made for the Vmax and it works like a charm. The bike runs cooler and the fan comes on earlier now and the engine temperature never gets anywhere near the red line any more.

Can you post a link to the parts, or possibly make a short video about your crash bar/ forward pegs / light setup? looks nice.
I'll make a video but I added all this back in 2008 but I'm sure you can hunt around and still find the engine guards, lights and pegs from Kuryakyn. Once you add the engine guards you can measure the tubes and find the right set up. I don't have any ordering info from that far back. Thanks for your comments.
@tanktankerson1042 Thanks for the reply! I'll give it a search. How do you like the pegs being up there? I've seen some products on Amazon that move the controls up there, too, instead of just pegs. If you had to do it over again, would you leave the controls where they're at or move them forward?
The controls were never changed and are in the original position. These are just highway pegs for when I'm cruising and want to stretch out my legs. I like the location of the controls from the factory. All the mods I've done I really enjoy and wouldn't change a thing.
I already ordered the lower-temp switch, should arrive in a couple of days. I have a question about some accessories I noticed on your VMAX... the side cases. Could you please direct me to the place where you purchased the side cases and mounts?
It was from a small Mom & Pop Company called FatMax, he is now out of business and doesn't carry them anymore. Too bad, his quality and attention to detail was great! Sorry to give you the bad news, thank you for your comments.
Thank You for your reply. The search continues.
I want to add a tip for installing the lower-temp fan switch... I purchased a 7/8" Oxygen Sensor socket at Harbor Freight for $8.99, plus tax. Installation went smoothly, and the result was exactly as you indicated in the video. Thanks again for the video.
Awesome!! I gotta get one of those, thanks.
Cant get a spanner or socket over the connector. Cut the connector off. i did 😁👍😂. Love my VMAX.
They didn't make it easy working on parts of the Vmax, I hear your frustration.
And now when it cools to the proper/normal level ( usually 3 o clock just below the rivet) it will be running and never turn off until you turn off the bike. A very annoying mod that I have also performed.
Hmm, sounds like the sensor is faulty. I never had that issue with mine at all. No worries though, I no longer have the Vmax.
@@tanktankerson1042 many besides me have reported this so its not just me or a part defect. If the cut in is lower, the cut out low temp is also lower. You will find that the fans are running well below the normsl operating temp of the bike, like when you are done with your ride.
@@steamer97 Thanks for that info Steamer.
Great vid, what is the link to get the part 👍
The link is above in the video description. I always add the links there in case the folks want to order the same part 🙂
What saddlebag do you have on your Vmax? I like the way that looks what brand can you do a video on the saddlebags
No use doing a video, they "were" from a company called "Fat Max" but he is out of business now. You "may" be able to hunt around on Ebay to see if someone is selling a slightly used pair.
For me I added a quart of Slick 50 to the oil change. It reduces friction n I did not hear the radiator fan again. I have a 1986 VMax by the way it’s for sale
with Slick 50, no problems with clutch slippage? I will never part with my 07 Vmax I bought new, too many riders that I know who have owned a Vmax and sold wish they still had it. It is truly a unique motorcycle and so much fun to ride! Thanks for the comment.
Still for sale?
What? My Vmax? I never said it was for sale and I'll never part with it.@@yamahafast5088
I'm a community doctor helping in Mexico, had my transport stolen in a UA-cam telegram scam, I've been searching for a VMax here, absolutely no luck, the two worst mistakes of my life? Not having a family and selling my 99 VMax
What brand are the panniers, thanks,, Kevin
They were from a Company called "Fat Max' but unfortunately, they have gone out of business.
After a VMax no other bike will do
True, I will NEVER part with my Vmax.
If only i had never sold mine,i can never replace it
Beautiful bike
I need to find the same part in the UK. Thank you. Great video!
You are welcome, glad I could help.
