  • This is a special video of a before and after of the elevators at Boscov's in Wilkes Barre, PA. Here's a description of these elevators... This store is over 100 years old and it originally had Westinghouse manually controlled elevators. Around the 1950s they were modernized with pop-out buttons, and when I was there in 2015 that's what they had. Just a couple months ago I found out that Schindler was going to be modernizing these elevators, and I wanted to get back for a final ride before they got modernized, but unfortunately that didn't happen. I went back a few weeks ago, and one car was already modernized while the other was still in the process, but the modernized one was the only one working. However when I was hear in 2015 I did not realize there was an elevator in the parking garage here. The elevator in the garage is not getting modernized, and I rode it when a was here a few weeks ago! Anyways enjoy this before and after video I put together!

That him lover you were touching was originally attendant mode. If they were running an attendant mode, you first hit the directional buttons either up or down. Inside you will see the letters U & D. You hit the letter u and then the Upper Floor you want. And then you would have taken that lover and held it to the left which would have closed the doors. And once the car starts moving you release it. That was never Emmanuel elevator it had a manual attendant mode would still depended on those buttons. The past button allows you to skip any floor that you push the button. Those elevators are amazingly cool and I haven't ridden them since I was a kid and I can't believe they were around that long. I hope they're not taking them out but the problem with elevator equipment that old and a company that no longer makes it is that fixing the equipment and finding replacement parts is extremely difficult. It's a miracle it lasted that long and it's a testament to how things used to be made to last and we're made with quality. I bet you the new stuff they're going to put in will be a piece of junk that won't last 10 years

How could they do that to those beautiful original Westy's. This is such a great loss. R.I.P. 1940's Westy's

Those actually could be from the 1930s or 1940s!!!!! They appear to actually been Westinghouse Signal Control judging by the crank. Sucks they got modded, what a piece of history!!!!

+Airtranlover I have heard about it, do you ever plan to come to PA sometime soon? I am from the Philadelphia area, so if you ever come to that area do you want to film some elevators together?

I have to tell you they did not do a bad job modernizing it. It's not as fun as the old Westinghouse fixtures. But you can still tell it runs off the original motor. and it sounds like they kept some of the Westinghouse components. But that thing is still one fine elevator. Schindler had to do something to it because it was becoming more and more expensive to maintain and operate that equipment. Also one elevator had not been working for quite some time. What happened was they weren't able to find parts to fix it and the next one was going to go

If you acquired ANY of the parts of the old elevators, please tell me. I will pay very generously for them

+Airtranlover, unfortunately I did not get any of the old elevator parts, but I think PAelevators did.
