Wow. What a great tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Thank you so much for this. I've been living in Jacksonville, FL for 21 years now. Skynyrd will never be forgotten.
Years before Ronnie told several people that were close to him and he would never live to see thirty years old and that he would go out with his boots on meaning he would be on tour. He may have been up the night before so he took those sleeping pills but I also think that he knew his time was about up and he probably thought if he slept through it, should something happen, maybe it would be for the best. There were fireballs shooting out of one engine from Lakeland to Greenville S.C. 2 days before and the band was uneasy. It was about 2 months and 12 days short of his 30th birthday. I think Ronnie was preparing I pray that he and the others did not suffer. God bless them. In my heart ❤️ forever. Gene Odom, you are also irreplaceable. You are a treasure. By your actions we can see you are such a good and loyal friend to Ronnie. Thank you for that! Much love.❤ Also thank you to the first responders, those brave people from Mississippi. Without them the death toll probably would have been higher . The situation was unthinkable their bravery is unparalleled. We can not thank them enough for stepping up. You are the heroes in this story. Thank you so much.❤
Such a tragedy. All of the musicians in this group were super talented, as were the crew. I heard a rumor a while back that RVZ loved and admired the talent of Steve and Cassie Gaines so much that he eventually wanted their younger brother Bob (a very talented drummer) to join LS. Jordan, could you ask Gene about this when you get the chance? Unfortunately, Bob passed away a few years ago, but there is a video of him here on UA-cam where he speaks about his siblings. I teared up when he spoke about his older brother Steve and his admiration for his talent. Great video as always!
@@redlady8296 I am a big fan of the Gaines family. I never knew how talented they were, and it has been so much fun discovering just how gifted they truly were.
sorry to tell you this but the rumor about the younger brother is just that , a rumor . but ronnie did love Steve and cassie as he did all of the band members but when cassie pretty muched begged the guys to listen to her brother Steve who was playing right across the street at the holiday inn there were not interested untill she kept telling ronnie hes really really good so they said ok . while playing mr.breeze that nite ronnie motioned for Steve to come on out and play , so Steve noticed neither Allen or Gary were useing a slide so he reached in his vest pocket grabbed a slide and just tore it up ! he went on to play one more tune with them after mr.breeze which was t for Texas and again just ripped it up , ronnie was so impressed with his unique style of playing that nite after the show they told Steve, go get your stuff your comin with us ! after that he and ronnie had a connection like rvz had never had with any other musician he had ever known or played with and they grew very close very fast and the rest as they say is history but no hon they never even thought about another drummer after artimus replaced Bob. rock on and turn it up honkys !

Hi Jordan, what a nice old theatre. Lovely seeing those old home movies of them all happy and enjoying themselves. Judging by those wreckage clips it's a miracle anyone survived at all. Nice hearing those stories from the guys. Great vlog Jordan.
It seems to all be tied together in some musical way. The plane they were in once belonged to Jerry Lee Lewis. The plane goes down in Mississippi where Elvis was born and where Rock n Roll was born. They were headed to Louisiana where Jerry Lee Lewis was from. Elvis died right after this happened. It's so sad for the one's who lost their lives. It's so heartbreaking. Certainly don't understand destroying property because of drunkenness or dope. But I believe at the time of the crash Gene had plans along with RVZ to straighten up the ship and clean up their lives. What a damn shame, best band ever ! Ever hear a group so tight ? As AL KOOPER would explain, they never deviated from their song structures. No jamming, just the music as it was meant to be heard. I think they developed this style from the countless hours at "Hell House". Just as the Beatles, they were very rehearsed before hitting it big in the US. "Simple Man" still makes me wish for the good old days and times...😢

My 18th birthday was on October 20/1977. Television news coverage was minimal in the 1970s. I was living in Chattanooga, and I found out about the crash in the morning paper. It struck me as strange that The Chattanooga Times newspaper had such a small portion of the paper telling of plane crash.
they were suppose to have a concert October 27 1977 at Austin Peay State University in my hometown of Clarksville Tennessee ..I had tickets ..I have the Street Survivors album with the flames on the cover (the flames were removed after the crash on any albums shipped for it had barely been released ) inside the sleeve was a concert list saying Austin T Perry college Nashville Tennessee ..ty Jordan
@@anndaniels3545 no ..I'm not sure what happened to it ..I have a couple from the same venue. .KC and the Sunshine Band and Doobie Brothers from around that same time but can not find that ticket plus a couple of others that I had saved
@@jonprosise7162 what I can remember it was a great concert but one song that really sticks out is That Smell. I can’t remember if it was the last song or Free Bird. It’s been over 40 years and I was 19 at the time. I just remember having a blast and we had seats down in front of the band. Imagine the shock of hearing the news the next morning about the plane crash. 😢
Thanks Jordan for the great vlog, we all Partied in the 70s, but I think they took it to another level. I worked at the snowbird ski resort in the 70s when Lynyrd skynyrd came to SLC in June of 77, I played a little guitar in those days so I was real excited to see them live, and they didn’t disappoint. At the resort they had a whole floor booked for their stay, when they left they had taken every mirror from every room. I never heard if they took them with them or just what they did with them, but it’s a great story. Again Jordan thanks!!
You can see some of them snorting coke and smoking hash in the first few minutes of the home movie, we all miss those guys. Thanks for sharing your story, very cool.
I know the stunts of Keith Moon all to well. Back in the day (mid 60's to the mid 70's) Dick Clark had the Caravan of Stars. I was on one of several tours with that show. The Who was on one of those tours. It was pure chaos for 2 weeks traveling with them.
In case anybody is wondering what they're doing with those upside-down cups you stick a pin through a piece of paper and you stick a piece of hash on the tip of the pin you lite the peace of hash with a lighter and then you blow it out and put a cup over it when it fills with smoke you tip the cup and suck the Smoke Out. yes I know from experience it works really good with black ash not so good with blonde hash cuz blonde hash break into little crumbs but you could do it black hash more like clay
Thank you so very very much Jordan! I can't even tell you how much I enjoyed watching this. Lynyrd Skynyrd is my favorite band and I listen to them most every day. Seeing the wreckage was just so sad. I can't believe anyone even lived after going through that! Thanks to all the speakers, I enjoyed listening to their memories of LS. The home movie footage was awesome and something I never thought I'd see. I'm planning on going to Jacksonville next month, so I'll be able to see the LS sites of interest. Thank you very much again, it is much appreciated!

Jordan, i have so loved all of your LS videos. They were a band that i loved as a teenager and when my youngest daughter was born, in Alabama, you guessed it, her lullaby and “theme song”, still, 35 years later, is “Sweet Home Alabama”! Thank you again!!
ohhh, wowww... what an event; a 'jazz funeral' and reverent memorial, all in one... ty for sharing it with everyone, jordan... :) s'what you do best!! :) i'm not even a big fan, but anytime there's that unfortunate intersection of "artists + unnecessary tragedy"... well, i get "the feels"... (how old am i? well, let me tell you... ;0) i remember being on the schoolbus, ready to go home for the day, and hearing about the crash on WLS-chicago news... the newscaster said something like, "you know this song?" (quite snippet of "freebird", "if i leave here tomorrow...") "well... there was a plane crash..." even then, at my young age, my heart sunk, and it still sticks with me to this day.
By the way I Saul Lynyrd Skynyrd and 75 in Asbury park New Jersey at the casino without Steve Gaines then again in 76 they give me back my bulletts album just came out then 1977 of July at Philadelphia with a great bunch of other bands outdoor show then finally at the Asbury Park convention hall I think it was August 1977 and we all had tickets to go see them at Madison Square Garden November 11, 1977 with Ted Nugent as the opening act seven straight nights of sold out but that never happened still have my ticket
Thank you Jordan for sharing this with us. Liked the theater and the home movies. Enjoyed the stories. I remember hearing about the crash. Enjoyed listening to their music. Seeing the footage of the crash, it really was a miracle anyone survived.
The bands last song - "That Smell" - would eerily foreshadow the horrific and too gruesome to describe plane crash that claimed the life of LYNYRD SKYNYRD's leader and driving force along with half of the band: THAT SMELL - LYRICS: Whiskey bottles, and brand new cars Oak tree you're in my way There's too much coke and too much smoke Look what's going on inside you Ooooh that smell Can't you smell that smell Ooooh that smell The smell of death surrounds you Angel of darkness is upon you Stuck a needle in your arm So take another toke, have a blow for your nose And one more drink fool, will drown you Ooooh that smell Can't you smell that smell Ooooh that smell The smell of death surrounds you Now they call you Prince Charming Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes Say you'll be all right come tomorrow But tomorrow might not be here for you Ooooh that smell Can't you smell that smell Ooooh that smell The smell of death surrounds you Hey, you're a fool, you (2:30) Go on stick them needles in your arm (2:34) I know I been there before (2:50) One little problem that confronts you (3:28) Got a monkey on your back Just one more fix, Lord might do the trick One hell of a price for you to get your kicks Ooooh that smell Can't you smell that smell Ooooh that smell The smell of death surrounds you Ooooh that smell Can't you smell that smell Ooooh that smell The smell of death surrounds you Hey, you're a fool, you Go on stick those needles in your arm You're just a fool, just a fool, just a fool
Plane ran out of fuel. Lived in the area back then and everybody loved them. Couldn't be in a band and not play Free bird in your set, miss em and Molly Hatchet as well. Great times!
The South was about to rise again. So the gov killed Elvis, Skynyrd, coach “Bear” Bryant, Dr. King, and I’m sure I’m forgetting a few more. We had conquered racial differences through music and football and so “they” interrupted the rise to keep control and now there’s more hatred than ever. Thank your local politician for that.
I was fortunate to see them before the crash! It was an epic concert and I will never forget how tight they were! It tore my heart out when I heard about the crash! Had just moved to California and didn’t have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of! I did have a way to play music! I can’t think of a song they did that wasn’t awesome! RIP all of the LS band
Yay! Jordan is in my hometown of Lakeland. I love Skynyrd! I wish I knew this was going to be at the Polk theater; I would’ve came and saw it. It would’ve been cool to see you also. Lakeland was their 2nd to last show before the crash.
Enjoyed this, thanks! Thing is,the destructive partying part is the least interesting thang about the video. Besides, they could only emulate Keith Moon and Joe Walsh! Cheers!
I don’t think smoking hash and pot is really considered destructive partying. And I only wish Ronnie and his boys were still around to show you how to drink those English punk bands under the table. Never been a yankee who could out-drink a rebel. Emulate? I hardly think so boy.
always hated that their legacy seems to be married to the crash but there was more than just an end to this band. truly one of the tightest musical ensembles that existed in the world of rock. each knew and played their part to the max because if they didn't RVZ was the punisher. Love Gene and love what you did with this. Thanks for giving them the spotlight they so richly deserve.
It was probably a good thing the plane ran out of gas or it would have exploded like a bomb. It has remained in my mind all these years of the tragic loss to the skynyrd band.
How nice you got invited to see the rare home movies and hear from the survivors and learn so much more about the band. It's nice you have made so many great friends,
I’m sorry I missed this! Lakeland resident here. Great job Jordan. Thanks for sharing. Lots of history at the Polk Theater. Elvis performed there in 1956. There are a few videos out there about it. We are lucky we still have such an awesome venue.

“ Play It Pretty For Atlanta”
Wow that gave me chills
Play freebird for America .
Did Dean die on the plane accident?
Had the pleasure of going on Gene's tour yesterday. Highly recommend. He mentioned his tour requests have increased considerably since Jordan's videos....Thanks for that Jordan!
Do you still have your ticket?
@@anndaniels3545 no ..I'm not sure what happened to it ..I have a couple from the same venue. .KC and the Sunshine Band and Doobie Brothers from around that same time but can not find that ticket plus a couple of others that I had saved
We had our tickets also they ask people if they wanted a refund but most people they kept them.
Saw in Chicago in July 10 Ronnie had a cast on his leg never new what happened any one know the cause
Exactly 44 Years Ago Today
Never forget this day. I was there at their last concert in Greenville SC. The next day the awful plane crash 😢 TY Jordan for doing this.
Wow girl just wow! How bittersweet that you went to their last concert..
Cathi...was there
Anything extra special about the last concert. Will you tell me one thing about their last concert?
@@jonprosise7162 what I can remember it was a great concert but one song that really sticks out is That Smell. I can’t remember if it was the last song or Free Bird. It’s been over 40 years and I was 19 at the time. I just remember having a blast and we had seats down in front of the band. Imagine the shock of hearing the news the next morning about the plane crash. 😢
@@cathifowler2567 i wil pay you if you know anyone from that night that has audio or footage of that night
Wow, loved it Jordan. Keep up the good work. Skynyrd content never dies.
How anybody survived that plane crash, I’m gobsmacked WOW .
Thank you,
Jordan.
rest in peace to Gary Rossington! the band is back together in heaven now!
I heard they snorted a lot of coke off those mirrors and taken them for safety reasons.
@@garyrunnalls7714 that makes sense Gary, mystery solved, thanks!!
We made it work with blond hash that had the black lines of opium in it, it was moist.
Great Vlog my favorite band , gone too soon
Great blog brother I was looking forward to this and you did a great job way better than Artemus or should I say Delmer as likes to call him LOL I love Gene Odom he is the man the myth the legend he always shoot straight God bless him I hope one day to meet him that is on my bucket list
Jordan, i have so loved all of your LS videos. They were a band that i loved as a teenager and when my youngest daughter was born, in Alabama, you guessed it, her lullaby and “theme song”, still, 35 years later, is “Sweet Home Alabama”! Thank you again!!
Amazing video as always, love seeing gene.i can watch old footage of skynnard all day.many thanks for this awesome video Jordan.
ohhh, wowww... what an event; a 'jazz funeral' and reverent memorial, all in one... ty for sharing it with everyone, jordan...
Hold onto that ticket!
Thank you Jordan for sharing this with us. Liked the theater and the home movies. Enjoyed the stories. I remember hearing about the crash. Enjoyed listening to their music. Seeing the footage of the crash, it really was a miracle anyone survived.
The bands last song - "That Smell" - would eerily foreshadow the horrific and too gruesome to describe plane crash that claimed the life of LYNYRD SKYNYRD's leader and driving force along with half of the band:
THAT SMELL - LYRICS:
Whiskey bottles, and brand new cars
Oak tree you're in my way
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose
And one more drink fool, will drown you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Now they call you Prince Charming
Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes
Say you'll be all right come tomorrow
But tomorrow might not be here for you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Hey, you're a fool, you (2:30)
Go on stick them needles in your arm (2:34)
I know I been there before (2:50)
One little problem that confronts you (3:28)
Got a monkey on your back
Just one more fix, Lord might do the trick
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Hey, you're a fool, you
Go on stick those needles in your arm
You're just a fool, just a fool, just a fool
Ronnie wrote that song about Gary when he was all fucked up & crashed into a tree.
@@hippydippy yup
Plane ran out of fuel. Lived in the area back then and everybody loved them. Couldn't be in a band and not play Free bird in your set, miss em and Molly Hatchet as well. Great times!
The South was about to rise again. So the gov killed Elvis, Skynyrd, coach “Bear” Bryant, Dr. King, and I’m sure I’m forgetting a few more. We had conquered racial differences through music and football and so “they” interrupted the rise to keep control and now there’s more hatred than ever. Thank your local politician for that.
@@sevinstorey4365 Sevin...who is "they"? Are you sure it's the correct "they" or a shadow "they", a completely different "they"?
I was fortunate to see them before the crash! It was an epic concert and I will never forget how tight they were! It tore my heart out when I heard about the crash! Had just moved to California and didn’t have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of! I did have a way to play music! I can’t think of a song they did that wasn’t awesome! RIP all of the LS band
RIP Gary Rossington 🙏❤️
Yay! Jordan is in my hometown of Lakeland. I love Skynyrd! I wish I knew this was going to be at the Polk theater; I would’ve came and saw it. It would’ve been cool to see you also.
Lakeland was their 2nd to last show before the crash.
Awesome video!! Thanks for filming all this. Good to see never before seen footage and stories from the real original lynyrd skynyrd band and crew!!
Gene is a great man
Love
This was great! Thank you to you and Gene for everything.
I remember doing hash just like they are doing with the wine glass.
Opium oil too. Thanks God for keeping me Alive. Viva Cristo Rey 🙏
Great time for music. Nice, footage. Sad, the band suffered such a tragic loss.
always hated that their legacy seems to be married to the crash but there was more than just an end to this band. truly one of the tightest musical ensembles that existed in the world of rock. each knew and played their part to the max because if they didn't RVZ was the punisher. Love Gene and love what you did with this. Thanks for giving them the spotlight they so richly deserve.
Gary has smiling eyes here before the accident, they seem dimmer now and understandably so.
Hes had a lot of problems over the years, I hear
i love these guys sad it ended so tragic
It was probably a good thing the plane ran out of gas or it would have exploded like a bomb. It has remained in my mind all these years of the tragic loss to the skynyrd band.
My understanding is that the copilot dumped the gas (what was left of it) when before they crashed to prevent a fire upon impact.
If they had gas they wouldn't have crashed in the first place.
Another amazing video Jordan
Wow !!! How cool was this this !! Excellent coverage Jordan!!!
I never knew the story . Tragic loss. Glad the survivors kept the band history alive.
I can't believe only 6 people died in that tangled mess.
How nice you got invited to see the rare home movies and hear from the survivors and learn so much more about the band. It's nice you have made so many great friends,
Thanks for sharing this footage
I’m sorry I missed this! Lakeland resident here. Great job Jordan. Thanks for sharing. Lots of history at the Polk Theater. Elvis performed there in 1956. There are a few videos out there about it. We are lucky we still have such an awesome venue.
That era was the best. I remember taking sleeping bags and sleeping while waiting in line to get into concerts.
Very cool and my thanks to u and Gene!
I distinctly remember this i was 17 , i was so sad to find out the loss of. The members of Lynyrd skynyrd rip 🥀🙏😥💔🎸🎵🎶🎼
