    I used to help maintain, as a volunteer, the Kimball pipe organ which had been moved to the Wilturn from the theatre at Pico and Arlington where it was originally located. When the organs' removal was announced, I begged the L. A. Chapter of the theatre organ club not to take it out. We used it for monthly concerts and silent movie presentations. Harold Lloyd appeared at a screening of Saftey Last with Gaylord Carter at the Kimball. It was a full house. The organ was removed, no place could be found to reinstall it. It was sold as parts. So the largest theatre Kimball ever built is gone which leaves a hole in my heart. The 32' diaphone pipes are in Salt Lake City.

    I ushered here in 1965 and off-and-on until 1970. There were movie premiers and later closed-circuit events such as the so-called "Phantom Punch" Clay-Liston fight on May 25, 1965. I loved hanging the iron letters on the marquee. One of my jobs on the big-curved front (Cat Ballou) shows up in historical photos. Another was painting the walls around the orchestra. Many known actors came here regularly, just to see a movie. Walter Winchell came here regularly, as did veteran actor Mike Mazurki, both of whom always stopped to chat with me. The Three Stooges (Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Joe DeRita) hopped from a limousine and passed me into the lobby. I'd had no idea that they were so tiny. L.A. was a very different town. Magical. Kooky. Charming. Thanks to anyone who helped save this gem.

    I remember in the 70's seeing movies when I was a kid there. Aside from the terrace seating and the now performance stage. It's the way I remember it, but it looks newer and much cleaner now. LOL I have never gotten a chance to see a live concert there, but I'm sure it will be awesome. Back in the movie days, there were hardly any people. It would be awesome to see it full!

    I’m glad it was saved, it’s really impressive. I could tell that the ceiling had been repaired, but it still looked really good and the whole place is a beautiful venue. I just saw WASP with Armored Saint there a month ago without ever knowing anything about the place before getting tickets. I was intrigued about it after reading that it was Art Deco and researched it a bit. I really enjoyed the show and the whole Wiltern experience. I had to wonder though, how strong is that balcony and has it ever been reinforced, especially for heavy metal concerts? Our seats were front row Loge and it was giving us a bit of bounce that was a little unnerving! I figured that the old venue has probably seen thousands of shows over years, but then wondered if it has ever had a louder and wilder show than WASP!

    I lived in Koreatown in the mid-nineties. I cannot believe The Wiltern was at-risk of demolition! So glad it wasn't. It's a BEAUTIFUL theater! If you havent alreafy, please watch "Get Crazy" - a zany 80s movie starring Lee Ving.

    Asbestos curtain?

    • @dsolosan
      @dsolosan 3 роки тому +1

      You can see it around the 2 minute mark. Or, are you asking what the asbestos curtain is for? It's to protect the audience in the event that a fire breaks out in the backstage area.

    • @malcorub
      @malcorub 3 роки тому

      @@dsolosan I guess I think of asbestos as being toxic because of the material found in old construction. Just wasn't sure if that is what the narrator was saying...?

    • @dsolosan
      @dsolosan 3 роки тому

      @@malcorub Yes, asbestos is toxic. Usually what happens in a restoration is that the curtain is treated in a way that traps any asbestos fibers, and the curtain is kept in place. It's safer than taking it down and trying to dispose of it. Plus, many asbestos curtains were painted by artists (like the UA, now the theatre at the Ace Hotel), and are quite valuable.
