    I think I probably speak for (almost) all of us when I say I don't care if the video is 25 min or 50 minutes long. I've played the game 2 times now and I'm here for your commentary so if you have something to say and it takes 50 minutes then who cares. I'm here for it.

      Agreed. I'm for these being longer actually if she has the energy. I know YT algo favors vids just around 15-25 mark though

    That story about Thor disguised as Freya always cracks me up. Imagine the "bride" shows up and everyone's O_o "whoa Freya's a lot bigger than we expected"

    I don't comment on stuff very often, but having watched all your videos, I really should thank you. Like most people, I have a general, vague interest in this and have picked up a bunch through osmosis/what I glean through pop media, but it's a different thing entirely to get insight from someone who actually knows their shit. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! This is such a fun, compelling companion piece... though I confess my favorite moments are when you get so involved in the actual story it takes your brain a few moments to switch from "digesting narrative" back into "oh wait oh shit I'm a professional academic" mode. We just can't help when a dang story is engaging.
    as an aside, I'm sure that your decision to try to keep these videos a digestible length is a time management/personal choice but, just to put it out there: I'm positive I speak for everyone when I say that *we* would totally watch episodes of these that are hoooours long. That's not a realistic ask (and it isn't one, really), but someone needs to say it out loud. Just in case. No pressure.

    So excited for another video! I greatly adore these, and I thank you for making them; one of my greatest passions encompasses everything culture, mythology, and language - one of my particular favorites being Old Norse and Nordic history - so these are such a treat. God of War is one of my top favorite games as well, so it all works out wonderfully jaja!
    Thank you again for doing these. They mean so much to me and my neverending search for understanding historic knowledge, sincerely. 🩷

    IMO one of the reasons Mimir speed ran through that list of lore was because these were all tales in GoW 2018

    The fact about Bear McCreary is true and he also performed live during Game awards show 2022 together with Hotier

      I love that nerds of a certain age tend to have this specific, deep love for BSG. So, so ahead of its time. Literally, even -- it came out four years before Breaking Bad, which I use as a kinda milestone for when "Big Prestige TV" really started to be taken seriously in the public consciousness.
      I still find myself listening to the OST every now and again. So say we all, etc.

    Another great episode! I'm loving the extra breakdowns of Mimir's boat ride stories. Its like having a director commentary on a DVD (and I just dated myself lol). Looking forward to the next upload, you're doing a great job!

    One of the biggest criticisms of the 2018 game was the overuse of trolls in boss fights. I think Kratos killing one in a cut scene was their way of poking fun at themselves about it

  • @dodiswatchbobobo
    @dodiswatchbobobo 4 години тому

    There was a first half to that boat conversation that wasn’t in the recording. You might want to do a reaction to a collection of Mimir’s tales specifically at some point. There were a lot in GoW 2018 that you never heard.
    The wandering conversations in Ragnarok aren’t quite so laser-focused on the mythology, but there’s a few very entertaining nuggets.

      @@ProfessorNatalie The whole "a stoic warrior, tempered by tragedy and loss, cracks like an egg and is completely undone by the deranged goofiness of some trickster dweebus" is one of those narrative tropes I am a complete sucker for in fiction. It popping up in older texts/myth this way is a (genuinely lovely) reminder that we are still telling the same stories about ourselves.

    • @ProfessorNatalie

      Trickster dweebus 😂 I love it. My Old Norse class translated this particular myth just this last week. Only in Old Norse do you learn this vocabulary in second semester (I assume).

    • @sunshine7590
      @sunshine7590 19 хвилин тому

      @@ProfessorNatalie Oh, please tell us you let them discover the actual story of this myth on their own.
      I don't know what image is funnier; a professor giving their students an assignment they know has *a punchline,* or some poor student hunched over their desk at 2 AM, brow furrowed, glancing between all their notes while telling themselves that, no, they *really could not have translated that right.*
      sidebar on the former: I've only known a few people in academia, but I wish I could bottle the trembling energy that arises in one when the two wolves of "maintaining professionalism/personal dignity" and "bro I need everyone to know about this wild shit I just read or I'm going to go insane" collide inside of them. You handle it like a pro here, but, if you've got any, I think a lot of us would love video where you talk about your favorite unhinged myths that still amuse you!

    6:55 - I'm remembering something--- not _specifically_ Old Norse related, but general ancient anthropology; the short version is that being literate (ie; reading runes or hieroglyphs or whathaveyou, and able to draw consistent meaning from them), but also storytelling, knowing lore and tales, being able to write new stories to be remembered: used to somewhat be considered an _actual_ magic power? Vibes to that ring any bells?

    • @ProfessorNatalie
      @ProfessorNatalie  2 години тому

      I guess you could think about how Odin gained knowledge of the runes and acquired the mead of poetry as an accomplishment that’s almost like gaining a magic power, and that knowledge of the runes and of poetry was connected to the gods.

  • @Xunkun
    @Xunkun 4 години тому +3

    4:19 - Yes. Raeb is literally "Bear" backwards, and yes, he can actually play that instrument-- they performed live at the Game Awards a few years ago-- the end credits theme after the 'secret' ending (not super-secret, just something you.... really _should_ do in the post-game wandering) so........... dunno how you are about spoilers, if you'd prefer the surprise, because _goddamn,_ is it for an emotional moment.
