The claim that the UN did one and Britain did the other is meaningless, given the number of British colonies which were granted membership in the UN at that time that were easily able to manipulate the weak young league of nations. The British created and managed the Canadian governments under a series of acts of its parliament, including the "British North America Acts" (11) as well as Canada Act 1982. I was 14 in 1982 when Canada became "eligible" to be considered a democracy, but I don't believe adequate conditions have yet been met. The parallels are closer than most people realise, as the British Empire is behind all of these ongoing violations of basic human rights.

Just because people need energy does not mean they need **dirty oil** transported on pipelines built on indigenous lands. That's just what's easiest and most profitable for oil barons. You claim ownership of indigenous lands and then suddenly the indigenous people living there need a legal title for land they've always used. But in fact, Canadian law does recognize that this territory is unceded and therefore that they have some title to this land, and this has held up in court.

Please be careful when suggesting some "communities" agree to this project or another. We should only ever be talking about laws, governments, nations and treaties between those nations. Canadian Indian Act Band Councils are part of the Canadian Federal government bureaucracy. Whether they are "elected" bureaucrats or not doesn't matter, as they are responsible to the Canadian government and not the citizens of Indigenous nations. They only have jurisdiction granted to them from the Canadian government, which under Canada's constitution does not include land. Section 91 of the Canadian Constitution clarifies provincial and federal jurisdiction, and the British granted the federal government jurisdiction over "24. Indians, and lands reserved for the Indians." For anyone who read this and didn't know before that the Canadian Constitution granted the federal government jurisdiction over "Indians, and lands reserved for the Indians", please think about that for a moment. Could you imagine the German constitution granted a specific level of government jurisdiction over "Jews, and lands reserved for the Jews"? Canada Act 1982 was the most recent time the British updated the Canadian constitution, created the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom, and for the first time created an amending formula allowing bodies outside of Britain to amend the Canadian Constitution. This included section 35 which clarified that Indigenous governments operate in parallel with Canadian federal and provincial jurisdiction, and that these Indigenous governments are not subservient to Canadian governments. This should have started the transition away from Indian Act band councils to Indigenous national governments, but colonial Canada has refused to move forward. What the Canadian governments are doing is unlawful, even under their own laws. The British Columbia provincial government claims to govern over land which doesn't have treaties, in direct violation of the Royal Proclamation of 1763 which is clarified as Canadian Law under section 25 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom. The BC governing party is the New Democratic Party, which regularly claims to be "progressive" and yet is authorising ongoing illegal colonial violence against sovereign nations. While I am a settler of Irish, Scottish and French descent currently living in Ottawa, Ontario, I don't see evidence that there is such a thing as a progressive Canadian government. What is needed is more people to understand that this is a myth, and to put pressure on domestic governments to put pressure on the Canadian government at the international level.
