Do you agree with Manny’s point? He’s basically calling out himself and Jeter in a sense where he and Jeter wouldn’t be as successful as they were with the big names that they have without Boston and New York.

In terms of Manny's perspective, I think he is definitely right about players getting more media recognition and pressure in larger markets. If Harper somehow slipped to number 2 or 3 in the 2010 Draft and went to Pittsburgh or Baltimore, he still would have gotten a lot of attention (like Manny Machado did in Baltimore), but maybe not as much as he got in Washington.
Now some players shudder under the spotlight, and some thrive. Sonny Gray dominated with Oakland, but suffered some regression after he was traded to the Yankees. Max Muncy never did well with Oakland, but broke out after he was traded to the Dodgers. It really depends on the player and the market for success to be determined, but players in bigger markets get more media attention than players in smaller markets. If Muncy broke out in Oakland, fewer people would know who he is, as opposed to now when he is on Los Angeles. I think Manny's comments have validity to them, which makes it exciting whenever I see small market teams succeed in October.

All those range analytics judge based on the spectacular play, not the common one, and if he really was such a liability on defense then how does he have the greatest winning percentage as a starting shortstop of all time, in teams usually with mediocore ground- ball pitchers?

If he’d played most of his career during the 1970s, when the Pirates were one of MLB’s best teams, playing in Pittsburgh certainly wouldn’t have hurt-if anything, it seems to me that he likely would have become a household name much more quickly.

What made Jeter stand out was he was all about winning. He was huge part in creating winning culture for Yankees. Once you have established that culture players that get signed must buy in or not play.
Most players in professional sports would take money over winning in heartbeat . They just want numbers because that's where $ are. It's simply not worth it to sacrifice numbers for winning.
Jeter definitely benefited from being on team that spent money but I think he would be winner wherever he was.

The issue with the defense thing is that analytics will have you thinking Jeter was a drunken idiot on the field dropping balls and throwing balls away all the time, but in reality the reason his DRS is so low is because of his range, but even then it didn’t matter cause Jeter was both a clutch hitter AND clutch defender. I’m not a Yankees fan. I will say this, It’s extremely difficult to take at face value anything that comes out of Manny. A former player that tested I believe 3 times for performance enhancing drugs. 🤔 Here’s an idea, maybe he should come up with an analysis on how different his stats would’ve been had he not ever used steroids.

As a lifetime Yankees fan, I never looked at Derek Jeter as overrated. Was he a great player? I say sure he was when you add up his career numbers. But I'm also a realist. Personally, I felt that Derek Jeter wasn't better than Boston's Nomar Garciaparra from the time both players were on their respective teams up until Nomar got traded to the Chicago Cubs late in the 2004 season. I'll be honest, I was nervous whenever Nomar went up to bat against Yankees pitchers because during his best days, Nomar was considered one of the toughest outs in baseball whenever games were on the line. I respect what Manny Ramirez said. But overall as a Yankees fan, I felt DJ was one of the best leaders in the game. And that's what makes Jeter a special player against a Garciaparra or similar player.
And going further back about if Derek played for the KC Royals, he would be another guy. Playing for a team like the Royals and getting recognized for greatness on that type of team gives one all-time great status if successful. That's why as a lifetime Yankees fan, I will always have a special place in my heart for George Brett. One of the greatest players ever I had the honor of watching. That guy used to make me extremely nervous whenever he was at the plate. I enjoyed everything about him during the Yankees vs Royals rivalries back in the day. The dust ups and he controversial moments combined. I was ecstatic for him when the Royals finally won the World Series back in 1985. He deserved that. A similar player to George Brett I would say although in a larger market would be Mike Schmidt. That man was great too playing for only one team throughout his illustrious career.

As a Yankees fan, I agree with Manny Ramirez. That's why although I don't begrudge the decision that Robinson Cano made signing with Seattle, his legacy could've been a WHOLE lot different if he would've remained in The Bronx. And yeah, I know he eventually came back with The Mets, but by that time it was too late. And no disrespect to that team in Queens, but it's just a night and day difference between the Yankees and Mets. Just my opinion, of course.

Theres other factors here nobody is paying attention to. Im a lifelong yankee fan. Jeter was more than just a great hitter. Better than his skill at hitting and baseball in general is his character. That 90s yankee team was carefully constructed kinda similar to the way herb brooks built the 1980 usa olympic team. Im pretty sure the true architect of the core of that yankee dynasty was gene Michaels, who apparently was a intuitive baseball genius. Buck showalter said gene Michaels saw things with his heart, mind, intuition most people couldn’t see. Jeter was picked because of his character. What people don’t factor in was his incredible ability to live on central park west and date probably the 10 hottest women in existence and still keep up that level of play. Keep that passion for the game. And trust me I’m a New Yorker, if he had been on any other team he would have been concentrating on baseball a lot more. His stats would have been significantly better. I could even see with my naked eye he was constantly distracted. What nobody seems to pay attention to is character of players which is so important. Most of the players on that yankee team had a certain character they were as good people as they were players and in the biggest moments they find a way to beat you cause passion is most important. They weren’t the most skilled players but the right players. The flip play in 2001 against Oakland defines Jeter, that clutch player, who rises above in the biggest moments finds a way to beat you. I watched so many of his games i don’t see how his defense statistically was that bad. He always made the play, i think maybe his range of motion wasn’t that great, maybe thats what thats referring too. Skilled players are a dime a dozen, but truly great winners are legendary. Jeters numbers alone lacking great power are very impressive. Very impressive.

Of course it's true and Manny is (shockingly) 100% right on this issue. Think about all the great players who have played on small market teams and spent their best years there never winning, it's a cruel joke. Some of them then get a big free agency deal late in their career and fade away lamenting all the "what if" moments. That is a very VERY long list. Jeter was great because he was a) a fantastic player but b) was on the Yankees and c) surrounded by other great players who got them WS titles. Sure, he thrived in a high pressure environment but let us not forget Jeter didn't do it alone. He never carried the NYY alone - hardly. Big markets add pressure sure but they also afford you the luxury of being surrounded by others to share in the pressure.
