    I think some of these companies “accidentally” leak their data on purpose. It’s easier to ask for forgiveness, then ask for permission.

    I totally agree Shannon. I knew that doing those tests were definitely not privacy friendly but I didn’t realize it was this bad. Especially about how the data sharing is governed only by the ToS agreement, since they can just change it whenever they need to. I guess I just assumed there was some kind of overarching framework in place to prevent that. We need some kind of basic privacy protection in the US on a national level, with teeth.

    I did IT for a genetic testing company (which is now out of business, jumped ship before that) and I can say that security was the last thing on anyones' mind at the company. I would give in depth reasons why we needed to tighten up security on X, Y, and Z but no one ever cared. most time was geared toward break/fix and ignore problems unless they get in the way of tests running. The only qualm I have with your video is that if you take insurance payment for a genetic test or work through a hospital (my company did) then you are subject to HIPAA

    • @ShannonMorse
      @ShannonMorse  4 роки тому +1

      Right, hospitals are regulated with HIPAA. But if you buy one of these from Target, there's no law regulating it.

      @@ShannonMorse when I was working I was under the direct impression that if you took in a sample or blood/saliva/other (at least in Massachusetts) that you fell under the HIPAA umbrella. May not seem like much, but it could affect your insurance premiums if DNA data was bought by a third party and you have markers for potential health risks through inheritance. Most of these firms aren't HIPPA compliant or have any policies for CCPA which goes into effect next year.

  • @john_gyver
    @john_gyver 4 роки тому +1

    Shannon, I agree with everything you said. Additionally those companies make some dubious claims that based on your DNA they're able to say something like "You are 70% American, 20% German, 10% French". But in order to determine that, they'd have to know what a 100% American, German etc DNA looks like - for a reference. But how would they do it when pretty much all of us are more or less some kind of international combination of genes. So this entire process is flawed.
    The best example was when some identical twins (youtubers) submitted they DNA to one of those companies and they got completely different results. They made a video about it (if I find it I'll put a link here).

    • @dffgffffffdddddddddd
      @dffgffffffdddddddddd 3 роки тому

      They get DNA from all over the world and then they compare it to your DNA to get the percentages and the breakdown. So, if you ever see something like, "This person is 100% German", it doesn't literally mean 100 percent, the websites just create a limit for it, it means that your DNA just has very little variation, or the percent is so little they just don't include it at all. It doesn't mean they have a person who is literally 100% German that they found.
      How would you divide up the data? Humans came up with this stuff in the first place, so they make the rules, we decided what counts as "German" DNA based on gathering DNA samples from that region, which is literally just a bordering other countries, we just made it up. Using your logic, why does race even exist if we all have those combinations of genes, it's for labeling purposes, not because it's an actual universal rule or whatever.

    A year ago I purchased a kit for my partner. Thank you for putting the info about asking to have the data removed via phone number. With the scary stuff being put on the side for a moment. He was able to find out information about his father's side of the family. His father was adopted, and he was able to find his father's siblings/half-siblings. Really interesting stuff. It was a closed adoption, and his lost aunt had tried to find him a couple of times but it just wasn't possible. I am fully aware that asking for them to remove your information doesn't mean squat once they've already used it for other purposes. I just hope we can get to the point where we can have better policies about the handling of this material. Especially since the fascination with this subject matter will never go away.

    My issue on these DNA tests, once out there, ALWAYS OUT THERE! Gov't will somehow, someway have access to it. Also, I was looking into it (years ago), and found information on how they can take parent DNA, some sibling DNA and they can come up with your DNA or a very close replicant of it. Also, if they do have your DNA info on file, they can replicate a synthetic DNA sample. Not good enough for cloning, but good enough for genetics testing. If it is good enough for genetics testing, then it can be used in other ways. I have (for fun and curiosity) made duplicate finger prints. (Was also covered in a Myth Busters episode. That's where I got the idea from). So since I could do that, I could use it for illegal activities. Same for the synthetic DNA. Way too much trouble and expensive. At least it is ... today!
    So bottom line....DO NOT DO IT, DISCOURAGE OTHERS! Our privacy and rights are already infringed upon.

    Chances are a close family member will have already tested. Nobody can extrapolate exactly what your genes will be, unless your parents have four identical alleles. A more immediate result is that if you have a kid out there and somebody close to you have tested, chances are excellent that the kid will find you. Now, that might be the best thing that could ever happen to the both of you, unless you lose other family because of evidence of infidelity. The cat is by now probably in the bag, though, waiting to be opened.

    Until the day they can replicate physical DNA we can consider our virtual profile safe as encrypted. And as stated in the disclaimer from 23andMe and the pharmaceutical company all these DNA profiling are mainly for medical purpose for developing more genetic targeted treatments. The worst case scenario would be if for some reason your own DNA change and don't match anymore with the former in the virtual archive which could serve as the only form of authentication and you lost your identity.
