I think this song was written as a conversation between 2 people, whether it be lovers, a parent and a child, 2 friends etc.
It's telling the story of keeping that second person with them the way they are in that moment.
I've interpreted it a little differently, I've had a conversation my older self asking my younger self to make the most of every memory I create!
