It takes a lot to beat their first 3 albums! The Crossing Steeltown The Sear Take your pick from any of them but I'd recommend 'Chance' 'Lost Patrol' 'The Storm' 'Porrohman' 'Flame of the West' 'East of Eden' 'Where the Rose is Sown' 'Just a Shadow' 'Look Away' Eiledon' 'Remembrance Day' Cheers
Love Big Country, so happy to see someone finely react to something other than "In a Big Country"! Not that it is a bad song, they just have so many others too! My favorites are "The Crossing", "One Great Thing" and "Thousand Yard Stare". Thank you for reacting!
One of the best bands from the 80s,without a doubt, with those distinctive guitars, rollicking bass lines, and killer drums, and of course those vocals. Seen them twice here in New Zealand in the past 5 years doing their "Crossing" and "Steeltown" tours, hopefully they'll do one for "The Seer",I asked vocalist Simon Hough what the chances are,and it's on the cards, but aunty Rona has stopped many tours everywhere, still there's hope. Oh,the other Scottish band you were talking about was Wet,Wet,Wet - an apt name for them.
Bc were massive in the UK in the 80's they were also the first UK band to play in Russia to a standing audience with a gig that wasn't organised by the Russian government. They had over 20 songs in the top 40 and their first 5 albums all in the top 5 . Sadly their singer (Stuart Adamson ) commited suicide in 2001 but they continue with a new singer. The last album they released was called the journey and had Mike peters (the alarm) doing the vocals. The edge (U2) quotes Stuart as being an influence on his guitar playing on early U2 songs. U2 also released the saints are coming which Stuart wrote for his first band the skids
Also, while many people justifiably rave about the twin guitars, and the huge range of sounds they achieved (so much more than the ridiculously limited "bagpipe guitar" sound that the press kept attributing to them)...the casual listener could be forgiven for missing how incredible Tony Butler's bass work is. This is a link to a play-through of Red Fox by Big Country's current bass player, Scott Whitley. It shows how complex and interweaving the bass line is on this number. ua-cam.com/video/iG99QJDtib4/v-deo.html
I'm a fellow Aussie, and I've been a fan of Big Country since the first moment I heard them. Their big hit, In A Big Country was actually their third single, but I first heard of them via Simon Townsend's Wonder World, which played the video for their second single (Fields of Fire). Have loved them ever since. Their first album, The Crossing, is my perma-fave. There will never be another album that surpasses it for me...except maybe their second album, Steeltown. The Seer was their third album, and that's the one this song came from. Also a great album, but for me, I don't love at quite the same level as the first two. The first album has historic elements, and folklore, and boys-own-adventure kinda stuff. If you liked this song, you'd probably like The Storm, and they have a song called The Crossing (which didn't actually appear on the album of the same name) which I suspect is actually about Bonnie Prince Charlie and his journey to try and seize the throne. I haven't ever researched it, but that's just my feeling. ua-cam.com/video/D_ZMQAw8QZk/v-deo.html
Very interesting!! I had not heard about any of that. I love hearing about the history and back stories! Thanks for introducing us to different music and to the world outside of our own!💜
That’s interesting to learn about the Red Tartan, my Family’s Tartan is Red… the original spelling of our name is Dalziel, but now is Dalzell Thanks for the lesson @Pat 🤘🏼🤠🤘🏼🤠

I remember this band. I blasted their hit, "In a Big Country " in the 80's.

The storm

Cannot understand the lyrics Pat. I previewed their web. See if you can get lyrics for us while it's playing.
Found the lyrics
The Red Fox
Big Country
Coming out into the day and all that I can see
Is the red and white of the King's army
I'll meet with them among the pine
I'll meet with them by noon
The dirge will sound on the morrow's noon
I was not born into this time
To cleave the soil or work the mine
I came to claim my enemy
And be the fox's destiny
I follow on in silence with a quiet heart in fear
I will be done before the dawn if I'm found here
I stand up as he passes and the time has come at last
The prey goes down at the metals crash
I was not born into this time
To cleave the soil or work the mine
I came to claim my enemy
And be the fox's destiny
Kidnapped in the dead of night
I did no wrong, I will not fight
It was not me, I will not run
But I believe in what was done
John, John, there's something wrong
The guns are found and the fox is gone
John, John, before too long
It will be me they hang it on
So send me off to the colony shore
Or send me where I'll laugh no more
I will tell none of what I know
Let the hunter walk where need must go
John, John, there's something wrong
The guns are found and the fox is gone
John, John, before too long
It will be me they hang it on
I will tell none of what I know
Let the hunter walk where need must go
John, John, before too long
It will be me they hang this on
