@gbangerau "There is obviously a need for higher grade pontoons" - mate the reason all of the pontoons are floating away has nothing to do with their "grade". The problem is that when the pontoon companies install them they are given "Q100 Flood Levels" that the piles (posts that hold the pontoon in place) need to be installed to (height). Those calculations were done by the council thinking that Wivehoe dam would stop a flood like this - well, it didn't, so the pontoons are floating away!
please tell this american what a pontoon is? I hope those doing these films are on high enough ground. The world is watching and I am sure you will have all our help and prayers in the coming days
Charlotte Dickson pontoon is a jetty. Basically a floating platform usually anchored by poles that are usually taller than the water level. The floating platform will rise and fall with the waterlevel sliding up and down on the poles. From memory these either broke their poles, the anchor to the poles broke or the flood went above the height of the poles - whichever the case these buggers escaped their moarings and threatened the bridges etc of the area. You can see another pontoon/jetty in the video with a roof on it - notice how high it is in the water? See how the ramp slopes upward? That ramp would normally slope downward.
Last night at West End I saw two pontoons with boats still on them floating past, it was eerie..
I wonder if there's any chance of rescuing them, once they reach the sea -- or is it a one-way pilgrimage?
Good video.
@shanushole it was filmed just up river from the "regatta hotel brisbane" - put that into google maps to get the spot.
So many pontoons went downstream - a minor flotilla.
