  • Vinnk sent Sean a Famicom modded with AV outputs, but did Sean get exactly what he thought he was getting? We compare the video output of different Famicom systems using our trust Mother cartridge (or Earthbound Beginnings, as it's now known on Wii U Virtual Console).
    There were some other cool things in the box, but you'll just have to watch to find out what they are!

    The AV mod has been done incorrectly, taking the video signal directly from the ppu pin 21 and using the proper amplifier gives us a really clean image, just like the Twin Famicom or the NES

    Suddenly, the lyrics to "Starman" (which incidentally, inspired the Starmen from "Mother") make a lot more sense...
    "Turn on on your TV, you may pick him up on Channel 2"... I always though it was weird that the alien was broadcasting on the radio, but somebody thought that one might be able to receive the transmission on a television. Now I know why. I wouldn't have known from first-hand experience, the channels that analog TVs can pick up have started at Channel 3 as far back as I can remember.

    Sean, all you have to do is cut 1 pin and the jail bars should disappear. If you want to preserve the RF, you have to cut a trace and solder a simple jumper wire.

    I got that power supply when I ordered my Super Famicom, and I thought I was going to have to use my regular Famciom power supply since it has the same specs as a Super Famicom plug would.

  • @iyatemu
    @iyatemu 9 років тому +4

    My method for AV modding a Famicom does involve drilling holes in the case, however since the RF is no longer used (I can keep it intact, I just have to be really careful cutting the shield), I just pull the RF shield off and place the phono jacks on the back (as would have likely been standard). The console remains cosmetically intact and looks just like a normal Famicom from every angle except the back, and you don't have to worry about wrapping another cord up with the console.
    The only issue with this is I haven't had to deal with modding a GPM-series Famicom (like the one you got in the mail), but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
    The reason the AV modded Famicom has those "jailbars" as they're known to modders is interference from a CPU address line running right next to the PPU Pin 21 video signal. The way to fix it is to carefully remove pin 21 from the board and take the video signal from it directly unlike what this modder has done, taking it from the RF box after it's passed through amplification and correction and signal "cleanup". If it's done correctly, jailbars are greatly reduced or nonexistent. Vinnk should get his money back for this mod.

    • @SeanOrange
      @SeanOrange 9 років тому

      Ooh! What is the GPM series, and what gives this one away as one of them?

    • @iyatemu
      @iyatemu 9 років тому +1

      The ([VCI]) sticker on the bottom does. when you opened it up, the one-piece construction did as well. If you were to open it up fully and look at the board revision, it'd probably be an HVC-CPU-GPM-02 board.

    The av modded famicom I bought on eBay wasn't letting expansion audio go through, so games like the Famicom version of Castlevania 3 were missing parts of the music. I brought it to my brother yesterday and he helped fix it. It turns out in trying to make a pseudo stereo mod, the seller didn't account for the extra sound channels that certain game utilize, so what my brother did was he cut the wire that was connected to pin 45 for the mod and soldered it to pin 46. He then cut the trace to pin 45. That allowed the standard audio channels and expansion audio channels to go through. You should probably check some fds games and game with extra sound chips to make sure they sound right on your av mod.

  • @RiveTheRat
    @RiveTheRat 9 років тому +3

    Can it be that the soldering is bad ? Maybe you should look it up and see whether a proper mod can output better image than the Twin and possibly take to a electronics repair shop so they clean the mod up for you?

    Famicom Dojo
    So in modding the famicom for av you get the video signal from the PPU's 21st pin, 5v volts of power would usually be taken directly from the power regulator of the famicom, audio is taken from the cartridge connecter's 46th pin which would be the famicom's audio out (grounded to the 1st pin on the cartridge connector usually) . the video, audio, and the power have their respective grounds to close the circuits without short-circuiting anything.
    That "black box thing" you described is a capacitor ( a polorizied one, mind you and depending on the modder and their methods can be of varying microfarad μF values, I myself have used 220μF in the past)
    From there the methods can become more stylistic so to speak (In the sense that the ends are the same but the means vary from modder to modder), my friend ***** and I have modded a few famicoms.
    If anyone has questions or would like to have their famicoms modded, hit us up.

    A while back I decided to get my Famicom modded. The mod that I got physically removed the RF box and put an av plug into that same RF plug plus it removed the video bars on it so I have it plugged into my HD TV. Plus, I found a Famicom to NES controller adapter (plugs right into the controller port on the Famicom) so I've been playing so many games on it since I can use my NES controllers on it.

    I went with an AV Famicom because I figured I probably wouldn't be playing any microphone games anyway.
    That said, if I want to get some later... is it possible to rewire a microphone controller to work with an NES plug? If not, are there any microphones that plug into the accessory port?

    • @FamicomDojo
      @FamicomDojo  9 років тому

      TBustah That all depends on whether or not the pins on the NES-style port on the AV Famicom connect to the main board in the same way, AND of that hardware even exists o the AV Famicom main board. Even if you could, it sounds like more trouble than it's worth -- although I'm general I would LOVE to have a Famicom controller that I could plug into any NES-style port.

    Get that RGB mod and all will be good in the world.
    Or if you don't want to go the expensive XRGB route, then there is always the HI-DEF NES route that can be installed into a AV Famicom.
    Trust me, it makes a huge difference. If you have a Sony PVM to hook up the RGB modded NES/Famicom to, then all is really good in the world.

    • @SeanOrange
      @SeanOrange 8 років тому +1

      And then have to hunt down a TV to play it...? Enh...

    • @SageOwl
      @SageOwl 8 років тому

      Not necessarily; a PVM is just the best screen for 240p/480i sources in my opinion.
      There are RGB to HDMI upscalers that work for HDTVs, but I would only recommend one: the XRGB Framemeister. It comes at a cost of $300, but what you get with it is simply amazing, especially if you have never seen a console output true RGB before. There are cheaper alternatives available on Amazon, but their process of converting the analogue signal involves multiple steps of post processing, which of course just oversaturates/sharpens the picture and introduces more input lag to your HDTV that will already have it.
      There is also the Hi-Def NES modkit I mentioned in my OP which installs a HDMI FPGA board into the console to internally encode the analogue signal to digital and output directly through HDMI to your HDTV without any scaler. This also introduces zero input lag and looks great with proper adjustment of the scaling options. It's also relatively cheaper than the XRGB depending on what an installer will charge.
      I'd recommend My Life In Gaming or Phonedork on here (youtube) for more detailed information if you're in any way curious. Obviously I think it's worth the money if you're a big enough retro gaming fan that doesn't want to bother with emulation.

    I just think the mod on your Famicom was done poorly/, which might be causing the interference. I would look into the RGB mod some people have already mentioned, or just have the composite mod redone by someone who knows what they are doing. Also I don't think i can ever go back to using RF for anything beyond local HDTV, my Atari 2600JR, and Intelevision consoles I want too leave pure as they came from the factory.

    I prefer to be as original as possible with retro gaming but if finances are a problem (rare games) or its near impossible for it to work the original way (RF Famicoms), then I think modding is OK.
    I don't personally mod Famicoms but I know some people who do pretty good mods (I live in Japan and collect & sell retro games) so if anyone's looking for an AV mod Famicom and can't find one anywhere else I may be able to help (personally I think they're overvalued most of the time but it's probably a good deal if it's your only way to play retro games the way you want to).

      +kamiotokonoko You got 2 grand to spare for a Famicom Titler.
      That is how much they are going for on eBay right now.

      +kamiotokonoko In case you're wondering, the Famicom Titler has easily the best video output. It has an entirely new PPU and support s-video output.The only way to get better than that on real hardware is to RGB mod a Famicom/NES.

      The titler is also the easiest to mod for RGB support, it's PPU actually outputs RGB and it uses a converter to change to S-video.
      So if you find the RGB signal points you can port those signals to the outside of the case, you can tap into ether composite video or S-video's Luma for sync

    Having a famicom modded,for composite out is better then rf but it's not perfect.Though,now there is a RBG mod that can be used on a nes&famicom.

    The famicom and the cartridges give me an impression of like cheap plastic, i like how all NES cartridges have an uniform design and look, and the cosole itself looks very modern. I'm excluding the disk system which looks amazing.

      That difference in perception by Western consumers is precisely the reason the NES and SNES got redesigns in this hemisphere.

      Well, I'm from europe, I like how the super famicom and PAL SNES look, i think that it's better than the american one, but i do prefer the western NES design more than famicom for the previous reasons, the famicom looks cool too tho.
