  • A problem is currently threatening to force several airlines across the globe to ground a huge chunk of their fleet.
Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower geared turbofan engines, especially of the PW1100G variant, were revealed last year to have used a contaminated powdered metal during manufacture between 2015 and 2021.
The impact of this has had far-reaching consequences for airlines, aircraft manufacturers and Pratt & Whitney themselves.
So what exactly is happening with Pratt & Whitney engines?

Pratt & Whitney has a proud tradition of engine defects going back 50 years. Early release 747 engines had a combustion instability that knocked blades off their rear turbines.

These modern engines are increasingly reaching the physical limits of their components.
I think it's good that the problems are being worked on before the pilots have to send Sqawak 7700.

When the CEO earns tens of millions a year and is promised huge payouts if the stock market booms, the long-term operation of the company will fail.
This happened to Enron, to Boeing, to ...

All technology, new or old or vintage, has their teething issues.
Mature technology has been aged to be more reliable and has plenty of 3rd party support, but it lacks any cutting edge technology features.
As for cutting edge technology, you get the latest and greatest but you’re vulnerable to any bugs, glitches, flaws, defects that come with technology that has not aged long enough to be mature and reliable.
Pratt and Whitney engines and any other turbofan engine companies have to deal with these teething issues.

Wow, Airbus planes are grounded because of the Pratt&Whitney engines which have serious issues. Beside Boeing Airbus too has big problems with their aircraft being grounded due to the issues with the American engines. It was a good decision for China to build its own engines such as the Yangtze River engines that will be used for China’s civil aircraft.
