- Dr. Gordon Hazard is known as the guru of grass. He lives in West Point, Miss., and has owned and run steers on grass since 1937, making a profit each and every year. His operation now consists of 3,000 acres of grass and 1,800 steers that he and one part-time herdsman manage in only 3.5 hours daily. He has spoken at hundreds of meetings throughout the United States and Canada and still draws a crowd because new, as well as veteran, ranchers love to gather to hear "Doc's" practical, down to earth experiences that are guaranteed to get everyone excited and thinking.
We lost a smart, and sweet, down to earth man.
Rest in peace Mr. Hazard. This guy was pretty dang smart.. I don't run my operation exactly like he did, but we had some similarities..
Great work someone decided to record Gordon giving a discussion, m in Australia and follow his teachings closely. Keep up the good work.
On shade - pastured dotted with trees will produce more forage than pasture with no trees. If there are enough trees to provide 25% - 50% shade over the pasture at all times, the cattle will not bunch up under one tree. Also, the pasture will do better in hot, dry weather. And it will start growing earlier in the spring, and longer into the fall than it will grow in a pasture with the exact same conditions that have no trees.
Definitely in a shaded part of my country I took some quadrates and without any fertiliser or input the grass had a growth rate in partial shade of 70kgDM/HA/Day.

Sadly, Allan Nation has passed away, but 'The Stockman GrassFarmer' is still going strong, now with Joel Salatin as editor. Anyone watching this will enjoy and benefit from reading TSGF.

Good info! Clarification: Good soil high in carbon will be the color of chocolate cake, or a dark chocolate bar - very dark brown but not really black. This soil smells great. This is what Hazard is referring to. (Truly BLACK soil is anaerobic and toxic to plant roots. This stuff smells bad, too.) Plant roots and the beneficial microbes and other soil life need oxygen. Search 'Soil Food Web' for more info. Several talks by Dr. Elaine Ingham on this topic are on UA-cam.

Anybody know what kind of fencing he used for his daily grazing divisions? My gut says he had it all laid out in barb wire, but I don't know.
