How did I just come across this now?? I grew up watching the V8s as a 90s boy in NZ. Excellent racing! Our family didn't take a side, but I was a Holden boy at the time. And the rivalry even existed between us primary school kids back in NZ. It's not quite the same anymore, and admittedly I fell in love with the Japanese imports through my teens. But man, what an era to look back on. This movie looks really good!
I grew up in a Holden family. I can remember as though it was yesterday the HQ absolutely polarising everybody when it was released. Only the Valiant Charger managed to take some of the attention away from it. I got a license around then and started driving, things became a bit clearer then. I quickly learned that the 202 was useless and you had to have at least a 253 to move your HQ, HJ, HX or HZ Kingswood around. I started driving cabs a bit later on as a second job which exposed me to the "enemy", the dreaded Falcon. I quickly gained respect for the infidel with it's reliability, smooth six cylinder engine and good handling. It was nowhere near as good as the Holden as far as finish went, and the XC's dashboard looked prehistoric compared to the HX to WB Holden's though. I drove a VK Valiant with a 265 six cylinder engine around then as well. I was blown away, so much power from a six. The Falcon suddenly seemed slow and a 202 Kingswood made the Torana 1900 look like a performance car. Sadly now they are all gone, in Australia these days we don't even seem to be able to manufacture a fart after a feed of curry. V8 Superclones? Phhtttt, I would rather watch The Block Finds a Farmer Wife instead. I have the Motherload of DVD's about our tin top racing in Oz. Falcon's, Mazda's, Torana's, Pacer's, Datsun's, Charger's Escort's and many more doing battle in their respective classes and mixing it up together at the same time on the SAME track. That is racing. Ford versus Holden? That's easy. Chrysler Valiant first because of it's towering performance, roomy interior and huge boot. Torana/Sunbird as long as you were shorter than 6' an easy second. Holden versus Falcon? By the time it got to the HZ and XC you would have to say the HZ Holden. Everything before that I think you would have to say the Falcon.
When the Valiant first launched in Oz, the base spec single barrel carb version, had a 1/3 more power then the Ford, and TWICE the power of Holden's top engine. The VC V8 was the only non-Mini in the top ten at Bathurst one year, with drum brakes all round, and drivers pulling the A904 Auto back down through the gears to stop at the bottom of Conrod after about 4 or 5 laps. The base Slant, then the 2bbl, then the Pacer, the 273, 318, 340, 360 and the three Hemi Six's, year for year, out powered the GM and Fords, and usually massed lower thanks to the torsion bars, but were always biased towards ride compliance and comfort. Change the alignment, and the Val's ran rings around the GM and Ford. Sure Ford and GM had louder advertising depts, but they were always trying to catch the MoPar out on the open road.

Mind you, it was never just Holden versus Ford. I was at Symmons Plains back when Mark and Jim had the Skylines and Colin Bond was driving a Corolla. The legend of the two locals was built when they competed against multiple makes and models in the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. When touring car racing in Australia was reduced to a two-make charity benefit so Holden or Ford found it impossible to lose, it just made them look weak.
the most disappointing part of that ordeal is that ford already had a potential competitor to the GT-R, in the XF SVO prototype. Holden likely also could have leveraged the engineering work put into Vauxhall's Lotus Cortina, but instead we were stuck with the old american recipe of "shove 1.5x too much engine in and call it a day"
@captainzoll3303 at the beginning of Group A, 1985 abd 1986, V8 Commodores were competitive with the Euro cars and stayed the Japanese cars. But as manufacturers threw big dollars at Group A, we saw Sierra RS500 and Skyline GTR. At that time, Holden was broke and couldn't really be more adventurous than the existing V8 engine. I do wonder how VL might have gone, had they developed the RB30 for racing. Imagine Holden Engine Co making a batch of special RB30DET in Walkinshaws, to compete with Nissan and their RB20DET and later RB26DETT... Nissan Japan would have freaked out! 😂
fords had the best motor ever made - the australian designed and built mighty barra i dont like v8 supercars or bathurst as much anymore, they havnt been based on any real car for a long time - only a few body panels are from a real car the chassis is custom built and nothing like a real car
😂😂 the Barra never achieved anything in racing as for the 351 it regularly threw rods out the block and was an unreliable pile of shit at Bathurst l. Ask moffat and Johnson who spent a fools ransom trying to get more power and make them reliable. The results speak for themselves the 308 was by FAR the more reliable and has more wins especially with Larry Perkins magic wand waving over them. Don’t remember when a Barra won Bathurst against a V8.
@GarySellars-mh1qt Absolutely stupid logic. It doesn’t need to have won races or Bathurst to be a good engine. Everyone knows that when they released and it came down to Xr8 vs SS vs Xr6T. The Turbo was by far the better pick. Fords 5.4L boss motors were completely outshined by their turbo 6 counterpart. And even the LS Powered SS commodores were well and truly being given a run for their money. And the fact that for the longest time it was fairly cheap and easy to get solid and reliable power out of them. And even the NA 6’s we’re still great and were stupidly reliable. They were also never gonna run a turbo 6 in the supercar series at the time. It was already hard to justify picking The 5.4 boss xr8 over the xr6t, if the turbo was successfully running around in the supercar series that’d just make the boss look worse. Especially since I’m fairly sure the ba/bf Supercars didn’t even run the 5.4l boss motor they still used a 5.0 Windsor for racing. They might not have the racing pedigree but using that as an excuse to not call them at the least Australia’s best motor is just silly.
Yeah no....are they capable? Yeah sure...but so is anything once you modify it lol. If you wqnt reliability and thats what you're judging best off of, then the holden 6 cyls where definitely the most bullet proof. If we're talking power handling then I'm sorry but the American made LS's have them beat. 750hp from a stock block is easily achievable. But if you mean decent reliability and okay power then yeah the ford 4.0 is the winner.
@@timothyiorlano1996 “Then the Holden 6cyls were definitely the most bulletproof” Highly debatable, ford’s straight 6 motors have been excellent for the longest time. Their straight 6’s have probably been their staple that’s always been great and generally have a way better rep than their V8’s. Ford 6’s have almost always been great. And that doesn’t change for their Aussie cars. The old 250 cross flow would go for ever. And the 4.0L from the E series and Au’s were again incredibly reliable and could also make decent power with some work. And then you get to the Barra which is by far better than any V6 Holden put out. Ford have always been the better of the two when it came to 6 cylinder motors. And Holden/GM have always been King when it came to V8’s. I’m not knocking their V6’s because they’ve been fairly solid too. But to say their V6’s are better than Ford’s inline 6’s is again highly debatable.
All hail the mighty skyline for absolutely slapping both Ford and Holden for years in a row until they had to make their own league to compete. God Bless

The Jags got away with it because they only turned up for Bathurst once, and didn't dominate the ATCC along the way, plus they were a 5.3 litre V12, Aussie fans have always respected cubic inches and big torque, and the XJS was available in Australia. The Sierras did recieve a lot of negativity when they first appeared on the scene as you couldn't buy a production model here and most people were still very much in the V8 mindset, not really taking to a 4 cylinder turbo car. Nissan did Ford a favour by becoming the new villain.
Its over. The Australian government didn't think it was worth preserving the half a million jobs plus to maintain our car industry. Lets celebrate a dead part of our culture that was left behind. Ford vs Holden,..... or as people who drove almost anything else said, Slow vs Slower. If you wanted to go fast in the late 50's, 60's and early 70's, you bought European for the corners, or Chrysler for the open roads. After that you bought Nissan.
Most of the people sooking about Holden and Ford shutting up shop didn't own one. How can you expect either brand to survive if you didn't shop with them? But in the end, they were manufacturing overpriced rubbish. Foreign manufacturers figured out what we actually wanted to drive, then went for it and filled the void.
Lol still no one will tell the story of the 1992 "win". Still dno how a car that had to be towed off conrod with the right front wheel detatched could win the race 🤣 the crowd was mad because there was a clear winner and yet beaurocracy caused officials to count back and hand the win to a car that was totaled.
I have been a design engineer for both Ford and Holden. I have owned Toyotas, Nissans, Porsches, Honda, Mercedes, BMW, VW even a Maserati. I've never owned a Ford or a Holden and I never will.
One of the several reasons for the collapse of the Australian car industry is perfectly highlighted here. From the sixties and seventies when everyone was proud to be driving an Australian car, be it Falcon, Kingswood, Fairlane, Statesman etc through to the nineties when Touring Car racing became the inward-looking V8 only boganistic model it is today. Of COURSE a Holden or Ford will win if it's that's all that's allowed to race! One reason punters started to turn away from homegrown products was because of the bogan association. Look at the ones still on the road......... I really like my Fords (I have one), I used to work at Ford but I am by no means one-eyed. It's a shame that's how it was forced to end up.

Too little too late. V8 Supercars is garbage now. Who wants to tune in to see anton Vs Andre. Once a few old hard heads W Davidson M Winterbottom D Reynolds S Van Giz J Courtney leavea big chunk of the fan bbase will drop away. This years Bathurst was boring the new gen cars are boring. Now the camaro is off. Its not looking good for the category. Im sorry to say....
@@cameronm5248 The government wastes alot of money on other crap. The car manufacturering industry employed a hell of alot of people. The German government props up all their car manufacturers. I think it was a huge blunder on behalf of the Australian government.
@@cameronm5248 The main issue was both Holden and Ford were never truly Australian they were headquartered in the US and when hardtimes came along the Americans were always going to look after there own workers. Why make cars in Australia when they can make them in the US or elsewhere and export them into Australia!
I had a holden 1976 Hx first, then I bought a ford xd, then I had a ford eb series 2. but Im more a ford fantaic.
Can’t I like both ?
Holden won the battle of course 😉
The Nissans were great cars. Still are. Same goes for the chargers!
Hemi six. Strong
In Australia yeah sure it's ford or Holden but growing up I've been Mitsubishi magna
Are you saying your parents had a Bitsashity Magna?
That's paramount to child abuse!
What a fall from grace for both companies.
Thanks very much USA
Was never much between them but we went to war anyway 😂
Is this a new movie???
Red all day. 😂
I had a Valliant. 😁😁
Bathurst isnt the same anymore 😔 supercars are not the same anymore. Numerous factors really besides the demise of the aussie manufacturers the drift scene moved in too.
holden on top, but RIP both holden and ford, mainly holden since they actually died, but ford got kicked from australia
Don’t show V8 Supercars videos with the real cars please!
The rivalry is destroyed miss the Ford vs Holden days Brock Johnson its stuffed not even competitive now Ford needs decent drivers the cars are not their problems
Will Davidson, Chaz Mostert, Cam Waters and David Reynolds no Good come on man.
But for the very last race they let em make changes and ford dominated lol
@@paulholmes8398 Davidson been around too long without wins when it matters
Ford vs Holden,..... or as people who drove almost anything else said, Slow vs Slower.
If you wanted to go fast in the late 50's, 60's and early 70's, you bought European for the corners, or Chrysler for the open roads. After that you bought Nissan.
I’m a Chevy guy!
On ya bike!
does it go faster with the plastic Chev badge
Thing is, though I'm on both sides.
Cause one has a Holden and one has a Ford.
Mopar or no car 🤙🤙🤙
Lol still no one will tell the story of the 1992 "win". Still dno how a car that had to be towed off conrod with the right front wheel detatched could win the race 🤣 the crowd was mad because there was a clear winner and yet beaurocracy caused officials to count back and hand the win to a car that was totaled.
Or the bathursts brocky won in court
Where are they now?
Oh yeh, Thanks to the unions..
My father had Fiats.
Chrysler and Ford are the best. No GM for me
Why ALL the " talking heads" ?
What else can they do if they want to try and milk it as a full length documentary?
I have been a design engineer for both Ford and Holden. I have owned Toyotas, Nissans, Porsches, Honda, Mercedes, BMW, VW even a Maserati. I've never owned a Ford or a Holden and I never will.
Shows how much confidence you had in your own work.
@@Internetbutthurt I also designed Toyotas for seven years and have owned six of them.
Holdens will always be better, you only see Fords catch fire when racing at bathurst
More like "The rivalry that killed off any interesting racing in Australia."
'you're a pack of bloody assholes'
I was a Ford man until they bought out the AU Falcon, I just couldn't forgive them for that ugly monstrosity!
Hilux and ranger are now the bogans choice. The bogans drive the wheels off them and wonder why they blow up or fall over!
Unfortunately our goverments dont think its important to make things in Australia anymore
You mean once the truckloads of taxpayer dollars stopped they vanished in .0000001 second lmao
@@frostedbutts4340 you mean when we eased legislation so that Australian businesses could move manufacturing offshore because of cheaper labour costs? Might want to look up the history of manufacturing in Australia mate 👍
Also while your at it, the history of how policy killed the trade union movement
@@tlow8745 Your right! Now look at all the junk we end up buying. Our once great manufacturers have ended up turning into importers of junk.
There's no point to this movie, Ford won the ultimate race against holden as Ford is still going and holden is a has been. Also Ford have created world wide iconic vehicles, set a few records and achieved distinction in vehicle manufacturing, all things which hold never achieved... ohh and holden has never beat a Ferrari 😉👍 🏆
yes, one of those distinctions in vehicle manufacturing was the ea foulcan, it was a true gem 😄
I guess you weren't around in the 60s , the repco brabham , oh we don't hear about it !
@@nickl2548 obviously not worth mentioning
Haha , funny !
@@nickl2548 Let's take a look at Ford's achievements, the F100 was once the most commonly owned vehicle world wide, the Mad Max Ford Falcon intercepter is an iconic vehicle known around the world, holden v8's got thrashed by a 4 cylinder Ford cosworth, Ford won against Ferrari, the Ford Falcon XY GTHO PHASE 3 was the fastest 4 door production sedan in the world at the time of production, the Ford mustang has made numerous appearances in numerous movies, Ford races in international competition both on track and in off road rallies, Ford introduced the moving assembly line to motor vehicle production.
Now let's take a look at Holden's list of accomplishments, they won a few bathhurst races 🤣👍
And in the end the winner was China
Ford and Holden did see the other cars coming, they just didn't give a fuck, and thought we would accept crappy brakes, handling, 3 on the tree etc, etc, whilst the quality of the others blew them away. They didn't hate the GTR, under group A. Every one were given the rules as to what you were allowed to build, and Nissan just pulled every one pants down with a perfect car. Don't watch bathurst/ supercars any more, to much American for my taste
Spoilers holden won lol
ford won
Prefer a Rotary tbh.
And the fans didn't hate the GTR, only the low IQ bogans.
Moffat's RX7 was sweet.
What a joke, how about vs Nissan??? Weak attitude, no wonder they did not survive...
Sorry but Mopar muscle is my flavour.
America has a lot to answer to for what they have done to our car industry
No Australian unions have a lot to answer for. Australian auto workers were the highest paid in the world even higher than America and Germany.
R.i.p. holden 😂😂😂
Long live ford
